How long is a smoker still a smoker after they have stopped smoking?

A smoker who’s stopped smoking can only ever be an ex-smoker

But I think if you go a year without, the nhs classifies you as a non smoker

Is a smoker who stopped smoking but started vaping still a smoker or a vaper?

Maybe until you don’t fancy one or you find the smell offensive? I have now been a non-smoker for 16 years.

"How long is a smoker still a smoker after they have stopped smoking? "

For the purpose of their profile for instance.

Don't they say that alcoholics and drug addicts will always be addicts even if they are sober/clean? They are "in recovery"? Is smoking different? Not sure!

I gave up smoking on 28th August and quit vaping a few weeks later - I would consider myself a non-smoker as I now don't smoke anything. But I guess that weakness / addiction will always be somewhere inside me?!

If you haven’t had a fag for a few weeks and there’s no evidence suggesting otherwise I’d say you’re a non smoker

Smoking is the same as any other addiction. You can go through recovery etc but the label ‘cured’ or whatever applies when the person in question knows deep down they’re truly done

Hiding in the shadows

I smoked for over 20yrs.

Quit for 12yrs, just decided one day & that was it.

Never even gave smoking a thought even when with friends who did, then this January, been dealing with a heap of shit, someone offered me a fag.

I'm trying to quit again, but this time round I'm really struggling.

So guess after 12yrs I was still a smoker

My parents were told it's 10 years now

Apparently lots of people "relapse" up to 10 years afterwards

When their clothes, hair, skin, house and car stop smelling of it.

I have about one cigarette a year. Does that mean I'm a smoker?

As soon as they stub that cigarette up.

You only become a smoker again next time you spark one up

Maybe you just became a smoker rather than always being one? Do you remember what it was that helped you stop before?

To be honest I think it's open to interpretation ... I would say 2 and a half years is pretty damn good!

If you DO relapse it's not a crime (I've never smoked but both my parents gave up and I saw how difficult it was for them and I admire them for doing it ... and anyone else who does too!

Well done you

I get cravings when I'm standing outside with my smoking friends. Oddly it isn't for an actual cigarette but more the action of smoking.

Thank you! After many tries it finally happened and now would never be tempted to start again

It was my youngest son being hospitalised all weekend after a massive asthma attack.

I never smoked around my children or in the house.

I spent the weekend in hospital with him, when we came out on the Sunday, his dad asked to take him to see his parents.

He came home & stunk of fags. I was livid they'd smoked around him after what had happened.

Threw all my baccy down the loo there & then, saying "if I can quit, you & your family can at least not smoke around him"

Anger is often a good incentive

As soon as they say "No thanks, I don't smoke" instead of "No thanks, I'm giving up", when someone offers them a cigarette.
