I agree very expensive....

I think I'd rather invest that sort of money in an Airstream caravan .... I know they cost a small fortune but as an investment they far exceed a camper and you can park them up on site while you explore the area your visiting rather than dragging around the stinking contents of a septic tank,,,,,

I think there's a bit of old romance & nostalgia with VW vans.

I've always wanted one, have hired a couple of times when the kids were little & we had great fun but having recently stayed in a friend's motor home, I realised how impractical they are in comparison.

I have so much regret after selling my old type 2. How I miss the overheating problems, no brakes, sloppy steering and a top speed of 50mph (with the wind blowing me along as well) hahaha. But then I could always make a fry up or a brew whilst stuck in traffic lol

I have a T5. I got the van as a pre registered vehicle but with no miles on it and had it converted by the countries largest converter. Saved nearly £10k on dealer prices for an identical camper.

I rent it out some of the time to help mitigate the cost. The demand is so great that I am looking round for a decent T2 just to rent out.

Had a bay window1973 camper, blew 2 engines to bits , so got rid of air cooled crap and fitted a skooby doo in it, lowered it uprated the brakes , it was scary how quick it was.

. To be honest I now quite like it but would love a T5

Prices are constantly on the up and can't decide on a t4 or a t5. Would like a 2.5 lwb. Hopefully prices will settle when winter sets in.

Cost 2k for the van and another 600 to get the rnr bed, cupboards, side window fitted and carpeted inside.

Same already done would of been twice as much.

Had a serious look into them and tbh still considering. We love the VW reliability and the fact you can travel like a car, covering a lot of area but the expense puts you in campervan territory, however, you can't take them everywhere like the camper. So many decisions, might just get a tourer caravan and bite the bullet on time, but we don't want too, grrr. Truth be told if we had £40,000 spare cash we'd have the camper......Sorry for not helping much.

I'm torn myself. I've seen a camper for sale. A Mercedes lwb sprinter with all the bells and whistles including a toilet. At 130,000mls on the clock it was only just broken in. For the same price i would be lucky to get a basic T5 builders van.

Did all the work ourselves appart from the window.

Worth joining a vw club to get discounts, thats how the window was done. Cheaper than walking in off the street.

A daily is what I'm after. I'm not too fussed about having a shower or a toilet onboard. A lwb is a happy medium.

Yes i think I'd like a night heater and an ac power point but a large bottle of water, a washing up bowl and a camping stove would do the job of a full kitchen.

As you want a daily, if you get a van you might consider getting it registered as a camper, otherwise you will be restricted to the lower van speed limits on A and B roads. To do this, you will need to convert to a minimum camper van standard - the rules are online.

My T4 is an ex-AA van so has the side windows from the factory, but is still registered as a van. I didn't bother registering it as a camper and now have 3 points due to travelling at 54mph in 60mph limit

I would say a T4 over an early T5. As with most vehicles, the first models of a new run tend to have issues that get ironed over a few years.

If you go for a T4, try to find the 5cyl 2.5 tdi. If it's a T5, go for the 4 cyl tdi engines.

Obviously depends on what you're planning to use it for. A toilet is handy for saving middle of the night trips across a site to the loo and allows you to stay at places with no facilities, so broadens your options.

Showers can be done anywhere - £20 powered shower that sticks to the side of the van and connected to cigarette lighter.

Vans like sprinters, ducatos, crafters allow you to stand up inside, get changed more easily and cook indoors when it's raining.

I seem to live in a neighbourhood full of them. But alas I don't have one. They seem to be mostly kept for show only round here. I dream of parking one up at the coast on a weekend for a bit of rough living and beach life

We owned a 1971 bay window bus, it was our pride and joy. We spend a lot of time in Cornwall and Devon as I am a keen surfer. Unfortunatley we sold it when we got on the property ladder

We did own a T4 for a short while after. I converted it in to a camper van, well I built a bed in the back so we could use it for weekends away. It wasnt the same though. We do have plans to get another air cooled bus in the future.

So. A low mileage, standard, late model 2.5 long wheelbase T4. Then convert to personal requirements preferably to camper standard so as to be used as a daily runabout.

I think I've learned more on this thread in a few days than i have in the 6 months of being on a number of T4/T5 Facebook groups.

Mine was me forgetting for a few moments and staying with the flow of traffic in a national speed limit (as I would in my car) but as a van I was over the lower 50mph limit.

I would say a T4 over an early T5. As with most vehicles, the first models of a new run tend to have issues that get ironed over a few years.

If you go for a T4, try to find the 5cyl 2.5 tdi. If it's a T5, go for the 4 cyl tdi engines.

I'd say go with a late T4. Work on both daily si know which one I'd go for. T5's can be real money pits

So. A low mileage, standard, late model 2.5 long wheelbase T4. Then convert to personal requirements preferably to camper standard so as to be used as a daily runabout.

Reliability is probably the only thing steering me towards a T5 rather than a T4. A mechanic i am definitely not.

T5 for us but it is his work van, but a good few extras added so the do the show scene and have done for a number of years, i do keep asking for him to replace my gti with a camper van so we can go and have some fun in a camper, and I guess it could be a great road trip seeing all the comments on here we could meet some people for fun

I'm looking to get something as a weekend van, but T4's are very overpriced, so I'm wondering abou a Mazda Bongo.

Getting a van registered as a camper means you get an extra 10mph on A roads, but more importantly, it drops the insurance premium.

Convincing the dvla that it genuinely is a camper requires evidence of a fitted bed, table & cooker, either 2 burner or microwave.

I've a honda stepwagon they are bulletproof very reliable and easy to work on being a honda they come in a 2liter or a 2.4 petrol 2wd or 4wd good on fuel and very roomy I take it out every week x

yes 1.9 engine are great so are the 2.5 but have a few problems best do research or join a forum. My 1.9 is clocking 170,000 now and still going like a train.

We camped next to a couple with a T5 in the summer. She said that prior to them it had only one previous owner. Unfortunately that owner was an electricity company and while it was one owner, it was hundreds of drivers

Cost her a small fortune getting it in order.

Take any "bulletproof" claims with a lot of salt.

Old ambulances are a good bet and anything similar that requires a strict maintenance and service schedule.

I had a T2 in the eighties, lots of fun and expense!

I'm currently looking for a T5 or 6. I went to the show at NEC a few weeks back checking out some great layout- conversion ideas. Got some great advice as well.

Rear tailgates are a better option than barn doors.

Keep you height under 6'6" (2.0m) to get in those car parks and multi-storey's and go for a van with a higher payload... Amazing how much weight a good conversion can add to a vehicle, even before you think of adding bikes etc !

I work a lot of gigs and part of whether do at some of them is run the camper van fields...

Quite often you'll get one person who breaks down right in a gate or on the road whilst they've been waiting in traffic to get in and the old air cooled motor overheats like hell...or they just break down because they're old and have had so many 'enthusiast' owners tinker with them they've become a Hodge podge of work. The old ones especially I don't get..so much money and you don't get more for it, just the name/brand/'hey look at me I'm a free spirited vw owner' thing

You could get a newer, more reliable, more spacious, quicker quieter van for far less money..

Sure it's all about 'character' or whatever but I just don't see it myself.

I'm sure an actual good example would be good to own but not for the money it would cost.

We had a 1970 early bay window. 1641 big bore, twin Kadrons, teledial wheels, it was my pride and joy and an absolute money pit.

We sold it to get a t4 in the end, which aren't as cool but are much more practical.

Most probably Brazilian made T2s that have been converted into campers by a company called Danbury in Bristol. Though Brazilian production stopped about five years ago.
