Mash ups!

I`m sure many already know about them, but for those that don`t, mashups are two or more songs made into one. Some people hate them, I love them.

Some are simply good music, others will make you smile (or cringe) with their absurdity.

Bet you never thought you would see rick astley and nirvana in the same sentance, let alone music video.

https://youtu.be/NN75im_us4k

Or snoop dog and boney M. https://youtu.be/IdBentqJzzA

This Placebo v`s Rhianna fits together perfectly https://youtu.be/Q0MmSCjNYDo

As does The Doors v`s Tupac https://youtu.be/_ZJwKobeoEM

Youtube is full of them and whatever your taste in music you will find some crackers.

I would love to hear if anyone has any favourites or even made one of their own.

Not a mash up as such, but it definately puts a new spin on things.

Indeed I have, they're good

Andy Eastwood & Jake Shimabukuro are amazing players.

I have a 1930's ukulele banjo that was given to me by the son of one of the founding members of the George Formby Society

There are loads of ukulele covers on you tube.

Not ukulele but this is a great spin on ac/dc thunderstruck...

George Formby was born and lived not far from me. I`ve never played uke, only guitar (a long time ago).

That vid you posted is cool, i love covers like that where it is completely different to the original. The juxtaposition makes it for me, even if it`s not a style i would normally listen too.

Here is one of my fave ukulele covers, you just don`t expect it from the look of the lad but he smashes it.

This is another cover i like but its not really a famous song, but its from one of my favourite artists.

The cover is pretty basic but again a contrast from what you would expect. A girl from malasia, singing with a jamaican patois,

I saw an Elvis fronted Nirvana tribute act who genuinely did a mash up of Love Me Tender and the Nirvana track (endulge in non consensual sex with) Me. One of the most surreal yet genius moments I've ever witnessed on stage. In fact he came in to the crowd to do it.

Michael Jackson vs. S Club 7 - Don't Stop Billie Jean [Audio HQ] HD

Songs like this are why i love mashups. I don`t really care for s club 7 or MJ but put them together and it puts a smile on my face. It`s still cheesy and naff but it`s fun and you can appreciate the effort that someone has put in to make it work seamlessly.

No, I happened to find a nice bit of 4x2 and shaped it, the frets are cocktail sticks, tuning pegs are stainless nuts and bolts, there's an old cutlery handle for a bridge, pick-up cover is a hardwood offcut. It's got proper uke strings on it tho!

A professional guitar/uke player was impressed how good it sounded

A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

Not technically a mashup but probably the first mix of songs I remember wowed me in a club, & what became the basis for the “Stars On 45” run of hits back in the 80’s.

A LITTE BIT OF HISTORY:

The record turned out to be a 12-inch single called "Let's Do It In The 80's Great Hits," credited to a nonexistent band called Passion and issued on a nonexistent record label called Alto. The medley had its origin in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and it was later revealed that it was the work of one Michel Ali, together with two professional DJs, Michel Gendreau and Paul Richer. Gendreau and Richer both specialised in the art of "splicing," stringing together snippets of music from different genres, in varying keys and BPMs and from different sound sources, at this time still predominantly from vinyl records. The first version of the medley was eight minutes long, and it included parts from some twenty tracks of which only three were by the Beatles: "No Reply," "I'll Be Back," and "Drive My Car." A later extended, 16-minute, 30-track mix of the same medley labeled "Bits and Pieces III" added another five Beatles titles: "*Do You Want to Know a Secret," "We Can Work It Out," "I Should Have Known Better," "Nowhere Man," and "You're Gonna Lose That Girl. Later Jaap Eegermont would bootleg the bootleggers by getting session singers to reproduce the segueways that became the blueprint for the Stars On 45 singles.

I still prefer the original bootleg white label of the original, & what was one of the inspirations for me to learn to mix & be a DJ.

Cheers mate!

That song you posted has brought back a memory of a record that i had when i was a kid but i can`t find it anywhere on youtube after a quick look. It was a (cheesy) dance remix of the boogie woogie bugle boy sometime around the late 80`s.

Another cheesy record i had back then was jive bunny and the mastermixers.

No wonder my musical taste is a bit out there. Also further explains my love of mashups haha.

Quality! I love the really ridiculous ones, esp when they work as well as this one does. I always wonder what these bands think of their music being taken in a completely different direction.

I had never heard of this before mate, will have do do some more reading/listening into this. The 80`s was a massive leap in music where people started to think outside of the usual constrains of what music `should` be. I think the explosion of electronics/samplers/synthesisers gave people a new creativity which spread to all genres of music.

Mashups are a natural progression from medleys like this, follow through to the 80`s/90`s and dance music pushed it even further by not just using mixing as a transgression between songs, it became a way to make songs you like into the version of the song you would have made by tweaking it with your favourite bits from other songs.

Hey I’m older than I look. I remember Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” 12” from the mid 70’s!

Anyway here’s a link to the history of the 12” single:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12-inch_single

Which in turn led to DJ mixing:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatmatching

Nicky Siano (who recently appeared at a gig in Glasgow).

My own influences were the Glasgow Gay Clubs of the 70’s & 80’s, which I then transposed to straight venues. It seemed that the most popular straight clubs had DJ’s that simply played music without any effort whatsoever to mix or “Beatmatch”.

The 80’s saw an explosion of electronic music from Georgio Moroder, Patrick Cowley’s work with Sylvester, & Kraftwerk influencing the likes of Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure) & Dave Stewart (Tourists, Eurythmics) & many others to create a new genre with the new technologies that were becoming available. DJ’s such as Ian Levine (Heaven) were also producing new music for the Gay market in the form of Hi NRG, whilst Italian & other European DJ’s produced Eurobeat records.

With the Rave Scene of the 90’s there was a profusion of new dance sounds from House & Techno through to Hip Hop & Drum N Bass.

As technology becomes cheaper everyone gets better access to equipment where they can splice, sample, mix & produce new sounds mostly by borrowing or paying tribute to their musical heroes.

Every era it seems borrows from the past bringing exciting music to a fresh generation, but many won’t even realise they are listening to something with its roots in some other musical heritage.

It’s no different with mashups (themselves not a new phenomena as they’ve been playing on MTV for years), which can even bring new songs to the attention of old farts like me! Lol

Just be sure that whatever your musical loves may be, there’s going to be a link that might surprise you, & that even today’s DJ superstars who are collaborating with well known singers are paying homage somewhere along the line to musical influences from an older era.

So to finish off here’s an old “mashup” or medley from a bygone age:

"I had never heard of this before mate, will have do do some more reading/listening into this. The 80`s was a massive leap in music where people started to think outside of the usual constrains of what music `should` be. I think the explosion of electronics/samplers/synthesisers gave people a new creativity which spread to all genres of music.

Hey I’m older than I look. I remember Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” 12” from the mid 70’s!

Anyway here’s a link to the history of the 12” single:

Which in turn led to DJ mixing:

Thanks, will have a read.

I was born 1980`s so my main influence was dance music. From hanging about with the older kids in the late 80`s listening to acid house, in the 90`s it was hardcore/techno and in 96 i started going to wigan pier and got more into house music.

All of those where filled with samples, 80`s/early 90`s mainly from films/other songs/computer games anything and everything, like this one MESSIAH - 'Temple Of Dreams' https://youtu.be/wKduhUXa0rg. There were also remixes of `normal` songs all over the place

DJ Vibes - Oxygen https://youtu.be/pEuS78iXdGo.

The pier played a lot of mashup like this mixing eminem superman with sandy b - world go round. https://youtu.be/h1eUBU4FqcQ.

Got back into mashups in the mid 2000`s via youtube and then mtv mashups and everynow and then like to loose a few hours searching out new ones, hence this thread.

You are right there is definitely something for everyone as any song/genre is fair game and that is what keeps it interesting.
