Oti is stunning. I think she's the most attractive of all the professional dancers.

I'm 52, Rimmer is 54. Finding men my age that turn my head like doesn't happen as often as I would like.

I think Brian was absolutely the right choice to go this week - his jive (and even his farewell dance) bought to mind that d*unk Uncle you always get at weddings who thinks he can dance but can't.

Was saying earlier though that once Simon and Ruth go (and they should be next barring any disasters) then it's going to start getting serious - those that are left after that (with the possible exception of Susan and Davood) are all capable of winning it - know Alexandra and Aston are the front runners currently but a lot of the others are coming up strong on the quiet (most notably Gemma).

I thought that Debbie did well given her age and the style/pace of the dance but it was a bit sloppy in places and definitely not worthy of 3 tens.

WEEK 6 REVIEW:

Halloween opened with a group dance to the Pet Shop Boys. Everyone looked nervous.

Jonnie/Cha Cha: Not the boy’s best but hopefully safe for his previous week’s efforts. You never can tell though.

Ruth/Quickstep: Ruth is progressing but just not at the rate of the others. A straight forward Quickstep, though it might not be enough to save her from the bottom two.

Simon/American Smooth: Simon said he was dancing a Viennese Waltz. He’s better at ballroom but it might be the 2nd week someone goes out to a Tom Jones number.

Gemma/Jive: Again not as good as last week, but a proper jive from the Dark Horse. The dancing started here with a good effort from Gemma.

Joe/Foxtrot: A Foxtrot with a few contemporary elements from the other Dark Horse. Straight 8’s across the board. Fair.

Mollie/Cha Cha: Even AJ flashing some flesh couldn’t distract from the fact that Mollie isn’t a Latin Girl. She’s more comfortable in the ballroom but not the worst dance of the night.

Alexandra/Tango: A bit underwhelming from the front runner for me, but I still look forward to her dancing.

Davood/Rhumba: Davood surprised me as I wasn’t expecting this to be as good as it was. The Judges mostly had positives to say with a few negatives, but I have to say as a dance Davood provided a good frame & some nice fluid movements for the notoriously difficult dance for the fellas. My favourite of the night.

Susan/Foxtrot: Normally Alex Salmond’s lovechild has been my guilty pleasure each week... up until now. Susan looked more like Dawn French in this straight forward Foxtrot & somewhere lost her usual sparkle. She’s still the one who is just loving being on the show she clearly adores. Hope she has a few weeks left in her yet & can surprise us.

Debbie/Charleston: Overmarked with 3 x 10’s but a great achievement for the 58 year old. Not the dance of the night for me.

Aston/Paso Doble: Choreographed to Aston’s strengths throwing in some Jackson style moves into the Paso. He managed to score 38 to the Nirvana classic.

There’s potential for a shock elimination but if voting goes to trend then Simon could be in danger this week.

I think they all lost a bit of vava voom last night with only Davood being the surprise of the night for me. Still an entertaining episode but the celebs appeared less enthusiastic & the dances less energetic. It must be difficult topping each week, but I’ve no doubt we’ve only witnessed the first of many peak moments. It just so happened this might have been Davood’s peak moment. The rest just got appearance money.

I agree with others, Debbie was overmarked, she was out of time at the start and getting into a lift was lumpy, plus she seemed to stutter at one point. I have seen better dances that didn't get a ten in the past.

I thought the whole show wasn't as good as other years and the make up did look like a kid had done half of it. What was Astons face meant to be? His dance I didn't like, sticking Micheal Jackson moves into most dances is not ballroom

I agree that the scoring was off, the 10s in general have felt rather forced to me, in previous years the 10s have come out on a dance when everyone watching has gone “wowee!” but it doesn’t feel like that to me this year. Maybe I got grumpy!

WEEK 7 REVIEW:

ALEXANDRA/Cha Cha:

The front runner kicked off the show with the best Cha Cha of all the celebs. I’m not sure it was her best dance & although she always delivers I want to see some progression now.

MOLLIE/Foxtrot:

Back on familiar territory with Ballroom which was stylish & competent. Mollie had only one trip up that she corrected nicely, but she’s mastering Ballroom without a doubt.

JOE/Charleston: Fun, energetic with swivel & a great lift. Joe is easily beating Aston by starting from no dance experience &, for me, the male celeb to watch. He’s certainly showing progression.

GEMMA/Salsa:

It was going quite well until her first lift then she seemed to lose her focus & confidence. The Judges gave her some good pointers & hopefully she can take those on board to come back stronger.

ASTON/Viennese Waltz:

In their VT Janette said if he “channelled” MJ he’d do amazing on the night. Well frankly I’m tired of all the Jackson influences in every dance, & he couldn’t help throw some in within the first 4 bars (2 of which he wasn’t actually dancing). It gave him his worst score from Craig, criticisms from the other Judges & scores leaving him second last on the Leader Board. Where others are concentrating on learning the dances properly, Aston is getting by with imitating the self proclaimed King of Pop week after week. Meanwhile Joe & Davood are coming up on the outside. He needed the wake up call if he wants to improve as much as the others. Again, good pointers from the Judges.

RUTH/Paso Doble:

Was it the best Paso ever? No. Was it her best dance? Very nearly. What it did do was entertain enormously & Ruth even showed some acting, humour & a more human side to her dance journey, but last as far as scoring.

DEBBIE/Tango:

Now I’ve defended Debbie over the criticism that she’s ballet trained, & however accomplished her Tango was I don’t think it was the perfect 40 that the Judges decreed it. Her head whips weren’t as polished to match Giovanni‘s to start with & the dance didn’t excite me as some other Tango’s in previous years.

JONNIE/Salsa:

Other than the lifts Jonnie really didn’t have much to do in this Salsa & he didn’t seem to enjoy it the way he does in his Ballroom. He’s falling behind the other boys & sadly I think he could be in danger this week. That said, his scores were not bad.

SUSAN/Jive:

Having lost a bit of her mojo last week, she came back with a fun, energetic Jive that left a smile on the face. If anyone has had the Strictly “journey” this year then this is the celeb who has. Another celeb who has progressed on the show & her joy of dancing just shines out every week.

DAVOOD/American Smooth:

This was Davood’s best dance yet. Stylish, nice presage lift, heel turn, hand placement, & leading his lady around the floor. Probably my favourite dance of his, maybe even the night. Certainly his scores are much healthier landing in the top half of the Leader Board.

We’re now half way through the series & I’m looking for progression as well as enjoyment from the celebs. The frontrunners Alexandra, Aston & Debbie are certainly good at providing the polished entertainment, but it’s the others that are improving week on week. Perhaps as we move closer to the final we’ll see a surprise twist with Joe/Davood, Gemma/Mollie, & Susan/Jonnie being contenders for the final. It would certainly be a surprise for the frontrunners & the BBC.

Pretty much agree with Random. Debbie was not a 40. I agree her head movements were not sharp. Gemma had lost it, quite early on. Aston was sloppy. Ruth, found very entertaining, great partnership with Anton. Dancer of the night, definitely Davood. His lifts were immaculate, especially the 'bum' lift amaaaaaazing!

Well I’ve actually been supportive of Debbie on the ballet trained debate front. I’ve even enjoyed Alexandra & Aston with their performing background. However, if the Judges don’t get their scores a bit more realistic I can see the public voting for the underdogs (those with no previous dance experience) & the year ending with another Chris Hollins type winner where the public vote for someone who enjoyed the journey.

Yeah couldn’t agree more, Darcey and Bruno’s votes were cop outs as I believe they judged them on previous dances.

I think Debbie was massively over marked last night, Alexandre's tango was a lot better last week in my opinion. For some reason I really like Gemma and Aljaz, and Oti and Jonnie. And Davood.

Yeah, it’s a shame he was a finalist all the way but suprises tend to happen every now and then especially if you get two decent dancers in the bottom two, I think when Ruth, Susan and possibly Jonnie go out that’s when the competition will hot up?

There's always one "shock" departure around this stage - although am a little surprised it was Aston as really had it between him and Alexandra to win it outright (with probably Gemma as the third finalist) - on the night though and out of the two in the DO I think the right choice was made.

That said should he have been in the DO in the first place? Probably not - definitely not his best dance but not one of the two worst on the night either.

I think Anton and Ruth's "fall" helped them more than it hindered them and can't help wondering how much it was gamesmanship on Anton's part (i.e. deliberate) to place an otherwise forgettable dance firmly in people's memories

If you go to James & Ola Jordan’s FB Page you’ll find a “live” video of them explaining their thoughts. It will also give you an insight to Craig’s background in dance & connection to the Tours.

As I said in an earlier post, Craig did not help Aston’s score which placed him second to last on the Leader Board (well below folk like Jonnie, Gemma & Susan), so Aston needed a HUGE public vote to have saved him.

From what the Jordan’s said it’s not the pro dancers fault either. I do think Janette choreographed to Aston’s strengths but relied too heavily on his MJ influence, however she doesn’t pick the music. That’s down to the producers.

It’s also been rumoured he would not go on the Tour due to his impending new baby. However that can’t be confirmed yet, so not sure if Aston was “set up”.

It’s certainly got people talking about SCD, so it’s publicity for the producers whichever way you look at it.

Whatever the “office politics” I still come back to the fact that Aston should not have been second last on the Leader Board. Even though I was bored with his King of Pop tributes in every dance. Nobody (especially me) likes to be manipulated by anybody - Judges, Producers, or anyone else.

I still don’t think Debbie’s dance deserved 40 either, or that some of the others should’ve been marked ahead of Aston.

The real Ballroom Dance world is tougher, more savage, & is a bit of a closed shop too. Just as other competitions such as Crufts are too.

However this involves 1: Public money from the licence fee. 2: Phone votes which cost the public money too. So perhaps the BBC should be forced to release the figures for the public vote either weekly or at the end of the series.

I’ll be curious to see how Craig justifies his 4 mark on ITT this week.

Anyway, the controversy won’t dim my sparkle or my glitter.

Whether it's fixed as in deliberately rigged or perhaps manipulated we'll probably never know - however I do think at times the judges comments/scores can have a massive influence on the public voting - to use a different example from Saturday- Susan's jive was ok, but not earth shattering - in fact I'd go as far as to say it was flat footed, lacked the "bounce" required, and almost seemed to be a series of set sequences rather than a flowing dance and yet, Craig aside, the judges comments didn't reflect that at all - Shirley saying something about them not decorating her house but could jive round it any time - which isn't really a comment on the technical aspects of the dance at all, but does influence the viewers in a positive way.

I'm no expert of course, but the number of times I'll pass comment from my untrained eye perspective and Craig will then say something similar and I think he's the one judge that actually tells it like it is.

In many circumstances I’d agree that Craig’s critiques are normally less ingratiating but perhaps doesn’t always give constructive pointers for the celebs to improve. His scores are usually less than the other Judges & we expect him to be brutal sometimes - but a 4 for Aston?

As I’ve also said, it wasn’t his best dance & I was bored of the MJ influences in every dance. So perhaps there are other influences.

My own view is that Brendan might leave this year & that Debbie won’t win as the public will have the last say at the final.

Oh I definitely think Craig marks low to prove a point at times - and also wonder if he does to counteract Bruno who marks high a lot of the time.

Final three for me now are probably Alexandra, Debbie and one from Gemma or Davood with a dark horse side bet on Joe

I'd also like to say a word in Johnny's favour - at no time has he played on, or allowed, his leg to impact his performances - another possible dark horse

I agree. I’m guessing Debbie has said yes to the Tour, but nonetheless she’s being overmarked. The Judges need to get their scores in order before the viewers retaliate.

All that said, the manipulation of the scores is nothing compared to the revaltion of the Paradise Papers today. So in the big scheme of things it’s small fry.

SCD WEEK 8 REVIEW

SUSAN/TANGO:

For me Susan is the people’s contestant. She’s the closest thing we’ve had to an ordinary member of the public on the Celeb show. She’s loving the whole Strictly experience & is gaining improvements week by week as she puts in the work to master the steps, her timing, & (please don’t shoot me down) overcome her stature & body shape to show that everyone, no matter what, can enjoy dancing. Her timing on her foot placement was spot on even if her head whips lacked a little. Still the one celeb I look forward to watching because she doesn’t come across as a celeb. Just an ordinary girl enjoying learning how to dance.

JOE/RHUMBA:

Joe’s another non showbiz celeb who is working very hard to perfect his dancing & taking it seriously. Like Susan before him, this was a straight forward dance with no faffing - just a good Rhumba presented very nicely for the audience to enjoy. Notoriously difficult for the make celebs Joe gave us a credible Rhumba for the full duration. Nice job. Fair scores.

RUTH/FOXTROT:

I’ve noticed that all Ruth’s dances start almost exactly the same with a side by side before the dance begins properly. The Judges seemed to slate her Foxtrot, & whilst this wasn’t the best Foxtrot it certainly wasn’t the worst & Ruth looked to be enjoying this. The scores were poor & Ruth got emotional with little Susan rushing in to comfort her.

DAVOOD/CHARLESTON:

Having had his breakthrough dance last week his confidence & ability keeps ascending. With Aston’s departure Davood & Joe are the male celebs to watch for going the distance.

GEMMA/VIENNESE WALTZ:

Having a wardrobe malfunction with a shoe in a dance with lots of continuous pivots & spin could account why this week Gemma focussed on the steps to the detriment of the emotional performance. With the pressure increasing she has no room to manoeuvre for a place a Blackpool. I hope this doesn’t spoil her chances.

ALEXANDRA/ARGENTINE TANGO:

The 1st AT of this series to Gotan Project’s “Mi Confesion” scored 2 x sultry 10’s for a complex & nicely executed dance. There was no doubt Alex could create the necessary passion & drama needed, along with some fast & furious gauchos, but was just shy of perfection in her leg extensions & lifts. I’d like to see her tackle this again in the final & perfect those extensions. Otherwise, this was the dance of the night for me.

MOLLIE/PASO DOBLE:

Coming immediately after that AT Mollie’s nerves showed, & her attack & shaping seemed to evaporate, especially as she walked around AJ who was on his knees. Mollie is doubting her abilities at the time she needs to be coming out firing on all cylinders. Another possible DO in the offing?

JONNIE/FOXTROT:

Another celeb who didn’t seem as comfortable as in previous weeks & who didn’t always pay attention to his arm finishes consistently. Some nice arm finishes, & some throwaway ones (usually out of hold), but sadly he’s allowing the other boys to stride ahead of him.

DEBBIE/SALSA:

There is no doubt Debbie can dance for someone nearing 60, but for me this Salsa had too many ugly moments despite an impressive one handed lift/spin. It seemed to focus on impressing with lifts rather than showcase the free spirit of the Salsa. It didn’t hurt her scores too much, but there were better dances, & I’ve seen better Salsas (think Jay McGuinness).

Davood & Alex finished topping the Leader Board, with Ruth, Jonnie & Mollie languishing at the bottom. Everyone wants to make Blackpool but one of the bottom 3 looks like missing out.

SCD BLACKPOOL WEEK 9 REVIEW

Mollie/Charleston:

Given the challenge of opening the show AJ threw every lift he could at the dance. Mollie still looked a little lost in places but it wasn’t the worst of the night.

Susan/PasoDoble:

The first of tonight’s Paso’s seemed a big stretch for Susan to cover &, for me, fell short. It seemed to be more of an ego stroke for Kevin & not a showcase for Susan. Is Susan now heading to the DO?

Debbie/Samba:

Again I found this one disappointing. Maybe it was the spinning camera but even her Samba Rolls came over as lumpy & awkward. Her facial expressions bothered me & I was doubting some of the Judges effusive comments but agreeing with Craig & Darcy about her energy & spiky moments. I just don’t think she’s as good as we’re being told she is now.

Jonnie/Tango:

By this point I’m starting to miss the US production values on their version (DWTS). Jonnie lacked the amount of attack I’m wanting in a Tango. The usual complaints arose from the Judges, but he did well to be in sync with the other pros, though to be fair that was more to do with the pros than our Paralypian. A possible DO this week?

Gemma/American Smooth:

This was the first dance of the night where I felt I saw some proper dancing. Gemma was back on form & the Judges rewarded her for showing a big improvement.

Davood/Paso Doble:

Strong shapes, lots of complex moves spoiled only by the odd spiky hand, but that could be forgiven for the dramatic music chosen for the dance. Still very enjoyable though.

Alexandra/Quickstep:

Alex never fails to deliver with a dance that had both Quickstep & some Charleston moves reminiscent of a Cotton Club Revue. The dance of the night? Yes, without a doubt.

Joe/Samba:

Katya is not letting up on Joe as she pushed him hard with content, choreography & lifts. Started off apprehensive & was just really warming up when there was a slight flaw on the last move. To his credit Joe managed to save it & ended the show on a high.

Gemma, Davood and Joe got my votes tonight. I thought Gemma's lifts were a bit clunky and awkward last week but they were very smooth tonight, a brilliant improvement IMO. Disappointed that the judges didn't comment on that though.

I thought Darcy commented on her stronger core going into the lifts, but I’d need to watch again on catchup to confirm. I thought she was much better than last week too.

Overall disappointed tonight - not sure if it was Blackpool nerves or the added distraction of other dancers or a combination of those factors - only dances I enjoyed were Gemma and Alexandra - the others all felt a little stale and clunky - Johnny and Susan for the dance off IMHO

"SCD BLACKPOOL WEEK 9 REVIEW

Mollie/Charleston:

Given the challenge of opening the show AJ threw every lift he could at the dance. Mollie still looked a little lost in places but it wasn’t the worst of the night.

Susan/PasoDoble:

The first of tonight’s Paso’s seemed a big stretch for Susan to cover &, for me, fell short. It seemed to be more of an ego stroke for Kevin & not a showcase for Susan. Is Susan now heading to the DO?

Debbie/Samba:

Again I found this one disappointing. Maybe it was the spinning camera but even her Samba Rolls came over as lumpy & awkward. Her facial expressions bothered me & I was doubting some of the Judges effusive comments but agreeing with Craig & Darcy about her energy & spiky moments. I just don’t think she’s as good as we’re being told she is now.

Jonnie/Tango:

By this point I’m starting to miss the US production values on their version (DWTS). Jonnie lacked the amount of attack I’m wanting in a Tango. The usual complaints arose from the Judges, but he did well to be in sync with the other pros, though to be fair that was more to do with the pros than our Paralypian. A possible DO this week?

Gemma/American Smooth:

This was the first dance of the night where I felt I saw some proper dancing. Gemma was back on form & the Judges rewarded her for showing a big improvement.

Davood/Paso Doble:

Strong shapes, lots of complex moves spoiled only by the odd spiky hand, but that could be forgiven for the dramatic music chosen for the dance. Still very enjoyable though.

Alexandra/Quickstep:

As always, pretty much agree, think Johnnie should go tomorrow. Alex is still the winner for me so far, with Davood a strong contender. Debbie, well her worst dance for me, no hip action, very flat. Gemma was much more comfortable tonight as was Mollie.

It’s such a big space to fill though from both a viewers at home perspective & the audience in the Tower Ballroom, so I completely understand why they throw extra dancers at this show. They’ve had more dancers in DWTS which don’t distract me. Also, don’t forget in real ballroom competitions & the original “Come Dancing” there were teams of dancers as well as individual pairs on the floor in elimination rounds, so it’s not unusual to have many more dancers on a bigger floor than in the studio set up.

As it’s only for one or two shows per series I usually find it’s ok to have additional dancers, but agree that some of the camera angles might have been better to show off the celebs this week.

Totally underwhelmed! Last year Danny Mac and Oti were amazing...can't remember any dance from last night.

Any of them could be in the dance off following their lack lustre performance.

All fair points, and I don't necessarily have a problem with the "support" dancers, and can see how they might enhance the overall feel of a dance, just find them distracting at times when they take the focus away from the competing couple.

Oh and I also now happen to know who was in the dance off, although don'T know the result

Am I alone in thinking it's about time they gave up the pretence of the show being over two actual nights, rather than all being filmed in one as it actually is?

With all the build up to Blackpool I think I was expecting so much more, I felt this way about Halloween too, but then I'm a fussy old dear! lol For a lady of her age I think Debbie is doing incredibly well (I wish I had half her agility and stamina!) but for me Alexandra and Davood stand out.

Just watching again & Darcy said Gemma kept her body “taught” in those lifts. Shirley’s comments were very positive, & in the main so were the boys’ as they both mentioned taking their advice on board. They gave Gemma a two 10’s & two 9’s so she’s definitely back on the up. Certainly better than Debbie this week imho.

Davood’s Paso definitely better than Susan’s & I go back to something I said earlier - he’s the Mark Wright of this series. A non dancer who has become much better & could be giving Joe a run for his money as the best male celeb. I wasn’t keen on the end walk away & felt it needed a better, more dramatic ending.

Easy on the eye too which helps.

Davood acts his characters better than Susan as well as having better footwork. But I love Susan's joy at it all. She took the comments and scores like they were a gift and was grateful. She's unlikely to become the best dancer, even with doing the tour, but she makes one want to dance, just for the joy of it.
