Dog carrying stones

Anyone know if dogs are at high risk of picking up stones and carrying them?

He isn't trying to ite/chew them, just carries them home then dumps them.

He's worn the tips of his fangs, but it's his small incisor teeth inbetween his fangs I'm worried anout.

Anyone else have this problem and will i end up having to take him to the vet with teeth damage?

He's a staffy btw. Stones arw usually about 5 - 7cm across

Not uncommon. My old one used to collect stones Managed to wean him to wood & dog toys eventually, but it took a while. Throwing sticks for them (to get their attraction) isn't good, as if the stick lands awkwardly, can dig into the dogs throat, so any wood needs to be short sections

If they get excited there's a danger they swallow them sometimes. I've heard of dogs having operations to remove small collections of stones.

My sister's Jack Russell used to carry stones in her mouth, she once had one in her mouth and went to swim in the lake, she tried to swallow it and it had lodged in her throat and she drowned. Best keep your eye on this OP.

tried him on a toy or ball that has a squeak..?

don't take it out straight away, get him curious at home to see if he responds to the noise if he does then take it with you and if he goes for a stone then use it to distract and then reward by a treat or give him the toy or ball..

yeah i know there is a downside with the noise..

in telling him no with the stones he may see it as a challenge..

and Terriers are strong willed as you will know so a battle of wills can just get frustrating..

Yes treats and good training is the answer, when he plays with the ball give him a treat and plenty of praise. He will associate the ball with getting a treat and get some decent treats, chopped up sausage is a good one. Put the effort in and the rewards will be great and last thing you want is a stone lodging in his throat.

I use a similar treat system with men LOL

I used plastic bottles to get my Staff off sticks and he used to carry stones too.
