I go to Gambia regularly, I have a GF there.

It is a poor country. The average wage is about £10 pw..(and a tin of baked beans is about £1.20/£1.50)

When I am there, I go to watch all the football games in one of the bars. There always crowds of young fit good mannered men outside the bars looking in. They cant afford to buy a drink. They have nothing to do of a night..no electricity to read, no TV etc. So they wander the streets stopping at bars, restaurants, discos to watch those people who have money, enjoy themselves.

I was at a bar in Liverpool city center today. They had a karaoke in the bar....it was a really good afternoon...except for the rain, it was belting down.

I went to the doorway to have a smoke. There were 5 young men outside in the rain watching people enjoy themselves. I knew they were immigrants straight away.

They have no disposable income even in this country. I dont pretend that there is an easy answer.......Its very sad and I think it is not going to go away

Not everyone has disposable income, even those who've grown up in this country and worked.

Western goods are always expensive in those places because it's only a particular market that wants it.

The costs for local things to local people is much, much cheaper.

Exposure to just how wealthy others in the world are, is a real problem though.

I also find this reality heartbreaking when travelling to asia. There are solutions but they exist at government level that few of us can influence effectively. It also makes me sick of people in this country that use the term 'poverty' but that's another thread.

Not anyone can. Some people in the world have literally nothing, including no access to a welfare state.
