Local ghost stories...

Tell me one about where you live - you don't have to reveal where you are if you don't want to.

A local story about my town surrounds St Mark's Eve, which is the 24th of April each year. As legend tells, at midnight, in the oldest graveyard in the town, there's a parade of all the people in the town who will die in the next year, and if you see yourself in the parade you'll die there and then. Supposedly, in 1786, a woman saw herself in the parade and collapsed and died in the graveyard. Apparently the ghost of an evil witch haunts part of the above mentioned graveyard.

East Hull

In Hull there is 'The beast of Barmston Drain' aka 'Old Stinker' a legendary 8ft werewolf that has been seen on numerous occasions along the 23mile long waterway, also home to stories of 'Black eyed children' who may be the ghosts of the 100+ recorded deaths along it's banks since 1824.

I’m afraid mines not that impressive but this time last year I was working nights in a dementia unit. We were allowed to sleep for 1 hour each shift and used to go find a quiet room with a sofa a get some kip. One night I woke up to find I couldn’t move but there was a lady shaking my shoulders trying to wake me up. After about 10 minutes I was able to wake properly and get up, went in search of my colleagues to see what they wanted and neither of them had been anywhere near me! Never went in that room again...

I've briefly read about the werewolf, the black eyed children doesn't ring a bell

Used to work at Butlins many years ago, and the staff quarters were above the what used to be an old cinema that burnt down apparently killing some children. Lots of shiny things that kids would like used to go missing. Kids coats would appear in our rooms. And some of my friends actually had a small child appear in their room during the middle of the night x

That's kind of creepy but really sad.

I currently work in a big old hotel that's been turned into a modern chain hotel, but back in the day there used to be a bar, ballrooms, spa areas, a club, all sorts on the basement level which is now unsafe and derelict. In the 90s, a chef who had epilepsy worked in the original kitchen in the basement and he died when he had a fit and fell into the fryers and got really badly burnt. Now, apparently, if you're alone in the kitchen upstairs which we now use, sometimes you can hear disembodied footsteps in the corridor leading from the dining area to the kitchen. I've not heard footsteps yet, but this week I kept getting the feeling that someone was watching over my shoulder while I've been in the kitchen alone... probably checking on my food prep!

I've actually worked in my fair share of haunted buildings.

Near to where I live.

A woman who was attacked down Bedworth Road aka as Rabbit Lane, later committed suicide as a result of her psychological trauma. Her phantom is said to stand by the roadside, waiting for a lift. One witness who spotted her said she wore a long white dress, possibly a nightdress, and had long black matted hair. Another driver heading towards Astley in May 2012 said she spotted a figure on the roadside with her hands against her face which was holding a dreadful expression. Two more witnesses in December 2012 described a figure standing by the road with long black matted hair, although this time the figure was dressed all in black.

This one isn't strictly local to me, but I went there on a school trip in Year 3 and was told this story, and I currently work with someone who grew up in the gatehouse of the hall...

EARLY in the 17th century, a young girl on her way home to Burton Agnes Hall was cruelly murdered.

She was Anne Griffith. She was wearing jewellery and was attacked by two roughnecks as she walked through the village. She was assaulted, robbed and beaten with a cudgel and died some hours later as she crawled home, leaving a trail of blood in her wake.

Anne was found, barely alive, in the gateway to the hall by a servant, but she gasped a most peculiar wish with her dying breath. She told the servant that after her death, she wanted her head to be cut off and for it to remain in her beautiful house for ever. She whispered that if her wishes were not carried out terrible consequences would occur.

Her request was not granted by her family who preferred a more conventional burial of their beloved daughter. But on the night of her funeral, they heard wailing and the banging of doors in the house.

The same happened every night for weeks, so the decision was made to exhume Anne’s body and remove the head. When they opened the coffin they saw a grinning skull looking at them. They cut it off and placed it in a box to be kept in the house. Anne was finally at rest and peace prevailed.

Many years later, when a new family moved into the house, the skull was found and thrown into the rubbish cart, but the horse pulling the cart would not move. After much beating of the horse, it stood rigid, the skull was removed and the horse moved off.

The new family was informed of the story of Anne’s curse by the villagers and they soon returned the skull to the house. It is known to have been walled up adjacent to the main staircase behind a picture of Anne, and there is rests today.

Anne continues to haunt the house at Burton Agnes and is regularly seen appearing through the picture on the wall, before descending the stairs to walk outside into the garden, a happy soul again.

We have a local legend of the Phantom Hitchhiker in Stockport.

The story goes that for the last 50+ years a lone young woman will be stood at the side of the road waiting for someone to offer her a lift, she's gotten into the backs of cars, into trucks and even the pillion if a motorcycle.

She then directs the good Samaritan to where she wants to go, but when they arrive at the place she directed them to she disappears.

She has been sighted close to the town centre, but she seems to be a different age each time she's spotted, the only thing in common with every sighting is that she's always waiting around the same place, and she disappears around the same area in Hazel Grove

I used to work at Mile End Hospital in the East End of London. The building used to be the workhouse and you never really felt like you were alone. One incident happened when one of the medical records clerks was trying to find a set of misfired notes. She had just about given up, and turned to a colleague saying 'I wish I could find those bloody notes'. There was a loud crash from the next room and the notes were found lying in the middle of the floor.

I was in my room one night and suddenly out of nowhere cobwebs and dust flew all over the place. There a gasp from me and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, then I realised I had pulled my cock out for the first time in ages

North Bucks

The local town of Olney has plenty of stories about the devil residing in the town. He is said to have his headless horse drawn coach race down the high street and disappear into a bottomless pond called the whirly pit at the end of the high street.

He is then said to emerge at a meadow called “Sway gog” which suffered such disruption when he emerged that if you stand on a nearby bridge it’s meant to make you feel sick and disoriented when you look upon the field.

It’s also said that if you stand on the bridge at midnight you feel it shake from his coach passing over. We used to fish down there and it was always a bit of a strange feeling being in the area.

There is a well half way down th high street that is said to have candles burning at the bottom. And when they go out the devil will return.

We are not too far away from Clophill church which was also a very weird place.

I've got a few experiences myself but the most recent was at work last week, it was 2am and the building was empty. Me and a colleague could hear what sounded like somebody playing the spoons upstairs on the third floor. We crept upstairs as this spoon playing continued and burst into the kitchen where it was coming from to find nothing and nobody at all. We were the only two people in the building. The next day a female colleague said she'd been shoved in the back on the same floor but when she turned there was nobody there.

Another locallish one for me... Stocksbridge is just outside Sheffield, and my parents ran a few pubs when I was between 6 & 8. Here's one from that area...

The Stocksbridge Bypass has been the source of ghostly claims right from the start of its construction. Workmen reported seeing a monk standing nearby, just watching people and traffic. The monk is still seen from time and time, and he’s been known to appear inside cars briefly before leaving again. Ghostly children have been seen playing under the bridge late at night, singing playground songs and rhymes.

There is a ruined castle near me, Most Haunted ( yer, I know) filmed there.

My son was bar manager of the pub next to the ruins, and every time he went to change a barrel something would pinch his bum.

Turns out when the castle was in occupancy there were tunnels which led from the celler to the case grounds, the servant girl from the castle was caught having an affair with the landlord.

When the affair was discovered she threw herself down the stairs breaking her neck.

So now the saucy minx of a ghost likes to grope and pinch the staff.

Luckily my boy is spiritual, he was never fazed.

I also live close to an old army base, lots of activity there of soldiers in the old watchtower on the airfield.

Closer to home, my German Shepherd who passed on 8 years ago is still here. We've all seen him, I usually see him at night. His pointy ears, and feel him staring at me.

Our new German Shepherd will never lay where our old one used too, we had to move his bed to another location, I swear it's because my boy is still there.

Freaked my sons girlfriend out when she slept over, as she saw what she thought was our recent pup coming through the bedroom door, she said he just stood by the bed watching, she called his name expecting a response, next thing our pup heard his name and come padding upstairs, she was freaked, because if that wasn't K by the bed, then who was it lol.

She ended up waking my son to tell him, he just said "aww yeah, it's M. Should've told you he's still here"

Does she find it comforting? I certainly do, especially because i'm sorry to say we weren't there when he passed over, he died overnight at the Vets after being taken ill, he was a poorly boy had epilepsy. My heart broke, he was my world.

And yup, I still have his ashes, they are next to my bed, but I like it. He always slept there in life, why change it.

My cat who adored him likes to sleep on the casket, I think she knows he's in there.

My sister had a bit of a protective ghost. It would do a good job of creeping out her pig of an ex. It would knock on the living room door as if asking to come in when we sat there. She had to ask it to leave not long after the ex. It had done it's job

Have lived in plenty of spooky houses as a child, I blame mum's side of the family they seem to attract spirits. They ran a cafe in Battle that had cold soulless rooms no one could enter. Mum used to have to sleep with curtain hooks being thrown at her. Was quite matter of fact about it when she told us wide eyed terrified kids. Sister bought our family home , and the first thing she did even before decorating was call in a priest

My gran was involved in a car accident in africa years and years ago. She was laying on the floor bleeding and out of nowhere an abnormally big and tall lady dressed in a nurse outfit came and told her she was going to take her to a hospital where she works.

Few days later my granmother asked for the lady who helped her out so she could thank her, but nobody from that hospital came forward and nobody that worked there fit the description. This was many decades ago and that was the only hospital in the capital like some 300miles away from the next hospital

Awww, pet ghosts

My family had a cat who passed away at 15 just after I turned 16, our current cat was born exactly two weeks after what would have been our old cat's 16th birthday.

Anyway, my parents tend to take our current cat away with them on holiday while I housesit for them. A few years ago my mum had her desk facing the living room doorway which faces onto the stairs, and our old cat's body was found on the landing, like he was sleeping. When I was sat at the desk I noticed a flash of white coming down the stairs out the corner of my eye, I turned to face the staircase head on expecting it to be a trick of the light, but I actually saw the full spectral image of our old cat. I occasionally see flashes of him in the house when our current cat isn't in.

I have seen three ghosts, two of which I was with another person, and have often walked through what I call cold spots, the first ghost was a full colour ghost of a monk in a Brown habit, when I lived in Maidstone me and a friend when I was young used to find streams and follow them to there source this particular day we had reached a fence and climbed over it then through a small wooded area before us was a grass field with two small corpses we both stopped at the edge of the wood with the corps to our left and right and about 60 to 80 yards between them, while we stood there a monk moved out of the corps to the right and moved to wards the one on the left about halfway he started to walk into the ground and disappeared, we waited some time and edged over to the spot, we found a odd sight a brick lined stairway leading to a small area with a bricked up entrance, we looked at each other and ran!

Excellent thread Yvaine.

At certain times and locations I have felt that sensation of being watched, the unexplained cold spells. Shortly after his passing I was out driving and heard my grandads voice, as plain as if he was sat in the passenger seat.

I took comfort from it.

Locally there was a book produced "The Ghosts of Leigh" that had some creepy tales in it.
