The Power of Opinion

The Forums in any community is always active and full of Opinion. In my opinion this is brilliant. Being able to share what we think and have it acknowledged is something that a lot of people look for.

The problem is though I always see so many people either coming down hard (*ponders*) on the OP or those that enforce their own opinion.

How do you approach it she someone voices an opinion you do not agree with? Do you happily wade in and tell them straight or do you respect their opinion but offer your own perspective.

All opinions welcome :D

We say it from our perspective and allow the other person to consider our opinion. It's up to them if they likeit or not.

I sometimes like to offer an opinion on some threads. I don't expect people to agree with me though. Most opinions are valid, because they see things from a different perspective. I may not agree with it, but getting older and learning more has taught me that you need to respect others opinions, regardless. It's what makes us individuals.

Beyond the shadows.

Internet text is a funny old thing, sometimes something meant in one way can appear or be interpreted in a different way. So you many be thinking your having a debate, but others might think your having an argument.

Personally I like to see things from another perspective and hope people do the same with me. A lot of my posts are born from either comedy or personal experience. What I won't tolerate is someone telling me I'm wrong for feeling the way I have felt for whatever experience I'm sharing. They ain't me, they don't know.

There are times when I can get hot headed, but that's when I'm very passionate about something and I admit I should take a breath at times and not take comments personally.

Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one and some are shitty.

Opinions are fine and will differ between us - that's the beauty of the forum. It's enlightening to learn why people hold their views, however much you disagree.

I'm not here to convert others to my viewpoints at any cost - there's no battle or superiority.

I'll add my bit, however silly things may seem. I don't think that you influence others who disagree with you by blasting forceful arguments at them, it's likely wasted energy.

Let others be happy in their ignorance

I tend to say too much - paid by the word, like Dickens

Good luck to them if they survive

I listen to the opinions of others, and for the most part I respect that opinion, but "That's just my opinion" is not a get out of jail free card, if your opinion is hurtful to others, it stops being just an opinion it becomes a provocative statement intended to cause hurt, and as such should be challenged

There will be differing opinions everywhere, you can't all agree on the same thing. If someone states something I don't agree with, that is of interest to me, then I will offer my view; doesn't mean they're going to agree though. Fortunately, I can accept people have differing views so don't get my knickers in a twist when others aren't in agreement. There's often those that get all defensive of you don't agree with them, luckily I am able to just ignore those ones as they're the ones not worth wasting breath on.

I got online in 1993. I've had my share of "heated debates." I learned that commenting on the Internet is like spitting into the coean and hoping to turn the tide. But I have a big mouth and Mr. and Mrs. Lipgloss didn't raise their child to sit quietly and not speak up, so I found it best to have my say then never return to a thread. That way, I get the last word but anybody who has an issue with my opinion and replies also feels like they got the last word, so everybody's happy. Except them, probably, because they're sitting reloading the thread every few minutes, waiting for me to respond to their stupidity, the stupid opinion-having stupidos. Meanwhile, I'm eating cake, so who's sorry now, eh? EH? (Don't answer that cos you know I won't read it.)

Coincidentally, I just happened to read this quote from W.C. Fields:

"I don't have to attend every argument I'm invited to."

Well a lot depends on whether the OP is making an opinionated statement or inviting people to enter into an exchange of thoughts on the topic they have raised ....

I don't tolerated people trying to tell me what to think, but I welcome a challenge to my own thinking even though I'm always right about everything.....

Most people are too naive to have valid opinions

I just give an opinion, regardless of whether it is in support or opposes the OP. I'm not here to change anyone's minds or tell anyone they're wrong.

Unless they are racist or homophobic, then yes you are wrong.

But even in that case, I'm not going to waste time debating and arguing why I think they're wrong. If that's their opinion, then I'll leave them to it.
