You are right on the name, and it's apex was Russia setting up nukes in Cuba. But as far as I know all the threats to use nuke weapons and the only ones actually used deliberately are down to the USA. That may be down to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans being between them and potential targets.

Point is when someone says theres gold in them there hills stock up on whisky and shovels, if it's a false claim you still make money.

That's the one.....frightened the hell out of me. I was only 12/13 at the time and the cold war was a very real threat.

I vaguely remember my mother going pale at a news broadcast and when I asked what was wrong she simply replied "we could be facing war".... I naively replied that "it's ok, my grandparents survived war" to which she replied "no, this will be a different kind of war, it's likely no-one will survive" which scared me so much.

I guess that it depends on where the missiles are targeted and whether they actually hit their target or not...also they are extremely likely to hit most of the major airports to disable the countries infrastructure. A lot of airports are fairly rural locations and the blast is far reaching for anything between 20-60 miles so your argument is void I am afraid

Trump is an idiot, but his advisors will let him know the north Korea at best can reach Alaska with a misile, giving the Chinese and the Russians first dibs on shooting it down, and the Americans plenty of time to get ready.

America can't nuke Korea without risk to South Korea and China, but they don't have to, conventional weapons can be dropped from planes refueled in South Korea or Japan, but the expense of the ground war that will follow will piss of the American tax payers who already lost one war there.

If I am right then we can get back to worrying about the collision with alpha century galaxy during in 2 trillion years, if I am wrong we may or may not be dead this time next week

And finally, there is exo-atmospheric, when the warhead is detonated outside the atmosphere, creates a huge Electro-magnetic Pulse that knocks out all electronics, from torches right through to industry, everything shuts down. Good news is that there are no casualties... at least not from the bomb, although planes falling out of the sky, etc will cause fatalities.

We live miles... and miles away from any targets, so we should be ok, and it would need to be a huge warhead to have a blast radius of 60 miles, most missiles carry a number of much smaller warheads, increases the chances of a few hitting targets if there is some form of semi-efficient missile defence system.

It may well be the case that north korea can deliver a nuclear warhead through the Earth’s atmosphere, so that it explodes on its target and I then understand American need to be seen to react, but to make threats seems stupid. Is lot people don't ever seem to want to discuss some of the crimes america inflicted open the people of north Korea in the 50s. Its really not a nice story for the people and mainly the poor, entire villages wiped out by America bombing the dams and causing mass destruction. Nothing military here. Just ordinary people and food resources for the country.

In reality it depends on the route, if the missiles are capable of space flight they can be hard to stop, if the euro fighter can reach them and radar can track them (easier overland) then they can be shot down. But there are way more than 60 targets in the USA plus it would make sense to send more than 1 misile to each key target.

After the fallout you won't be able to eat anything buried in soil because it will be contaminated. Our water supply will also be un-drinkable so we woukd have to access bottled or try to store before the event and ensure it doesn't become contaminated. All easier said than done.

We'd be better off stock piling as much water and dried readily edible foods as possible before and providing the blast and fires don't wipe us out, try to sit out the fallout danger phase (15 days I think)

All the military will be in NBC suits and have masks. Road blocks will be put on all major motorways and large intersections, prob get away with local small road travel, but can't be driving hundreds of miles. Contingency plans state roads are closed by military.. so I would imagine will be the case.

It takes between 80 and 100 days for the radiation to decay.

Rainout and fallout continue to be a risk for a while, but there are lots of variables that affect that.

To survive, just sit it out in a cellar for 100 days, with 200 litres minimum of clean water for each person, plus an absolute minimum of 100,000 calories per person, oh, and a separate room with a chemical toilet in and space for disposal of 30 kgs of solid waste and approx 100 litres of fluid waste per person....starts to mount up when you start planning it out lol

If NK attacks a US military base I think that Trump will see that as a damn sight more than a "threat" and will go positively Armageddon..... I don't need to spell out what will happen then.
