So post a favourite poem or just name one so we can check it out! My contribution is...

This Be The Verse

By Philip Larkin.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.

They may not mean to, but they do.

They fill you with the faults they had

And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn

By fools in old-style hats and coats,

Who half the time were soppy-stern

And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.

It deepens like a coastal shelf.

Get out as early as you can,

And don’t have any kids yourself.

Or, even better. Compose your own!

My Father kept a garden.

A garden of the heart;

He planted all the good things,

That gave my life its start.

He turned me to the sunshine,

And encouraged me to dream:

Fostering and nurturing

The seeds of self-esteem.

And when the winds and rain came,

He protected me enough;

But not too much because he knew

I would stand up strong and tough.

His constant good example,

Always taught me right from wrong;

Markers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long.

I am my grandfathers garden,

I am his legacy.

I read this at my Granddads funeral, most heartbreaking day of my life.

Nice one, Is that one of your own? Think we're by ourselves here!

No. My granddad was a keen gardener, when he was dying I found that poem and had a copy made for me to go on the wall.

Glasgow

Graham Tiler is my favourite poet.

Eloquent, northern, thoughtful honesty.

I think radio 2s Jo whiley program last night featured or was from the poetry festival in Hull. Should be available on I player. Probably worth checking out.
