It's the festival. And "Ladyboys of Bangkok" (in Fountainbridge) is never a bad idea.

You could spend a day just hanging out on the Royal Mile for all the free entertainment going on. It's a good place to start. You'll be inundated with flyers for shows but best to check the reviews first.

There's loads to do, depends what your interests are I guess. The Royal Yacht is worth a look although it's 30 mins out from the centre and the castle.

My fave place to go is the Gallery of Modern Art but that might not be your sort of thing. There's a free bus goes there from the National Gallery at the bottom of the Mound.

I loved Mary Kings Close, for something away from the festival. Excellent place

Also, the whisky experience near the castle entrance also great if you like Whisky

We're not long back from a fantastic but vanilla weekend in Edinburgh.

Lots of stuff to do, comedy, arts etc it is the Festival.

Military tattoo etc

Free and paid entry comedy shows... although the free show we saw, we put money in the bucket at the end.

Loads of excellent food, look out for places in Stockbridge... a fantastic Thai restaurant tucked away there.

The Botanical gardens are nice, with a fantastic glasshouse.

The Royal Yacht is brilliant, situated by a shopping centre with a food court.

All good things.

You should book your tickets asap if you want to see the Tattoo, especially on a bank holiday weekend.

So, so much to do. Read fringe reviews and book tickets - if it hasn't finished.

Walk up the mound.

Visit suburbs, the beaches.

The Athletic Arms a.k.a. Diggers (being opposite the cemetary Burke & Hare stole bodies from) is a bit of a local institution off the tourist track with a famous ale.

There's a tribute to The Smiths at the Liquid Room in Victoria Street on Saturday and it's the Madchester club night on Sunday.

It was a while ago when I was thereand I never went back, partly because it wasn't what I was really looking for - being the only tgirl there - and it is pricey (to keep out the chancers and riff raff) but you get free drinks with that. It's in an old brothel and the decor was very basic upstairs, with a few furnished rooms downstairs for the swinging part, which I didn't try out. Everybody was friendly. It was my first swingers' club so I don't know how it compares but there's other opinions here:

For "authentic" cuisine, Kebab Mahal on Nicolson Street is said to be "cult," being a spit 'n' sawdust Indian cafe where supposedly the staff of other Indian restaurants go to eat.
