It's not nit picking, the storm came from the bay of Biscay, it was nothing to do with the hurricane the guy who phoned Micheal fish was talking about!. Hurricanes always start on the equator where sea temperatures are above 26 degrees and very little wind sheer develops, they either spin cyclonic or anticyclonic depending on whether they head north or south this is caused by the Coriolis effect. From there they can head along way north or south and still be a hurricane but would very very very rarely hit this far north due to wind sheer effects which kill the eye. So in essence Micheal fish was right on both counts, no hurricane hit the UK and certainly the one the guy who phoned in about certainly didn't as it died in the mid Atlantic | |||

"The 2015 storms caused utter devastation here in Cumbria, the floods were unreal with a major city almost completely under water & roads destroyed and closed for months......I'm hoping they've over exaggerated because it would be unthinkable for it to be like that again ". It's funny, not many people remember the three anticyclonic storms of 2010 which brought wide spread flooding to the UK!. Funny thing happened was those three storms punched a bit of a hole in the artic vortex and down poured the winter cold that they all remembered.... So much for climate change was muttered constantly without them realising that it was the climate change that enabled it to happen as three back to back anticyclonic storms this far north are rare things indeed. Ophelia looks like it will hit south Ireland as possibly a cat 1 but more likely tropical storm force, I wouldn't want to be on a ferry in the Irish sea Monday | |||

I've been in a cyclone and a hurricane and the few bins that get blown over are nothing compared to a real weather event" 30 years ago in the south east was way more than a few bins being blown over. It wasn't a hurricane but buildings were destroyed and damaged, woodland decimated and more importantly lives were lost. | |||

You're welcome "It is also still south of the Azores...over tropical waters. As it moves north it will spread out and winds will drop....it will simply be a deep depression by our latitudes. Currently expected to pass West of Ireland. "i am a weather nerd so i live things like this "ophelia" is unusual as its basically a hurricane thats gone the opposite direction to a normal hurricane.... they normally go east to west... then go up once they reach american and then come back so the last lot of big rain we had a few weeks ago was actually the final embers of hurricanes jose and maria (yes that maria that basically wiped out puerto rico) the other thing odd with regards to ophelia is that is "should be weakening the further north it is going... but at the moment because the waters are so warm... it is got more powerful so it went up from a cat 2 to a cat 3 overnight..... it will start to weaken because the waters will start to cool down and it will eventually hit land and tear itself up.... but reaching irland it could still be a very low hurricane or very high tropical storm...." | |||
