When I was in high school I took a course called Music in Film (it was for those of us who couldn't make it in art class ). There are some crazy interesting connotations in the music chosen for films. One of the most interesting clases I've ever taken.

That sounds like a brilliant class! It must be a really interesting job too. I'd enjoy Ligeia's input in music/movie decision making, I reckon she'd have some interesting choices.

Hans Zimmer's score for Gladiator was amazing - beautiful music full of emotion and so apt for each scene in which it featured . It's very evocative if you listen to it on its own. But then he's an unbelievably talented composer.

That sounds fun, I studied film as part of my degree and music used was part of that.

Also owned the top gun sound track for too many years

But my favourite music in film moments

Queen who wants to live forever - highlander - heartbreaking.

Blow monkeys - you don't own me - dirty dancing

Lauren wood - fallen - pretty woman

This ones a bit of a cheat as not really a song in this sense but a classical/choral piece

Fauré in paradisum requiem - copycat

I love subtle ones or the happy accidents. The character themes written for Withnail, for example, are so subtle and so fitting as is the use of already existing songs on the soundtrack. The placeholder classical (small c before anyone points out they weren't Classical at all) tracks used in 2001 that Kubrick just got clearance for in the end because he edited the scenes to them so gloriously there was no point in using the score he had commissioned. Recentish though the score for Dredd was cracking. Especially the requiem at the end. And I love how that came about (it involves YouTube and Justin Bieber of all things). I could go on all night about sound design and music placement in film. But I won't.

There are no accidents - especially in music chosen for tv/film. There's original score - music written specifically for the scene or titles and found music - where previously released music is used.

Sometimes the use of found music launches the artist of course - had any of you heard of Roxette before pretty woman?

Estella thanks for the compliment, it's a subject I find very interesting. I'm a book lover at heart but I adore film and music too having been raised in a family containing a DJ and a session drummer not much choice on the music front

I do a fair rendition of 'another suitcase' myself I think

The bit in 'Once Upon A Time In The West' when you find out why Charles Bronson's character carries the harmonica everywhere might be my favourite use of music in a scene.

As for whole soundtracks a recent fave is 'The Duke Of Burgundy' scored by Cats Eyes. Folk, classical, abstract noise, found sounds... like the film it's very strange but very sexy and sensual. Its unobtrusive enough to have on in the background too when you're, er... you know, that thing we're all here for ??

I get what you're saying but it's more I view film as an audiovisual text. But that's maybe getting a little too deep for a sat night on fab!

Regarding adaptation, well some work some don't. Rare for an adaptation to be well received. Part of the problem is that we often forget that our reading of a book is just that, our reading of it, the reader as editor and director kinda - just see how heated discussions on casting of well known literary characters gets - especially of comic book characters.

"The bit in 'Once Upon A Time In The West' when you find out why Charles Bronson's character carries the harmonica everywhere might be my favourite use of music in a scene.

Mr

Two films I've not seen but definitely will now. Actually I've been meaning to watch Once Upon for a while, but you've incentivised me

I shall watch the other and fantasise about you now too.

Well the latter film would certainly give you a few interesting ideas

Mr"

"There are no accidents - especially in music chosen for tv/film.

So true, sometimes it's the movie that maketh the music! Yes, as a bookworm myself it's the whole package that I enjoy about films, how the cinematography, casting, music all beings the story of the book to life.

Sorry - beloved subject of mine

We should get a drink and discuss sometime, I'd love to hear more. "

Would love to - not been in London for yonks! But far for a drink.n a blether though

Last weekend I watched "American Made" starring Tom Cruise - I'm not a massive Tom Cruise fan, but the film was very good indeed. Made even better by a fantastic soundtrack. I was delighted to hear the fantastic Allman Brothers Band's live version of Elmore James "One Way Out"

Highlander soundtrack is a great shout. I'm a huge Queen fan and I love their version of New York,New York in the car scene. The Kurgan is a good duet partner for Freddie.
