"Do you have any suggestions for his replacement then OP? " This is the problem all good saying get rid of southgate, but who is ready to take the helm ?? Cant see us going for the foreign manager route again as well that fell on its arse. Eddie Howe has still a lot to prove at club level. Not gonna really achieve much with Bournemouth. No other English candidates left seeing as there is only 4 in the premier league and they are all managing clubs that will be involved in relegation battles come end of the season ![]()

"Is it the manager that is bad or the players, or both?" I don't think you can push both in the same pool (is that even a phrase?), I think it's more a case of the money that's available to top clubs and the fact that they can splash out £???????? in pursuit of so called superstars, rather than bring through raw talent from this country who have to play in the lower divisions and therefore have no experience of playing against top level players.

Maybe their clubs can accommodate the way that they play by buying players who "fit the system", it's very hard though when you have players who try their hardest, but clearly aren't good enough. I worked on the building of St. George's Park (the new England training park) and hopefully will bring some of the younger players together to amalgamate with the senior team and make us a stronger team in the future.

" I think you,ve made a good point There its always easy to blame the manager but if the moneys not there or the players are,nt there, I,ll go for the latter of those two, and it certainly controls the game you (want) to watch or hear nothing will ever change the performance of the team it is a low point in the game itself and many teams find themselves in it mine in particular at present, but even at this level they can still surprise you Like jimmy greaves used to say.. footballs a funny old game.. The FA have appointed dinosaurs & misfits over the last couple of decades. I don't think Southgate has many options open to him at present due to the nature of English clubs being able to pay out top dollar for average foreign imports, thus restricting our homegrown talent to occasional appearances in a league cup match against some tough opponents from Scunthorpe.

"England team are average at best no world class players. So what is it that the Germans are doing right that we aren't then?" Ace I am by no means an expert on Football. I watch it now and then if England are playing so another member would better answer that one.I can see even through amateur eyes though that Egland at the moment are just average and would be crushed by any of the top world class teams.

"England team are average at best no world class players. So what is it that the Germans are doing right that we aren't then?" "The Germans youth team players get the chances to test themselves at the highest level in the leagues. Whereas most of our talented kids are left languishing on premier league benches, or playing the lower leagues. We've a batch of great youth talent, who are winning tournaments, and becoming a band of brothers internationally. Yet where are they week in week out? One or two might get a rare outing in the tampax league trophy or some irrelevant league fixture. " That was my point earlier up the thread, too many so called foreign superstars signed for too much money are making it very difficult for our youngsters to break into first team football to gain the experience. I recon Little Eaton reserves could have scored at least a couple of goals last night ![]()

"Does the problem go further back than the youth setups? Are youngsters lauded for failure instead of having a fear of failure in their mindset? Is there too much 'well done on gaining 8th place out of 8'? While watching the recent Athletics and Swimming world championships, commentators were full of 'congratulations on an amazing achievement in making a final'. It's almost like mediocrity is celebrated at times. Regardless of sport. I teach it's all about 'the enjoyment' and I believe if you do enjoy you will succeed. That's not just to do with sport

The FA have appointed dinosaurs & misfits over the last couple of decades. As much as I agree with you how the game as changed, the game can still have a twist in it that is what greavie was on about unpredictable or could be at times depending on who you played and for me that can still be the same case on the field nothing is set in stone unless your playing teams like man utd of course, a good example with derbys form at present with the big derby comeing up who in their right mind could give a result on that game in the bookies, the way derby have been playing has been similar to forest but if they have a bad day which of late they have been haveing or they might have a sting in the ever unpredictable tail of derby Which is badly needed for that game, I just hope derby come out wanting to play the 90 minutes they owe the fans that and more but this has been lacking in so many games (will this one make any difference) it will do to the fans. I don't think Southgate has many options open to him at present due to the nature of English clubs being able to pay out top dollar for average foreign imports, thus restricting our homegrown talent to occasional appearances in a league cup match against some tough opponents from Scunthorpe. "England are one of the most overarated country's ever, your better off supporting Scotland they know there shite so everything's a bonus. Fact....apart from beating holland in the euros in 96, since 1966 England have not beaten a top 10 ranked team in a knockout round and before someone says Spain in 96 they were not ranked in the top 10 at the time." So the hand of god from marradonna in 1986 is all forgotten about, he said years later in a Interview when asked about that game against england in the world cup he used his hand to help that ball into the net to knock england out and most likely the only reason Argentina won that game and won the world cup, he did it for revenge from loseing a friend in the falklands war, and yes thats the last time england have looked a potential winning team with Alan shearer and the likes along with beckham etc.

I know what you mean but we need to drop the culture of paying for mediocrity ...... He will never be the manager we need .... This tolerance of " that will do" is unacceptable for any side that is motivated by success ![]() I have watched all my life from inside and outside the bubble of how the media first, then fans build everything up about England out of perspective. It's great how everyone gets involved, even down to newspapers giving away flags for the windows and music stars/comedians bringing massive songs/hits out. These people are the first to turn on the manager the minute it goes wrong. Due to this I fail to see the appeal for the job, must be paid pretty decent to do it. Unless you reach a final they'll call you a name, photo shop your face and go through your past, present and future private life with a toothpick looking for a reason why it went so wrong. IMO it goes wrong because English/British players are sat on the bench or not even in the first team whereas the new £50M Spanish (eg) superstar plays all game, every game. Add to that the technical deficiencies and I think it's obvious. Of course there are more to it than this but hopefully if people become more realistic the pressure becomes slightly less and thus they get a better chance to succeed.

"Theses players are not rested enough ,they play all season then have to train for world cup ,if he choose his team early in the season ,took them out then rested them for a while ,then trained them they would be ready and not tired .." imo they became jaded not because of games played in xmas ... but because of games played in the last few weeks. They have a very explosive style of play with no real respite within a game. Even their second easiest game needed to be 100% all game. The really good teams can smash and grab at times, and play keep ball at times. France are a good example in this World Cup. Indeed Croatia are not a bad example which is why they still looked fresh after 3x 120 mins.

Don't get me wrong I'm proud of the boys but we all work hard and don't need massive amounts of time off, I used to play football daily on my lunch break play 5 a side Tuesday train Thursdays and Saturdays then play Sunday's plus pay for the privilege of playing and training they did well im proud but they get paud well it's not a nice result but rest is not an excuse Playing for England? Nothing. The fees they get are donated to good causes (there is a FA charity which distributes the money to grassroots football)." In all fairness it's not just grass routes football it goes to any more but it also goes to a charity that exclusively helps poorly children with in the UK.

"But still a failure. Hopefully he has already resigned." Out of curiosity do you expect everyone to get their job right 100% of the time? I imagine there would not be many employed people in the UK if that were the case. We all need to fail, to learn and get better. I think this has been a valuable experience for a young group if players. Worth a bet for the Euros 2020...

"But still a failure. Hopefully he has already resigned." Days ago, people were hailing him for what he had done; now, you want him out??? I have admitted on here that I don't follow the game. BUT... look at the overall picture like a business! He's got the English Team further than any other England Team Manager has done in years. Yes, he's made operational errors along the way but you learn from them, move on and build from the mistakes. But he has also brought hope to a lot of people too! If your idea is to have a "winning team" after a short space of time, that won't work in any business. It takes time and maybe he should be looking ahead now to the next World Cup as a goal in its own right!

"But still a failure. Hopefully he has already resigned." Jeez. And who would you replace him with? Big Sam? GS is a breath of fresh air after all the jobsworths who preceded him. Or do you prefer a perenially underachieving team of self-obsessed media stars?

"Southgate has been better than anyone recently, his mistakes have been staying with Sterling when he has been not playing well and Alli when he hasn't looked fit. but you can't blame Southgate for a ref who ignores foul after foul which deserve yellow cards and which would normally have had 3 of the opposition sent off, as well as a goal scored which had a boot so high that any Euro game would have given a foul and booked the player" So many boxes ticked here!

"Southgate stays. The whole England setup is learning but but the foundations are there to do something big in the next euros and World Cup. The sad thing is this has been the most open World Cup in recent memory. A chance missed." Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Spain just to mention a few will be looking to rebuild over the next few years, We have the foundations of a good team. I believe in Southgate and the spirit that he has brought to the squad (not necessarily his starting XI), but that comes through experience. Glenn Hoddle was someone who could have taken us further if he wasn't hounded by the press.....

"But still a failure. Hopefully he has already resigned." A failure ???? Really considering at the beggining of the tournament our expectations were quite low. I was expecting us to get no further than the last 16 let alone to the semis. Yes there is a lot of building to do tho with this current team there is longevity and now the lads have experience. With our youth teams already doing well just hope their parent clubs give them the game time. Hopefully we can go further in the euros in 2 years time with Gareth in charge.

I might be wrong but we weren't expected to get to the semi finals right? So he actually over achieved on what was thought to be a realistic target, yes? That's like booking a flight to malaga and landing on the moon! Some people use the wildest extremes to justify their posture.... ![]() ![]() I can't work out if you're supporting my comment or taking the piss lol

"Some of the criticism is unbelievable. Your team reached the last four. The last four! 190-odd countries around the world did not do that. England did. I'd be incredibly proud if that was my team. They gave a lot of pleasure to people at a time of chaos and strife, too. Their conduct was exemplary and I've not heard a bad word said about the supporters. What's not to like about that? Well said ![]() ![]() ![]()

" Out of curiosity do you expect everyone to get their job right 100% of the time? Worth a bet for the Euros 2020... Top bit.... yes absolutely.... that is why people get paid. Think pharmacists, pilots, train drivers, doctors etc etc. But I know what you are saying!! I would be willing to put another bet on your above list. We could find 100s of examples where those people have got it wrong... ...and not lost their jobs. Particularly early in their careers. It is entirely human to make mistakes, not learning from them is what should be punished. I completely agree....but that was not what was asked. He asked if we expect them to get their job right 100% of the time.
