How close is your 'online character' to your true 'real life' character.

If a forum regular was to meet you would they recognise you from your forum character traits or do you portray a very different 'version' of yourself online?

If there is one character trait you have that you think may be 'lost in translation' online, what would it be?

Yes i think im pretty much the same person if a little more straight talking in reality.

I dont tend to bare my soul on here, i tell people what i want them to know, and am fiercely private

i'm pretty sure my online persona is the same as my reality persona but i guess only those that have met me could answer that

possibly my humour could get lost in translation but then i think its a very simple type of humour so doubt it could be although i am awful for lot of tongue in cheek type of humour so maybe that could be misread occasionaly

Sounds bizarre but my online persona (as you call it) & the one I have when I do meet people is actually the real me.

I find that I'm not who I really am inside when I am with my family or friends. I find that I can be more honest & open about myself with relative strangers.

Does that make sense?

Im more open with my thoughts and feelings on here. Im not so hung up on various issues i have about myself. I certainly couldn't have a conversation about sex toys with my friends without a few eyebrows being raised.

The site has educated me in a fair few things that i wouldn't have been in the 'vanilla' world and through that ive changed my attitude towards myself.

I have said a fair amount of stuff on here that if i were in a room full of non swingers id never dream say.

people always tell me im a lot quieter in real life

i do some times come over on here, the forums and chat rooms as quite a gobby sefl opinionated person but im real life im quite a self concious person who dont meet new people well so tend to be quite, till i get to know them

Its almost like being on here is a character, im more brave here because its not real life

Some of me is the same as I am on the forums,generally I would hope thats mostly the sense of humour

A lot of me is kept private though and I like it that way,I have found that if people want to delve a little deeper they will message away from here so im really not too worried it certain personality traits are lost in translation

It is just a forum and I don't really take any of it too seriously as regards to what people see or think of me,plus I have a job to do here as well so sometimes I have to act accordingly to what admin want which pisses some people off and will obviously affect what they think of me

I tend to be myself anywhere.. Master is working on my habit of being perhaps to blunt at times.. but he believes I built it up as a protection.. basically behave like a cold bitch and people wont mess kinda thing..

I will however always say what I think... but do find that as time goes on I challenge why I think things...

I think I would easily be recognised as myself off the forums..although I do rein myself in a little on things online.. as without it being face to face some things can get misread.. ( as body language and tone of voice can be important)

I would say that I am similar to my online persona. There are some differences. I type as I speak, my speech in real life is littered with words like, oh my god I really love that.

The forum is different in that unlike debate that takes place in here, where you jump in with your _iews at any time, in real life I wouldn't interrupt a conversation I wasn't included in to put my point across If asked though I would give it.

I don't have a problem with conflict either forum based or in real life and I have no problem challenging something I feel is wrong. Only the other week I challenged a man who made highly racist and offensive comments to a group of young men who deemed to get on the public transport before him. I was subjected to a barrel load of abuse and filthy language but if I feel strongly enough ill do it. But I don't challenge everything I hear if it doesn't affect me.

I am a serious thinker and will speak in depth about certain issues which be interpreted as preaching at times. I cannot abide bullying and tend to speak up for the underdog. But I also love laughing and joking and with friends I will joke and laugh all night with tears streaming down my face.

What gets lost in translation online is my sensitivity and friendly nature. Generally in real life I'm well liked, but I do go on somewhat. The length of most of my forum posts indicate I am similar to my real life persona.

Yes i would say so, im no longer a push over and have grown a backbone. Hard to tell if its down to this site or if its because i have other priorities and grown up a bit more

When i was very involved with my friends id be very nicey nicey and afraid to say something if it had a negative part to it.. now i just cut the crap and pretty straight talking, no beating around the bush.

Luckily my friends dont see it as being bitchy, just being straight up and honest. We are still friends so hopefully they are respecting the new found honesty trait alright.

I know what I'm like. Those that matter to me know what I'm like. Those from the internet perceive what I'm like and theres no arguing with others perception so I am what I am to those doing the judging. I can live with that or I wouldn't interact online.

Sox Offline, I'm more out-spoken, more opinionated,,, less-camp, and less inclined to un-challenge issues I silently tolerate on here......

The thing I would hope people might notice about me in person differing to my online persona, would simply be, to see me display all of the above traits amended to an acceptable degree ....

I’m not here to change the world… I’m just here to escape from some of its monotony and enjoy the banter and thought exchange provided by many people who I’ve not met, but whom I very much admire.

I am genuinely very grateful to be too able to indulge myself in their gracious company.

My gregarious, playful nature doesn`t make it onto the forums much....no real reason, I work in an enviroment where banter and black humour is the deriguer...I`m rather good at slapstick, but feel reserved putting that side of myself on here...

I`m more challenging in real life...I don`t think a mud fest achieves much on here, so I keep quiet..mostly...the common good is more important than salving my ego....tho on a point of principle or deceny, that I feel strongly about..I`ll speak up every time..that reflects my true nature...I try and be my own person,a free spirit, who doesn`t have much regard fer status or reputations..authority...

I`d say ..I`m myself...to old in the tooth to play games...and I`m committed to an honest reality of myself and life...having an online persona tis dodgy..muddy waters...

Enough waffle...and waffle it tis..gotta split...funeral to arrange...life eh !!!

I think im quieter on here.

I would say I read about 80% of forum posts in the lounge but reply to about 10%. So I would imagine most people on here dont really no me.

Where as in real life im a lot more outgoing.

People are very different in reality. I was amazed last year after seeing people at chams and seeing them on the forums you wouldn't believe they are the same person.

Don't really think you can compare a large gathering to peeps on post. Meeting peeps at small gatherings would approximate better to the forums, as they are quite personal really. Quite different from a party or large gathering.

I know exactly what you mean. If someone is contrived enough to invent an online persona whats to say they don't put the same effort into contriving a 'live meet' one.

You're still not seeing an insight to the 'real them' unless they are amongst friends and family - who will cover up NOTHING for you if you have made up stuff about yourself. You cant make a conspiracy and your friends will openly mock any porkies you have told strangers, as is the nature of firm foundations made over years of experiencing each other.

If I was out with friends and a stranger criticised me behind my back they would go for their throat to protect me.

If at a meet someone talks about me its odds on they will always find others at the meet to listen to their poison. That is the difference.

because I figure that at a large gathering people are not able to ineract in the same way as on the forums, purely due to the numbers. There may be many people in the lounge but they do not join in all conversations (posts) remember.

Personally, I try to be friendly to everyone at some point but I probably would not have time to do that at a gathering because of the requirement to be fully involved in one conversation whereas on here you have the fluidity to jump easily from one to another.

Just my take tho.

However, I am will to reconsider my position, you may have a point there.

Them people at chams did thay feel you was a diffrent person too ?? i am at a point in my life now i dont care about what others think or say as long as i can be the person i am ...... I am happy ,

Lol i keep myself to myself and tell people on forums very little about me so it would be hard to compare. Besides if you are observing someone you get a truer picture if you are watching them

Can definitely vouch for Jo! She really is as lovely in the flesh as she is on here and defo a 10! We have never played, but we both have a very high regard for her xx

Long Answer…

I am the same on here as I am offline, but people on here only see part of me when I post! I have no patience for those that flout rules just because they don’t think they apply to them. Or those who are unnecessarily harsh on others for no good reason. I do post how I really feel about a subject, but I never get chance to show the “balanced” me! I am also a compassionate person too. I have a great empathy for those who are having a hard time. I have been told I am a “shirt off my back” type of guy. That would not come across on here!

Although I normally post on serious subjects or jokes and even some just general comments, I rarely let my guard down on the ‘Net. OK, sometimes something will get to me and I have to post something that seems out of character. Wishy posted some lyrics from a song and a link. I listened and it warranted a comment, but in the past that has been rare!

Also, I can tell a joke on here but you cannot gauge my humour in cold text! Yes, you can tell what my taste in jokes may be like, but that is only part of it!

I suppose that those I converse with on the site via the email system may have a better insight. I will always write and apologise or explain if I have upset someone and with hindsight, think I was a bit too harsh. Or if I think they may have grabbed the wrong end of the stick. I will always answer others who do the same to me and I have “met” some lovely people when that has happened.

In summery, I am the same, but different!

You say these things a lot about yourself Pearl but I never personally think that way about you. I have never seen you once locked in confrontation on these forums, you seem level headed and gracious. You will put your point across but if someone disagrees then you don't appear to confront them but ignore them. Yet you describe yourself in a different way.

If someone said to me who is really forceful with their opinions and will always come back with a counter argument - I would never say you. You're well liked and have a nice approach, I can't see that your approach does eer upset anyone

No man is an island and people act and present themselves in different ways and depending on who else is around to interact with. This isa not to say they are not genuine, its just about different facets of the same person! A shy, more introvert person may find it easier to engage in banter on forums due to the online anonymity and the fact there are no repercussions (unless you break the forum rules)....and the naturally extrovert may become even more boisterous... I d like to think I am what I am in every situation, I just modify what I say and the choice of language to suit the occasion... Asking my line manager to fuck me might be tempting but would probably have some unwanted side effects...;-)

Some of me comes through in a very strong way, some of it i keep hidden as much as i possibly can but soon as someone gets to know me that bit comes straight through.

I dont have any sides to me on here or in real life. I am somewhat of and adviser and confident to some.

I guess you would have to ask others that know me whether im different or not

i dont think i am, i only think i come over as that because of some of the mail i have received for people i have quoted and given my opinion, ive had a few nasty mail because i have upset people, one guy mailed me once and said he was going to find me in chams and see if i would 'say that' to his face because of comment im made on here

so ive always assumed that even tho its not intentional i do come over as a bit of a loud mouth or maybe some people are just to sensative?

I am very shy and the complete opposite of my on line persona until I get to know you, feel comfortable around you... Then exactly the same as on here. I struggle at socials without a cowpoke of pints before I go in as my nerves take the better of me.

I have zero tolerance for a lack of personal accountability in life and the need to constantly blame everyone else for your shortcomings on and off online...if I fuck up... I admit it and apologise.

I have a great humility in both and a genuine kindness towards people.

And I can be a complete twat.. But I would rather look at my issues first rather than the those of others.

A very interesting question...and thread.

When i first ventured into forums a couple of years ago i assumed what you saw was what you got.It was a big mistake A friend took me to one side (metaphorically) and alerted me to the fact some people have online personas. They can use these to attract, repel,troll,and on sex sites try to get meets.

This is deliberate,what i think is harder to spot is the subconscious adjustments we make. Either in order to fit in, get attention or get meets.

Of course we do this in many offline contexts too, our behaviour with our Mother is probably different to with our swinging mates.Unless you are from norfolk Is this deception...no, simply accepting there are different modes of behaviour for different situations.

So we will all show an edited version of ourselves.

Personally here i am more opinionated, in real life i dont sit round debating with people

However what never changes are my beliefs, and i think it is when people "edit" those ,for whatever reason, that i am wary of them and their intentions.

Hm...interesting. I did actually give this some thought the other day. I post when I feel moved to or think I can entertain. I have not said anything I didn't mean either. I do sometimes refrain from posting as I think sometimes things get a little personal and I remind myself that this is the www and there for all to see. I think I'm true to myself on here yes but its the tip of the iceberg...much lays beneath. I have had some difficult times since joining and have used fab sometimes for distraction and entertainment. So would I be recognised off site...I have no idea. I know that my friends say I'm as mad as a hatter and life and soul but that is when in the company of good friends who I'm relaxed with. Would like to think my humour comes over on here but may get completely lost in translation. Everyone says I'm a softie and I'm pretty sure that that part of me doesn't show online. At the end of the day...it is what it is and I wouldn't take it to heart what people who let's face it don't know me think of me. Confidence has been hard to come by at times so I hang on to it.
