Marry me?

So after a "marry me?" message I got to thinking of the TV programme married at first sight.

They analysised people and matched them based on a number of factors like science, morals, ambitions. On paper they were perfect matches. They didn't meet until their wedding day and had to agree to live together for at least 6 months.

So if youre single would you gibe it a go? Would you trust the experts to find your perfect match?

If you have a partner do you think the experts would have matched you and why?

No. I’d rather trust my own instincts than rely on ‘experts’. I know what I like

I'd definitely do this, it would be a great experiment. Hide my valuable teddy bears etc beforehand

Not a chance. Lust is difficult enough to pin down with an algorithm, love is impossible

Rubidoux, if this is your subtle way of asking, the answer is yes

Yup this. I'd love someone to scour the country looking for someone who matched my full list of wants and needs, but I wouldn't promise to even like them lol!

Every relationship I’ve had has been fucked up so if complete strangers want to give it a go finding me someone they are welcome to. They can’t make a worse job of it than I’ve already done!

Very interesting concept. I think of arranged marriages which must have a much less evidence based approach to matching and yet I think many of these marriages ultimately become fulfilling loving marriages.

However, many don't I guess.

Ultimately I think that the human psyche is so complicated and behaviour can be situationally based, all the compatability in the world may not prove successful where love is concerned.

I have always wondered what life would be like if I came from a culture of arranged marriage (arranged not forced: there's a difference). I would definitely try it for 6 months. Perhaps the fact that experts have chosen for you will have a placebo effect. Not many truly trust their own decision. We always want what others have or what others choose and tell us is good, to some degree. Maybe our trouble with marriage is our individuo-centric culture of independence and plenty.

While I find the idea interesting and it would be interesting to see who they think I would match with, just the thought of getting married fills me with anxiety, so I probably wouldn't

I had the opportunity to have an arranged marriage when I was in India - the idea of a mid-thirties single guy confused the hell out of my Indian friends.

I opted not to - despite how harx they tried. Generally they are very good at match-making and is usually successful. I am a bit too traditional I think.

There was a programme a couple of years ago where a woman asked her friends to find her a man. Her intention was a similar kind of thing- that they know her and could find someone they thought she'd like. It was interesting.
