All public service workers deserve a pay rise, including Police and Prison Officers but Nurses in particular. I know newly qualified RGN's who are reliant on foodbanks after they have paid all their monthly bills. It's a sad indictement on our society that the people we rely most heavily upon are the ones we reward (there's a misnomer) the least

Really, what the government has done is given the police and the prison guards a slightly smaller reduction in their relative earnings. BUT they've said that the money has to come out of the existing (inadequate) funds... making it look like its the staff are responsible for taking money away from the services.

In real terms, the public sector pay has dropped by about 15% in relation to inflation.

The Tantric Tea Shop

Its an absolute disgrace!

Probation privatised and a mess, police stressed out, teachers quitting in droves, nurses at their wits end (blame agenda for change!)...and the bankers etc still get their bonuses, wil be interesting what happens on British Virgin Islands and other tax havens re assistance compared t other islands following Irma

It looks bleak. I'm now funded by Europe and its very unlikely it will be renewed. Youth work reliant on European funding.. It's almost laughable. Except I won't be able to pay my rent.

I think the intention is to offer it to all public sector workers, however their timing sucks as many have either just received this year’s payrise or just about too.

Many public sector workers are taking home less than they were 7/8 sometimes more years ago due to changes to tax, NI and pensions. Not to mention some departments have had this years pay award delayed due to purdah earlier in the year.

But whilst a payrise would be nice I don't know where its coming from as huge cuts are still being made across the department I work in and guess we are not alone in that.

A desperate measure by tbe tory government who are beginning to realise just how much the police and pris on service hate them and austerity. Both services are struggling just as much as the NHS and are on the verge of collapse. A disastrous move that will do nothibg to appeasee the police or prison services while further alienating the rest of the public sector

If an RGN is relying on food banks then thy are living outwith their means in other areas. Our pay is scandalous for the work we do, however, there are many, many others far worse off. Against the national population average it is a decent wage.

Maybe the socialist in me coming out but when I hear foodbank sob stories from people making 22k+ a year I despair, it's just a nonsense!

In simple terms we can't keep spending what we haven't got . Doing just that for almost a generation has caused the problems we have now .

So while I agree that all public sector workers should earn more , if the money isn't there then how should it be funded ?

It is already sorted.

Hard Brexit causes crash in value of pound combined with no access without costs and tariffs in major world markets. Financial depression, birth rate drops, haves hunker down and survive, poor struggle to survive and become grateful for ant morsel they get dropped from the table of the moneyed.

Finally a truly stratified society where the rich can put the poor back in their prison of poverty.

You have to remember Tories want a return to Victorian Values.
