My dad had the craziest car ever - a Morris Marina - the seat covering was made from an industrial plastic byproduct that induced vomit and we will never forget the engine actually dropping out of the car from rust right next to Eros. Thank god they don't make cars like that anymore - then we moved on to a Datsun Sunny which rusted marginally slower - hated driving growing up!

I was just about to mention the vinyl seats in the first two cars I remember my parents owning. One of my earliest memories is gingerly easing myself onto the back seat and getting burnt legs! An absolute nightmare.

My mum had a Hillman Imp followed by a Sunbeam Alpine. A Maxi, 2 Marinas, and then I lose track.

My dad had a Sunbeam Rapier, followed by a succession of Rover SD1's, then an Audi 100. Again, I lose track after that.

Very vague recollections of an Austin 1100 that had holes in the floor. It wasn't a fail on the MOT at the time.

Hull

We had one of the first 5 Moskvich's in Scotland way back in 1969-70. Built in Russia, they were based on a Fiat model, rugged, started in the coldest weather going whilst every other car failed.

We once had a gearbox problem so the AA arrived to tow us to the dealership 10 miles away. Their usual van failed to move it an inch as it was so heavy & it ended up being placed onto a trailer to get it moved.

From then, we had a Company Car- An Austin 1300, the white model with black trim and go faster paint striping plus black vinyl roof. Then a Maxi which rusted soon as look at it!

Dad became unemployed so then had an uncle's Ford Anglia; great in the dry, a death trap in the wet!

Then a Simca, followed by an Alfasud till he sold it to my brother, and gave up driving after that.

Mum had a red mini van, no back seats always fun riding in that, a white mk 1 escort and I remember her having some Polish foreign thing called an fso polanise premier (spelling????) that thing was literally a freaking tank.... I learnt to drive on that, no abs and shocking break distance, no power assisted steering in fact it was a rack and pin job, weighed a ton, bonnet and boot went on for miles and definitely no block changing allowed, Did teach me to actually drive thou and not just point in a general direction lol

We had three vw beetles. Such fond memories of being on the hard shoulder of the m20 with an overheated engine....ahhhhhh childhood memories

Chrysler Avenger with vinyl roof and seats. Loved that car. Looked cool as fuck, even though it was metallic brown. Seats were horrific in the sun if you wore shorts.

Had a distinctive reg that I tried to find to buy a while ago but as the saying goes, once they're gone, they're gone.

I love this thread

My favourite old cars are often the family cars

They were often so shit that they were great

Many fond memories of words like Allegro, Maxi, Princess etc

I ended up doing that too - my mum crashed her Datsun Sunny into a milk float whilst waving at said milkman - so much safer on the jump on - jump off buses and the tube!

it must be around 15 years ago perhaps longer when I recognised one of our old cars the morris traveller by its registration plate from just around the corner from where I live we had that car from around 1965/66 I,m normally hopeless remembering numbers but I never forget that registration some collector might have her now hopefully...

Aye Linwood no more. Used to rally, when I was at college, and a couple of guys had imps.

Car reg numbers are something I always remembered. Like your pals house phone. Your head was a walking phone directory. Nowadays I remember my mums and that's it.
