I suppose it's the reason i heard talk of the storm of 1987 Thursday.

Hopefully the destruction is minimal and lives aren't lost, but it's doubtful. Trees will be uprooted, homes and cars destroyed.

Leave them. The worms drag them into the lawn and help feed it.

Ahem...the uk does not get hurricanes.

As a hurricane can only exist in tropical waters

We can get strong winds...tail ends of hurricanes but not a actual hurricane.

Well yes and no.... using the Beaufort Scale a Force 12 wind (73mph plus) is officially designated "hurricane force" but I agree it's not a hurricane as you quite rightly point out

"I think I should get my Kite ready ,,,,,, cant see it being any stronger than the force needed to pass straight through the heads of alarmist doom merchants "

I really don't get this reaction. We have had winds reaching 90 miles an hour in this country. They have caused devastation, ok not on a grand scale like recent events in India and parts of America, but are, nevertheless, devastating to those affected. We may not have hatches to batten down, but will deal with any consequences.

I, for one, hope the winds do drop before they reach our shores, as is often the case, but my heart will go out in sympathy if they don't, to anyone affected, even the bleeps here who may think the warnings = a little bit windy/ a storm in a teacup/ alarmists/ 40 mile an hour winds etc.

I take the warnings seriously and agree totally it could be serious and devastating for any affected. I mentioned 40mph as I work at sea as Skipper of a fishing boat and I'm an anorak when it comes to the weather, I have to be glued to the forecasts.

Hey I know the strength of winds as a 40 mph one blow my 3 month old 30 ft static caravan summersaulting through the air and wiping out the caravan two plots away.

My point was the technicality that it was not a hurricane.

Was a bloody strong winds though that would more then likely seen my family and myself off.

I remember the storm of 1987 quite vividly. Driving to work, dodging all the trees that had come down/been uprooted, etc. As I'm selling my house I can only hope that my current house and my new one don't incur any damage. Having said that, as long as no one dies or is badly injured because of it then that's all that really matters. Good excuse to snuggle under the covers with a nice young man and shut the "hurricane" out

.

It's not nit picking, the storm came from the bay of Biscay, it was nothing to do with the hurricane the guy who phoned Micheal fish was talking about!.

Hurricanes always start on the equator where sea temperatures are above 26 degrees and very little wind sheer develops, they either spin cyclonic or anticyclonic depending on whether they head north or south this is caused by the Coriolis effect.

From there they can head along way north or south and still be a hurricane but would very very very rarely hit this far north due to wind sheer effects which kill the eye.

So in essence Micheal fish was right on both counts, no hurricane hit the UK and certainly the one the guy who phoned in about certainly didn't as it died in the mid Atlantic

The mid Atlantic currently has a 3-4 degree anomaly pushing it closer to that magic 26 degree number

.

It's funny, not many people remember the three anticyclonic storms of 2010 which brought wide spread flooding to the UK!.

Funny thing happened was those three storms punched a bit of a hole in the artic vortex and down poured the winter cold that they all remembered.... So much for climate change was muttered constantly without them realising that it was the climate change that enabled it to happen as three back to back anticyclonic storms this far north are rare things indeed.

Ophelia looks like it will hit south Ireland as possibly a cat 1 but more likely tropical storm force, I wouldn't want to be on a ferry in the Irish sea Monday

30 years ago in the south east was way more than a few bins being blown over.

It wasn't a hurricane but buildings were destroyed and damaged, woodland decimated and more importantly lives were lost.

I lived in the south east the last time, it was very frightening so I don't think it's right to get into the semantics or dismiss how people felt.

People were injured and killed and it cost a lot of money to repair the devastation to buildings.

Dolphins? porpoise I would of thought unless bottle nosed dolphin quite rare to see off coast. when you say breaching are they getting stuck on the sand/gravel?

Breaching as in leaping about three foot out of the water, not beaching!

It's very unusual behaviour up here

I,ve seen porpoise clear the water at siloth in the past by about a foot or so but 3 feet is all together different probabily bottle nosed dolphins.

"Ahem...the uk does not get hurricanes.

As a hurricane can only exist in tropical waters

We can get strong winds...tail ends of hurricanes but not a actual hurricane.

No need to thank me

Actually... this storm named Ophelia has been categorised as a Category 2 Hurricane, upgraded from Cat1 earlier today

You're welcome "

It is also still south of the Azores...over tropical waters. As it moves north it will spread out and winds will drop....it will simply be a deep depression by our latitudes. Currently expected to pass West of Ireland. Monday will see strong winds, a decent bit of rain....but nothing we don't get several times each and every winter.....slow news day kinda story....go back to bed folks!

Just been catching up with the latest forecasts for Ophelia. Looks like it's still gonna hit SW Ireland tomorrow morning hitting SW Scotland tomorrow night. Winds up to storm force 10 forecast. Worst hit will be Ireland and the SW coast, Irish Sea and western Scotland. Unless it changes direction the rest of the country won't get the brunt of it. Could be nasty for those in its path

i am a weather nerd so i live things like this

"ophelia" is unusual as its basically a hurricane thats gone the opposite direction to a normal hurricane.... they normally go east to west... then go up once they reach american and then come back

so the last lot of big rain we had a few weeks ago was actually the final embers of hurricanes jose and maria (yes that maria that basically wiped out puerto rico)

the other thing odd with regards to ophelia is that is "should be weakening the further north it is going... but at the moment because the waters are so warm... it is got more powerful so it went up from a cat 2 to a cat 3 overnight.....

it will start to weaken because the waters will start to cool down and it will eventually hit land and tear itself up.... but reaching irland it could still be a very low hurricane or very high tropical storm....

I noticed a slight breeze pick up, but what is noticeable is how the light has changed outdoors, earlier the sun was pink which I presume is pollution, this was just before 1pm now the sun has gone behind the cloud, the light is almost yellow on occasions I,ve seen it similar to this before presumably the sun was the same colour then, Is orphelia stirring all this up she seems to be probabily the main highlight of the year weatherwise it presently looks surreal outdoors... and on another note I hope nobody comes to harm and damage is limited.

The coloured tint to the sun/sky is due to Ophelia dragging up Saharan dust apparently.
