You need to plan ahead, When a social comes up that you would like to attend book a holiday in work and commit yourself to it, Even if work asks you to come in just tell them its a family thing and you have to go

Do something about it then. Like someone said, wait for the next social and book the time off work, you're entitled to holidays. If you keep using work as an excuse and creating obstacles for yourself you'll be on here for another year moaning of no meets.
