Not as in just using big words for the sake of it

But in bring able to express yourself clearly?

(I think I'm already failing this thread )

is it something you've always had or has experience taught you, or do you still grunt monosyllabically?

Articulate? Around 4 I would say but my vocabulary increases all the time. I come from a fairly big extended family so as kids we heard and picked up on a wide range of conversation.

I would agree with that. Life experience and increased comfort in speaking in general helps one to express ones self better.

Me neither. How can anyone remember what they were like as a child anyway. I know how was shy, but I could have been having riveting conversations with my parents at the age of 4.

OK, looking at articulate in a different context, I see in you profile picture you are in the lotus position...

I've been able to sit like that since I was 11 or 12, then rock forward and walk a reasonable distance on my knees, can you?

"I also wonder why you say "using big words for the sake of it". Words are there to be used "

Because some people like to believe that by using "big words" that they are somehow intellectually superior, when often it is actually more cogent to use simpler vocabulary

That is not to do a disservice to those who do, and the joy that our language can bring

sometimes I use big words that I don't fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis

I believe the people who use "big words" in that way are far fewer than people think.

I've recently seen some shocking displays of shaming people for using their extended vocabulary by people who would soon cry foul if their lesser command of the language was mocked.

Hiding in the shadows

Verbally, at a very early age. People always used to comment how well spoken I was for a child.

My eldest son was the same, 2yrs old & could hold a rational conversation on some strange topics.

I am however dyslexic, so writing my words down, takes a lot of thought & effort.

I wasn't diagnosed til 16, failed miserably at school as I used distraction techniques to avoid work I couldn't do

As one who doesn't have the greatest command of the Queens English...I get mocked on a regular basis by at least one on here (you know the twat) .

But I am far from horrified by this as I take it in good jest...but at the same time I have the confidence to mock back on what I sometimes see as a overuse of the "big words" and I feel it is recieved with the same humour as it is intended.

So I feel there is no need for anyone to get on their high horses over the use of people's words on here. ..just so long as it is intended in fun

Not being a forum regular particularly, I have no frame of reference and this strikes me as a little odd. You seem perfectly coherent, I don't understand why you'd be mocked for your use of language.

But to get back on topic:

I was actually extremely articulate at a very young age, I remember being one of the most advanced readers in my class at primarily school (although labelled "thick" due to my dreadful handwriting and crippling stammer) and had excellent comprehension. However I seem to be dumbing-down with age. I use a lot of "filler" words when I speak (generally "fucking" or "cunt") and often find myself casting around for the right doodah to make myself thingymajig because I've forgotten the whatchamacallit.
