Why October?

Why sober?

Some charity thing perhaps? If it's not OP why don't you turn into a charity event...

Say with the money saved on drink by Every one in that month being given to a homeless charity before winter.

Just a random thought..

I'm off back to polishing my rock in case I get visitors to the man cave...

I don't drink when I'm on my own to be be fair sometimes it can be months between drinks anyway.... on this basis I'm not going to specifically give it up on a particular month.

As for charitable donations... I do what I can or donate when I am able

I've just found out it's a Macmillan Cancer thing. I'm in. The suggestion was not aimed at telling people what to do or where to give.

And I agree people should give if they can afford it to those charities that are near to their heart for what ever personal reasons.... and in whatever way they feel comfortable doing so.

It was meant unusually for me as a serious suggestion that if we are going to participate in any event like don't drink in October we should consider ways of reaching out to others so they benefit in whatever way from our actions.

That way not only do we have the "fun" of participating but in some small way we change the life of others who may not share our good fortune.

Maybe fab should sponser a charity of the year...although that would need some careful structuring bearing in mind the attitudes of some to how fabbers choose to live their lives.

Just my random thought from the man cave...

I have no doubt your intentions are good in this

However after working in charities and see how the donations are distributed. I have got to say I have become very sceptical of them myself.

Charities like any other organisation require functioning structures compliance with Charities Acts Companies Acts etc in order to function. There are around 200,000 charities in the UK with varying degrees of professionalism but they have to pay the costs of all that infrastructure from somewhere...their income perhaps?

And the use and distribution of funds may often be not that we may perceive it should be but...

To suggest from anecdotal experience that bad examples should colour the judgement of all activities or the desire of individuals to give of their time and money based on such anecdotes takes cynisim to a level even I find hard to achieve.

I think they may be seen as controversial by some. But the principal behind what they do even if sometimes they may not do it well is something I would always support.

Strangely I think most could do with greater professionalism and in some cases staff who believe more in what they are doing rather than the battery hens in call centres etc bashing out scripted crap. And I know much of that is outsourced....

Like you my opinions have no more value than other people's but my inner whatever often wishes the system was different the state agencies were better the need for charities diminished... but even then at a personal level it's good to look beyond ourselves and remember that but for our good fortune we may be amongst those wh have to rely on what charities do.

And its good to give something of ourselved back to the world we live in.

But then I'm just a dreamer...

Like a number of other people I don't drink much at all normally so being Sober for a month wouldn't normally cause me any problem at all.

We won't be going sober for October as such but it might happen sImply because we don't drink much.

I do think it's a good initiative though to raise money for a good cause, and make people think about how much they drink. Many people I know think nothing of polishing of a bottle or two of wine in an evening, on a very regular basis.
