OGWT ....

... won't mean a lot to many but for those that loved it, whispering Bob Harris brought us an iconic music programme.

Old Grey Whistle Test began in 1971 (gosh, I'm old)and was the anti-christ of Top of the Pops.

As a celebration Bob Harris will be presenting moments from the show with archive footage, inter_iews with the artists who appeared and it starts this Wednesday at 10pm with an inter_iew with Elton John and music featured is from Curtis Mayfield by David Bowie. I can't wait for the series to begin and get enveloped in nostalgia.

I remember sitting 6 inches from the screen, sound really low and recording it on the mic from my little philips tape recorder because my parents didn't like me watching it. Not that there was anythign wrong its just that they looked like a bunch of weird hippy rocker types to my dad and my mum thought Dawn were more suitable for my delicate ears!

Were you a fan - were your parents 'outraged' by some of the bands? I thought my mothet was going to faint when she saw The Sensational Alex Harvey Band taking the piss out of Delilah by Tom Jones lol.

Would love to hear of some of your favourite moments

I grew up in a hippy commune so parental disapproval was not something i experienced, but TOGWT was practically enforced _iewing! My best memory was my first experience of Bob Marley aged 8 or so i can remember the reggae rythmns just making us all dance!x

it really did cherche, i remember watching and thinking i wanna do that, and here i am! x

My Mum was TOTP and my Dad was OGWT.

So I appreciated both. I can't really remember a lot that was on OGWT but Talking Heads 'Psycho Killer' was a 'moment' for me. Also seeing the Specials was a biggie. Soft Cell also.

I can tell you my best and worst OGWT moments....

Worst,,, it was when my favourite band of the time UFO where scheduled to be on... and for some reason the half-wit producer agreed to swap them out last minute after some American hot-shot agent twisted their arm to showcase a group called Meatloaf instead...,,,,

ffs I was gutted.... nowt against Meatloaf or Meatloaf fans,,, but man,,, I was so upset... I tore-up my afghan coat and sent it out sea on a floating funeral pyre…

Best moments,,,,perhaps, pissing my self laughing watching Dr Hook do a set containing loads of silly banter between the bandmenbers… and also an insane set by “Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias”,,,, that was just mental...

another good moment for me was seeing John Otaway and Wild Willie Barret for the first time, doing Really Free!!

But yep what a fantastic show OGWT was back then... It crtainly help open my eyes to so many great bands and styles of playing,,,and I think its partly responsible for my own attempted musical shinanigans.... so yep... whispering Bob I salute you.... but I ain't ever gonna forgive ya, about the UFO episode though.... Grrrrrrrr

My mum was often shocked by TOTOPs but me Dad loved it and got us all up dancing.

Seeing Wishbone Ash playing Jailbait in 1971 was my musical awakening. I have loved them ever since.

loved the linda ronstadt ogwt in concert special as i had seen her on that tour at b'ham odeon.

other memorable artists i saw on ogwt were litle feat,lyynrd skyynrd,thin lizzy.

those were the days eh?,proper music!.

My dad thought OGWT was about football and my mum thought it was a Patrick Moore stars at night thing...... so they never really got past the programme intro till I gained control of the changing channel knob ( a remote control was a broom-handle in them days)

Huge fan of OGWT, The BBC have put out a series of DVD's showing loads of fantastic clips from the show. My mother nearly flipped when she saw Alex Harvey doing Next

oh yes the SAHB, saw them live a few times and a great theatrical act as well as\ musical,alex harvey lost his brother les who got electrocuted on stage as guitarist with stone the crows.

I like Bach - but I never caught any of his live concerts

I don't often admit to learning anything from my baby bro, but when talking about concerts he has gone to he includes the tribute bands. I'll say you have so not seen AC/DC or Queen live - just imitations and he argues its not about the players its about the songs they made and when we're all kicking up daisies the music will live on.

He has a point but to have lived the tv programme is a bonus - you missed out big style but technology is brilliant that we can relive the memories. Glad you enjoy.

I was in 4th year secondary school when OGWT started.

It marked my transition from schoolboy to youth, from Slade to Led Zepplin. I'd heard Cream, Fleetwood Mac and John Mayal's Blues Breakers on my neighbours stereo, blaring out of his bedroom window as he messed about with his Triumph Bonneville on a Sunday morning, but OGWT bought them to life.

A lot was happening around that time, Jimi and Janis died, The Beatles split, Eric was always in rehab, but the world was getting interesting.

I can remember sitting watching Ted Nugent and thinking, "wish I could do that", lol

Yeah, I remember OGWT, right at the start too.

Yeah lovely jubbley but its that clean pure tone and sustain and richness all in one.

Sorry amateur strummer here might need to go to the bathroom thinking about all that luscious tone mmmmmmmm
