So in today's Sun 'news'paper Humberside Police have been criticised after pictured were published of officers having a break from duty and enjoying themselves on the Dodgems at Hull Fair.

Hull Fair is one of the largest annual fairs in the country, it's open for 9 days and attracts over half a million visitors, some officers have been working 10hr shifts there for it's duration, patrolling the fair, including reasurring the public after a ride broke down with 32 people on board, stranded in mid air for over 7 hours.

Personally I think these officers have earned a 5 minute break to relax and enjoy themselves.

Surely this also benefits public relations between the police and the public?

What are your views on this?

i think they are entitled to a break and how they choose to spend it is up to them

Can't really criticise them for that but that's the press for you! They're human beings just as everyone else is so why shouldn't they enjoy themselves when they're on their break? The press today will just print anything to fill the pages I'm sure of it! The Police are criticised if they distance themselves from the public and are criticised if they integrate with the public they can't win unfortunately!

It just looked like it was a bit of fun. I think it was nice. It would be different if they were constantly found playing around during the festival, but that wasn't the case.

But it's gotten everyone talking about it and buying the sun, so mission accomplished by the paper.

I never heard of anyone complaining about police officers dancing with members of the public at Notting Hill Carnival or anything like that.

There was a BBC big weekend music festival a few months back near Hull, some people were 'outraged' at police officers dancing along with kids and eating ice creams while on duty.

I remember when I was a kid, the friendly local Bobby on his bike was about every day, knew our names and where we lived, seemed to be a lot less crime back then

The thing is there's a big campaign about reminding kids that the police are there to help not to feared (Im sure I saw an ad campaign about not using the "here comes the policeman" threat to stop naughty behaviour).

So surely anything that promotes them as being one of us and part of our community is a good thing?

It's pleasant to read positive viewpoints about this.

Invariably FB is full of negative comments about having nothing better to do. They're human beings, every occupation should encourage smiling, having fun and engaging. It may increase productivity!!

It's not like they were going to ignore calls whilst having fun, they'll simply leave and get on with it.

I think it was great for PR.

Every year in Hull (and other places too) there is an 999 services weekend in East Park, traffic cars, riot vans and motorbikes; fire engines; ambulances, 1st responder cars & bikes, Air Ambulance if available, it's very popular event with displays, food, balloons and other gifts, kids and adults alike getting to sit in the vehicles and play with the blues&two's.

Always prepared for a call out, and if one comes in there off!

They're never off duty even when not working

I wouldn't have an issue with this.

Many years ago on a family holiday to turkey a military police officer took my 1 year old niece out of her buggy and took her on a funfair ride. He passed his gun to a colleague to look after. He said she should have her turn too, it wasn't fair her big brother had all the fun.
