Is it really banter? Or just people being rude and thoughtless - and hiding behind the word 'banter'?

I run a workshop (for young people) on banter and bullying and according to most, banter is okay as long as you own it.

So, if you mock someone about say their appearance, it's all good as long as you say, "Yeah I did say that but I own it!"

I blame the Kardashians.

Usually you hear "it's just banter!" when someone has been a total arse to someone else.

I'd actually rather take the punch in the head sometimes.

Hear hear, phrases such as "now them, ya big useless c**t" is basically good morning at work, and long may it continue.

Didn't realise "banter" is that bad a word.

I am always having friendly banter amongst friends and on occasions with people I don't know in forums.

Sometimes that leads to light flanter and even lighter santer.

Nothing malicious, just having fun. It seems some use "banter" for different reasons then.

My mother excuses being vile by saying 'I was only joking!' Some people shouldn't be allowed to try humour.

Maybe I'm one of those politically correct snowflakes but if one of my colleagues called me a cunt they'd not do it a secondescending tme.

As an aside it's interesting that you typed c××t in a way to minimise the potential offence ye word may cause while arguing it's use as harmless banter

I think a lot of it comes down to the work environment, where I work it's constant piss taking...it's a great laugh and I wouldn't change it.

Cunt, dickhead, wanker etc all terms on endearment at work

You know you're not friendly with someone when first names and polite conversation is used

It can be an excuse for being a complete shit.

But it is also fun in the right environment. It also wipes away a veneer of people being overly sensitive needlessly.

In lots of (male?) workplaces it is the de facto method of fun.

It can of course be taken too far, or used wrong time / wrong place.

The thing with banter, like swearing, is knowing when it's appropriate or not.

Good banter and shit speak are not the same.

And it's knowing when you may have overstepped the mark and apologising for doing so...there you have it

The word banter is too often used against people. Said something nasty and inexcusable? Why not try and humiliate your victim further by telling them its only banter. Thereby negating their feelings and implying they have no sense of humour while saying its all their fault anyway.

I banter back and forth with my friends but in the old sense of the word.
