"Some groups have organised this already, but not everyone may be in a position to transport their waste." From the tv coverage, I'm assuming no-one owns a car.

Maybe i could take it to the tip so the pile doesn't grow..... no its not my problem, fuck it". Seems to be lots on the streets on the telly.

"Nope, can't do it, I tried but I'm just going to have to say it If fetching a van once qualifies someone to make judgments on Birmingham as a whole and it's people, then there is no hope. I pay my council tax, that means that I should get my bins emptied I mean it's not like when I was a kid and the bin men would come all the way up the garden path and carry the bin down on his back, they refuse to empty the wheelie bins if the lid don't shut. Birmingham is no worse or no better than any other major city in the UK, everywhere has its problem areas, I have never been to Plymouth but it would be wrong of me to assume that it's full of d*unk sailors and people who talk like pirates, I keep any ill informed notions to my self" ckearly it werent a bin day! Also it were a lot of the streets not even close the the area i were visiting! I gotta to hand it to Plymouth though its a nice clean city no trouble! Hardly. Enjoy ur tip!

"Youre missing the point. Those people volunteering to take the bins to the tip can be accused of being scabs. Stepping in and doing the bin collectors' job undermines the strike. " To be fair if that were my company i'd just write new contracts no striking. I'd sack them and give new jobs to the people that would appreciate being able to work.

Midpoint salaries for directly employed bin staff: Driver Team Leader - £29,323 Leading hand - £21,962 Loader - £17,072 Not on minimum wage really. Lowest paid is not the highest wage but over minimum. When the strike is over, and UNITE say it could last until Christmas it will cost millions of pounds they don't have to clear it all up.

"The tips are mostly recycling centres now and don't have much facility for household waste, so it would be unfeasible for everyone to take their bin bags there. I agree with previous posters, it's what council tax is paid towards. The real question is how the hell in the year 2017 do we still have strikes lasting this kind of duration. The bin men want to get their arses back to work, from what I,'ve read online they appear to be on good money and its pretty lucrative pay sometimes. There have been job cuts all over the place. XXX" they do have un recycled items skips for these bags. The one near me you drop ur bag off they will go through it! These these tips are all payed and ran by council tax payers

"Bloody 'ell mate, the blody germans made the mess, they can blody well clean it oop an all!" Reminds me of a sketch on the IT crowd when Moss doesn't know what to with the faulty fire extinguisher that caught fire.... he just puts it with the rest of the fire... https://youtu.be/1EBfxjSFAxQ I refuse(!) to feel any sympathy for people worried about the health issues with piled up waste, who continue to contribute to the size of the pile. I've not been to Birmingham since the late sixties ... I was sent there to stay with my Aunt Isabella and my Uncle Alfred ... My Great Aunt Winfred accompanied me performing the role of Governess .... Whilst we were there, we took an excursion for afternoon tea at Rackhams department store.... Clem ...... Clem I kid you not that store was posh .....they even had a department where you could get your tits measured ..... I think, even today, there are still a few nice areas. I saw them on a program about canals. The majority of sutton coldfield is a nice area other then that you will struggle to find any. the closer to the city centre the worse it isI don,t know the area personally but I had to visit solihull around last christmas and into the new year and I found they had a pleasant shopping area complex and plenty of shoppers too in my eyes it looked quaint along with the surrounding suburbs.. " solihull has it's own council, it isn't classed as birmingham.. although solihull itself has good areas and bad areas... places like chelmsely wood are quite poor

"Are members of the public allowed to rock up to the landfill sites? " the local councill brought in a permit system for waste disposal at the tip for largeamounts/regular users just before the strike started so precluding neighbours clubing together to move the rubbish .the bearded brothers who have moved waste already had a permit

"Yeah load your car up with rotting household waste the submit an expense claim to the local council for the disposable bio hazard suit , and the clean up and fumigation of your vehicle not to mention fuel expenses and compensation for lost time..... What's stopping you taking the newest bag to the tip? This attitude is everything that's wrong with post war Britain. Where's the blitz spirit gone in Birmingham? " Start placing your bin bags outside of the council office until they get the message.." Except then you will be prosecuted for Fly tipping. When the London rubbish collectors went on strike in 'The winter of discontent' in 78 everyone just let the rubbish bags pile up too. Few ran to ' the dump' .

Its nice to see society has moved on so far in nearly 40 years.

"Can't the home owners take their bin bags to the local recycling centre? Why should they as it's part of the council tax just dump it on the council yardI,m not sure how it works elsewhere but we have bins that don,t go to recycle and others that do the black bins are unrecycleable so that rubbish has no value except for the Incinerator. Recycling centre is just posh labeling for "the dump" really. " Our dump has lots of different bins and areas for recycling different things. They help you out by pointing you to the correct area or bin. We have to prove we are residents of the borough..

But seeing as now it turns out most residents of Birmingham can't drive, its kind of wasted on them.

"Was suprized to see they don't use wheelie bins and still use plastic bags. Take it urban foxes not a problem. Here in Devon the rubbish be all over the street out the bags, plus the rats of the sky (seagulls) would prob be in on it also " They do have wheelie bins, the bins are just full, so they are having to bag it and put it outside the bins. Well I think its like the op said, a lot of people don't drive and some just won't take it on the on the principal that they paid their council tax and paid for a service and its not been done so why should they do it. My parents live in Brum and would struggle to take the bags and rely on public transport, so we have been down and took the bags to the skips for them because we have a van. Doll x

I have taken some of mine (and a neighbours) to the tip, but unsurprisingly there a huge queue, so obviously many others doing the same. 5 days later my car still smells a bit, which is why I'm hoping not to need to do so again. For the record, I support the strike. I understand that they are not striking for more money but to retain their existing pay and conditions. They work hard at a real speed so why should they stand by and accept changes being imposed? I don't even blame the council - it's the govt enforced cut to wider council budgets.

"Government cuts are to blame but what else can be done when government debt is now more than double what it was 10 years ago? It currently sits just below £1.9 trillion, and rising every day. Just the interest on that amount stands at £90 billion. " We could maybe properly tax their friends and families on the boards of these multinational conglomerates who are allergic to tax. Maybe close a few loop holes and start pursuing the crimes of the rich with the same voracity as we pursue those of the poor. Just for starters.

" The highest earners in this country currently pay 27% of all income tax collected by HMRC, they account for less than 5% of the population. Just how much more do you want them to pay? And if you force them to pay more they'll most likely vote with their feet and move to another country with easier tax rules, taking their wealth and their business for others to benefit from. Wouldn't it be fairer for government to pull it's finger out and actually tackle it's spenditure instead of repeatedly kicking it down the line for the next 5 generation to pay off, or maybe we should just tax more people till they squeak? Either that or the rich will leave the country and it will fall to the average Joe to pay off this huge government mismanagement.

" This hugh government dept most likely contributes to why Interest rates have never prospered in building societys or even banks on ordinary accounts since the late 70,s or 80,s no more than 2 or 3 percent for years now I remember when it was regularly 4 and even 5 percent back then The Isa,s came along and that was the last good thing that did nothing remains now also the greedy bankers not to forget them..
