A million would give £30,000 per year at today's low 3% interest rates. A person could live on that once they've paid their mortgage off.

£500,000,000 couldn't be spent in a lifetime without buying a lot of crap nobody needs, so you'd be leaving it for somebody else to spend. Conversely, you could be leaving them penniless because you're a gambler and gamblers bought my bookie grandad a lovely villa in Spain.
