Anything by Desmond Bagley - written in the 70s and 80s but so well written that they don't feel too dated.

If I had to pick one it'd probably be "Running Blind".

Bernard Cornwell is also good. The Kinf Alfred 'Uhtred' books have been serialised on TV but picking one single book I'd go for "Azincourt".

One from my later childhood that is still one of my favourite books is "Moonfleet" by John Meade Faulkner.

Well I finished it yesterday evening- it was a very challenging read for me as a man. Really got me questioning my use of power and how that related to my erotically charged relationships and encounters. It’s a fantastic book - profoundly thought provoking. I’ll now be using it to guide some deeper personal exploration.

I'm rereading the Red Riding quartet by David Peace, I'm on the 2nd book '1977' at the moment.

For those that haven't heard of them they're basically a fictional tale of police corruption set against the backdrop of the real life Yorkshire Ripper murders. Brilliant and terrifying books. Yorkshire police don't come of it too well.

I maybe should have used quotation marks when describing it as fictional. Having read interviews with the author he's in no doubt that that type of practices used by Yorkshire police in the book actually happened even if he hasn't used the names of real people. For example there's a character in the book clearly based on the real life case of Stefan Kiszko, a man with learning difficulties who was convicted of murdering an 11 year old girl but is later proven innocent. There's also strong vidence that in the real life case the police acted in an extremely dubious manner, something which is written about in more detail in the book.
