Once again the authorities fucking us over!

I have a gap in my heavy workload to take the family away next week. Off to the travel agent to hand over £5k for a week's holiday. All good so far until passport dates. Mine expires in October (6 weeks after our return) but was told that's not 'valid' as I need at least 6 month remaining. "Don't worry", I was told you can replace your current VALID passport for yet another current passport for a sum of £125!

Fuck you ..... this year's tax return will be a mere £10k net earnings. We both can play that game.

What is it that really pulls your pud?

We don't means test convicted criminals and where applicable charge them for board and lodging for the duration of their incarnation at her majesties hotel

But if you've been a decent citizen all your life and saved a few bob you're means tested and expected pay out all your savings and sell your home to pay the fees for residential care

OP, you don't lose the 6 months, its added on to the new passport. I got mine in August one year and it doesn't expire until October 10 years after.

Its simply a safety net of 6 months incase you are taken ill or hospitalised in an accident while your away, its to save YOU from your passport running out while your stuck in hospital in another country.

As said above, its always been the case that you have to have at least 6 months on it for any country outside Europe. Its nothing new.

Have you checked whether you need a visa? That can take a while depending on the country.

The 6 month thing isn't anything to do with our authorities. It is required by some other, long haul countries.

You need a new passport, just send it off on quick turnaround service and enjoy your break.

Not necessarily. It depends on the destination. In Eurozone it fine as long as it stays current for the duration. Like I've said above we only decided today that we could go.

But it's still a piss-take when said passport is still 'valid' plus I'd need to take a day off to drive a 320 mile round trip to collect it. So realistically it's not just an extra £50, more like an extra £450 if you allow for fuel, time off and the £50!

We only realised today at 3pm that all five of us could possibly book up to go away. We don't have the option of booking months in advance.

Erm ? Due to your lack of preparation? You think 125 is a bit rich every 10 years but happily spend 5000 on a weeks holiday ? Unless there are 8 of you that sounds like quite an expensive holiday

Obvious as we can all see from the accounts UK plc is loaded and just blatantly profiteering

so avoiding your tax along with all the others who do the same will of course have no negative impact upon society

No, I get it. I get that it depends on location, but I still thought it was common knowledge that, generally speaking, 6 months is required on your passport. The eurozone is an exception to the rule here. Anyway, I hope you get it sorted.

My point that you're clearly missing is it doesn't take months to find out that you need valid passports to travel. Never mind. You found out the hard way. I'm not being negative but it's a mistake you've made and I'm failing to see what the issue is with the system that most seem aware of especially when booking a holiday abroad.

I had a death to return to quickly, so paid highly for in person issue, as it was important to me, due to similar entry requirements.

As adults most of us accept that we can't have everything, just because we want it.

Keep track of your official licenses etc, as they do need maintenance

You do realise the 6 month requirement is of the country you are visiting, not ours?

I think the consensus is suck up the oversight, and get it renewed...
