I don't know the story, but it take a wild guess that the reason would be traditionally or culturally accepted within a deeply religious sect?

Not what would be called acceptable behaviour in modern times.

it's not accepted in any mainstream religion..this is a cult with a leader who is using his position to commit assaults...nothing new in that sadly, but the reaction is very extreme..

Forgive me OP, I know very little about Asian cultures and their rituals, the media is responsible for most of what I've heard about honour killings, FGM, disowning family for going against beliefs, and other incidents where punishments are given outside of the law. I thought this may have of a similar nature.

I am aware of good traditions also.

I suggest you read more from the correct sources and talk to your neighbours who may belong to said cultures or religions

Unfortunately the area I live in has very few Asian people.
