Stolen tools

It's becoming an epidemic, and thieves are targeting tradesmen most of which are self employed.

This is a disgusting cancer, that needs to be cut out.

A guy who does a lot of work for me had his van broken into last week, but they got nothing because he takes his tools out of the van and puts them in his garage, last night they broke into his garage and took tools worth 5 grand.

This type of crime cripples small businesses and had it not been for the fact that I have resources to help the bloke out, he wouldn't be able to earn a living, until the insurance company paid out, and he had replaced his tools.

Please don't buy stolen tools, as tempting as it is to get cheap tools. You are fueling the misery of honest working people.

Criminals don't have a conscience , their morality only extends to a belief in self entitlement....

What seems petty crime to them can have a dramatic effect on the lives on their victims ...

This may sound draconian but I would implement a law that enforces the sequestration of any asset a convicted criminal owns up to double the value of any material objects and incurred lost income suffered by the victim...

This would be paid to the victim ....

The criminal should then have their nuts cut off and sent to jail for ever....

This is flipping annoying and I deal with it a lot.

It’s a massive thing though, tradesmen can’t work so lose money, customers don’t get their jobs completed.

there are 2 or 3 lads regularly walk or cycle round here - loads of neighbours have cctv - they are caught trying car doors - front doors - not doing any damage just chancing their luck - - they are not deterred by the security lights - the cameras - police have it all including clear face pics but can do nothing as no crime comitted - its infuriating - surely they were there with intent to damage/steal - gets me so cross - and then when stuff is taken theyre never caught

We're always getting our vans done

There are readers out there that can mimic lock codes apparently

So we're trying a few different locks to try and reduce its effect

Trouble is, as the vans are leased, the leasing company want extra £'s when they go back 'modified'

Sad thing is, because of what we do, we need 3 sided access so they have 3 doors to go at to get in.

It's time for a few tough lads in the area who are law abiding to have a word with the scrotes

It's time for people to protect there own property as a group and look after there own little patch of street, cul de sac, village etc

These shits know where the easy pickings are and will move on if they accidentally trip over and hit there face in the road 5/6 times

Worth talking to the leasing company or trade forums and get a group together to take there lease from the same company who do allow extra security to be fitted

I'd imagine that the company who agree to let you do it will be snowed under with other businesses going to them

After all it's a great feature when the van is resold after the lease

It's the arrogance that gets me, the absolute no fear of the consequences. A few years back my then housemates and I were sat watching football on the tv in our lounge when we saw two scrotes jump over our back wall and armed with a crow bar they started towards our shed, were just starting on prising the lock off when we got outside. Well five of us, of which I at 6 foot 2 and 16 stone was the smallest, they nonchalantly just turned round and tried to leave. They were teenagers, so tempted as we were to give them a pasting we called the police and kept them there. During this 10 min wait they were just giggling saying 'what the fuck you think the police will do?' . Obviously they knew better than me as when the police arrived they marched them out, made a few soothing comments to us. When we had our follow up call from 'victim of crime' officer, it transpired that no further action was to be taken.

Three days later came home to find shed door open and four mountain bike and a lawnmower nicked.

Yes unfortunately society cant legislate against the criminal intent of those who are not willing to abide by that legislation, therefore a system that provides a sufficiently harsh deterrent seems a potential option albeit with understandable complications ....

I would actually means test certain categories of convicted offenders and where applicable charge those prisoners for the financial cost incurred by society keeping them locked up for the duration of their incarceration

Society shouldn't pay all the costs .....

A site that hubby had the guys on was hit by a group of guys in a Mondeo who broke into a number of the vans that were parked outside on a large grass bank.

The builders waited and knew they would come back.

Once they spotted them they hid and ambushed the car, rolled it onto its roof and smashed every piece of glass in it.

Then they called the police and said that the car had mounted the grass verge and rolled over

Don't buy from places like cash converters as well, I know it isn't tools. I had a bike stolen from my apartment, it turned up a few months later in the local cash converters.

To be fair. Cash converters work closely with the police to try to stop this kind of thing happening, the take every precaution possible to make sure they don't buy stolen goods, after all, if they buy stolen goods and they keep getting recovered, it's not good for their business

I think pawn shops have had to be more stringent now the same as scrap metal places.

I think it's more likely it's sold on through people in pubs asking oil mate want to buy a disc cutter for £30 quid.

The sad thing is if you need a disc cutter you're likely to be trade so you're robbing your fellow worker

An application of SmartWater® to tools etc. provides a forensic path back to the owner.

Property and vehicles, using SmartWater®, can be identified with very much 'in your face' decals and notices.

It's a pretty good deterrent as it's almost impossible to remove after application.

Maintaining a record of serial numbers and tool photographs is also worth 20 minutes of time as it allows you to provide an up-to-date description of what has been stolen.

Breaking into my cars, or property, will find the responsible scrote covered in visible and UV dyes that takes days to remove.

Because they can seems to be the answer, we need to fight back and that includes the rules changing on sentences etc.

New York used to be horrific for crime and then the tough mayor brought in the three strike rule and slowly it turned around.

Just by trying car doors they are committing the crime of vehicle interference or attempt theft from motor vehicle.

These thiefs couldn't give a flying fuck.if they get caught most don't even do time.

Usually get away with it, they know police resources have been cut to a point that it's unlikely that they are going to get caught in the act and if they do then what does it matter,I mean after all we are just a bunch of hairy arsed builder's who probably deserve it anyway as we are all a bunch of crook's ourselves right?

I have been a tradesman for over 30 years and built my toolkit up over this time.

Some of it handed down from my father and grandfather.

Companies will reimburse you if van gets done right?

Mine most definitely won't not a single penny and won't even assist with helping by New tool's or to assist with van insurance which by the way is incredibly difficult to get and expensive.

Most theives don't even bother with trying to be discreet.

Peel and steal seems to be the current favourite.

I try to take my tools out of my van but occasionally forget.

My biggest concern is that by displaying the fact that I have tool's by carrying them in and out of the van I making myself a target.

I am quite a passive chap but I would literally tear someone's head off and shut down their neck if I caught them trying to steal my tools.

Tool theives are just one step up the ladder from rapist's and killer's.

Tool theft is not a victimless crime.

However the sad fact is they could not give a flying fuck.

This is why I always buy a van with a rear window. I've had vans broken in to before. Since I've had vans with rear windows I've not had a problem. They can see there's nothing left in there so pass it by.

On a similar note. If you open top small window for night ventilation, ensure lower one is locked. A neighbour had someone open bottom window by reaching through open top one and was about to climb in. Disturbed, they ran off.
