With the new blade runner coming out soon I thought it was time to watch the original especially with everyone saying how good it was and often listed as being in the top best films ever, what am I missing I thought it was rubbish

One of our very favourite films. The wife and i bonded over it during our courtship, surprising really because i then discovered she has mainly shite taste in films!

It's our first wedding anniversary in a few weeks so we'll go watch the new one then.

Love the original Blade Runner.

Need to look deeper into it rather than just a simulant hunter.

The Simulants who know they are going to die. Who have seen more things than a human could.

The simulant who doesnt know she is a simulant.

And the Hunter who may be a simulant or not.

Hope the new is just as good as the original.

Make sure you watch the directors extra extra cut or whatever its called. And Rutger Hauers Tears in rain monologue is one of the finest moments in cinema history!

I am sure Blade Runner was based on a French novel and quite philosophical, impossible to get this whole concept into a film but Ridley Scott did well... Scotts grandfather opened the first news reel cinema in Newcastle and now one of the oldest surviving examples in the UK, so at least he has a damned good background in cinematography

Make sure you watch the directors extra extra cut or whatever its called. And Rutger Hauers Tears in rain monologue is one of the finest moments in cinema history!

do yourself a favour ... read the book ... it's called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ... it gives the story a context that the film just poked around in a flimsy way ... don't get me wrong the film was pretty awesome back in it's day on the big screen .... but the book encapsulates what the writer was saying and the film is just a film

It was an american novel called 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?' by Philip K Dick. Good book with really great ideas but one of the rare instances where i preferred the film. If i remember rightly the book was heavier on the ecology side of things, something only really hinted at in the film which focussed more on the question of what it means to be human.

Yes. You summarise it well. Its deffo thought provoking. The little origami clues etc. Just a brilliant film.

Ah the plot thickens! The voiceover version stops you interpreting the film and spoils it somewhat. Watch one of the other versions without it. Practically a different film.

maybe because you've seen 1500 other films that came after it, which 'borrowed' its originality of look, direction and cinematographic design. its also not for the disposable, regurgitated 'all style and no substance' crowd that films today seem to be aimed at...without 2001, there wouldn't have been Star Wars

Blade runner is one of my most favorite films that it actually stung to see that some do not think it’s epic

The whole feel of it, the monologue st the end....

I also enjoyed the book a different way. I have never in my real life come across anyone who has read it except my pops

If I recall correctly there are 2 old versions, one with voice overs and one without.

The voice overs had to be added as test screenings showed American audiences were not understanding it without the explanations!

There are lots of films based on Dick's books.

I watched the original on Friday night for the same reason. Took a while to 'get into' and did enjoy it, the effects were good for an 80's movie.

To be honest I was up very late one evening watching it so wasn’t particularly giving it my full attention but I think the main problem was everyone says how good it was so I was expecting to be blown away but I just felt let down, I’m going to read the books as others have suggested and try watching the directors cut with out deckard droning on throughout the whole thing and see what I think then

It definitely requires a few viewings! It's slow and the plot doesn't whip along; but the production design and FX inspired generations of people.

Multiple watches opens it up a lot more, so you can interpret different things with it.

Now it's a film that seems dated.. it was very much the 80's style of dark and Moody with a synth background track.. very similar in style to the original tron movie and Dune.

Scratch beneath that dated veneer and you have what is a very philosophical question; the right of life and death over a sentient form along with some great acting and direction.

I'm not gonna hold my breath on the latest edition being as good.

Tried to watch it again, for the third time... still never made it to the end! Really do not see why this is as hyped as it is? Went on Facebook halfway through, then fell asleep before it finished! Give me Logan's Run any day for a good retro classic!

I(T)love the film it will never 'date', the book was...meh but I was probably disappointed because it took me so long to find a copy. About time for a re-view I think before the new one opens.

Maybe it was contextual but I was overawed by the original as it was complex, brilliantly produced and seemed wondrous - maybe I've been spoilt by more modern computer graphics since, I don't know.

I hope the new film goes to an even better level, otherwise they should not have bothered

The original film is one of my top movies of all time.

I am seeing the new film tomorrow night. I was worried that it would be a let down in the manner of Alien 3 (the first two films are another two of my favourites) and the awful Matrix sequels, but I am hopeful it will be good after what I've heard about it.

Philip K Dick died before the original came out (he wasn't that old) and never got to see adaptations of his work, such as Minority Report, The Man in the High Castle and the current Electric Dreams (on Channel 4). His influence on SF over the past 35 years is substantial.
