My interpretation of it is it's about changing the hierarchy of society from the established norm to a system based on humanities values.Could be wrong though

It's about Bob Dylan's view of 60s America and potentially the end of the world. I'm sure it's said to reflect a passage in the bible but not sure which one.

I couldn't tell you what it's about but I know Dylan was listening to a lot of Hank Williams and was known to be reading the Bible around the time it was written. It certainly has biblical overtones.

One theory is that Dylan jumbled the verses up and the last verse is in fact the first verse and the first verse the last verse. You can argue the song makes more sense if you read it that way.

This is in my view part of it. He is in my opinion playing with archetypes as he is the seeker for truth he, in this song, is navigating the modern day Babylon. The thief and the joker are two other archetypes 'the Outlaw' and 'the Fool'. They both challenge the conventional norms of society, particularly 'morality' and 'acceptability'. He seems to suggest the search for meaning needs the courage to stand outside the norms, turn accepted dogma and mores on their head, laughing at the cosmic joke that life is.

I ponder and wonder a lot usually in the wee small hours. Stuff like when you look at the night sky and it strikes you where does that end? And is somebody on another planet doing the same thing? Is there another me in a parallel universe doing exactly what I'm doing now? Or the exact opposite?

I wish I could come up with some suitably deep personal opinion for a response, but as many times as I have heard the hendrix version over the years i havent actually listened to it until now, so never tried to interpret anything.

After reading the lyrics while hearing the song, I can appreciate that it can question normality on several levels.
