Would you go to a pub on your own? Not to meet up with friends- literally just totally alone.

If not why not. If you do go on your own what are your experiences of this?

No I went when I was 18, 19, the people in Bournemouth in my experience aren't very nice so it's not worth going out to be miserable

No I went when I was 18, 19, the people in Bournemouth in my experience aren't very nice so it's not worth going out to be miserable"

No I don't, I don't know why I think it's perfectly acceptable for a man to but it doesn't seem right for a woman. I did many years ago but I worked there so always someone I knew to have a drink with x

this! no stigma around it nowadays..if you look around ,there will be plenty of others in there alone..maybe different in less busy areas, but in cities its perfectly normal..

Well to meet people really. People seem to go to the pub for that. I go to shows and gigs etc alone but they aren't really set ups for meeting people. I guess pubs aren't really either.

The question was 'born' from the thread where the guy wanted a woman to go to a club with him. I'm interested in where people will go on their own.

I don't drink so it's a bit pointless me going in at all. Work has meant I've had to go in places and eat alone that doesn't bother me. I usually end up talking to someone, I'm too friendly sometimes. I know their life story before I leave

I used to nip in to the local pub for one maybe two pints when the broadsheet independent newspaper was still available in paper format.

My rationale was it's a bit of a job reading the paper and needs time devoting to it.

Also that anyone reading the independent was unlikely to be viewed as either a loner or an alcoholic simply because the paper was double the size of a tabloid and page 3 contained no nudity whatsoever lol.

I'll quite happily go places alone. Cinema, café, restaurant, pub etc. I'm not a big drinker but sometimes when the weather's nice I'll stop on at my local on the way home from work for a diet and a read of the papers out in the beer garden.

I do as I stay away on business so often have a wander especially if I'm by the coast and try to find a harbour side pub.

Sometimes if I'm rural it stops dead like the American werewolf film pub

Yeah i do (male). Nip to the local for a couple of pints, 90% of the time someone will be there i know so its not too bad but if not put headphones in untill someone i know does come in. Helps having a friendly local though

I'm often in pubs alone, as a frequent traveller and enjoying my own company. It does provide an option for others to communicate with you, perhaps more easily than when you may seem unavailable. It worked last night, with some flirting before chatting

My reasoning.. there are certain people in pubs/clubs that want to fuck you. They won't ask you, but if you're not careful they'll pop a little something in your drink rendering you useless.

Swingers clubs - they outright ask you and when you say no thanks 99% say "thanks anyway, have a great night"

I have never felt comfortable even waking into a pub alone to meet friends inside, let alone going in and drinking on my own. I have no issue with eating in restaurants alone or going to coffee shops alone. In my experience, women alone in pubs tend to be pestered by disrespectful men who seem to think they are just there to be picked up by them. Solo women also seem to be judged by other customers in this way too, and looked down on.

However, single men in pubs is seen as acceptable.

Conversely, I have been to numerous swingers clubs as a single female and felt far more comfortable and safer than in a pub. On my first visit to a swingers club I got chatting to a lovely couple who insisted on driving me home at the end of the night to make sure I was safe rather than getting the taxi that I had planned.

Yes. I thoroughly enjoy it -- a drink and a good book. I also enjoy going with friends too. It's a different experience.

The only time I've been I a pub alone was just over a week ago as I waiting for a time wasting no show off here.

I have her the benifit of the doubt and waited for nearly a hour as she had to travel.She wasn't answering her phone or replying to my texts so after nearly a hour of looking like a idiot sitting there alone I gave up and came home.

She then sent me a message on here saying:sorry she couldn't make it but she got pulled over for speeding and they arrested and she was in the currently police cells.

I replyed:I didn't know you got arrested and thrown in jail for speeding and do they let you take your mobile phone in there now.Thanks for making me look like a loner and a idiot for waiting in the pub alone.

That's when she blocked me

Oh well we all learn our lessons the hard way.

This is the thing!

I can drive half an hour to my 'fave local(ish)' swinging club (therefore unable to drink) - get my kit off (it's a dress-down club), sit at the bar and chat to people all night without anyone thinking anything of it!

I can't, however, walk the 200 yards to my nearest local because I've no-one to go with - even though I'd love to at times just to be with 'the grown ups'!

It's still (in my town at least) perfectly acceptable for a guy to go to a pub alone - but not a woman!

It's unfair but at the moment it's still the way it is!

Hopefully that will change because there are a LOT of lonely single people out there!!

No I haven't been to a pub on my own, even walking in to a pub and ordering a drink while waiting for a Fab meet can be a little awkward until they turn up.

I'll often go to football on my own though, again it's something that's much better when you go with mates but that's not always possible

There are 2 pubs in my village and I never go to either alone. Went into one of them with a friend recently and there were 5 blokes in there all standing or sitting apart , no one chatting and boy was it desperate. We went outside and left them to it.....jeez how depressing

Yes it's true, I see the blokes sitting at the bar alone when I walk past and it's ok. But if I tried it then I wouldn't last long in there before some man decided I needed taking home for a good seeing too. (Well that's what I was told last time I was alone for 5 minutes) but it's a shame, now I can go for a coffee no problem x

I was in a bar in barcelona and someone got stabbed, it might happen less but to say it doesn't happen is bs

And to say bars aren't safe is again rubbish and scaremongering

Going to the pub alone is nothing new for me. Where I grew up I could walk to the local pub and know someone in there. Now because I work away a lot I always walk into a pub on my lonesome

All the time with no problems but I tend not to do rowdy town centre Friday and Saturday nights even with friends.just makes me feel old.

This is the thing!

I can drive half an hour to my 'fave local(ish)' swinging club (therefore unable to drink) - get my kit off (it's a dress-down club), sit at the bar and chat to people all night without anyone thinking anything of it!

I can't, however, walk the 200 yards to my nearest local because I've no-one to go with - even though I'd love to at times just to be with 'the grown ups'!

It's still (in my town at least) perfectly acceptable for a guy to go to a pub alone - but not a woman!

It's unfair but at the moment it's still the way it is!

Hopefully that will change because there are a LOT of lonely single people out there!!

No. It's not something I would ever dream of doing. I've never really been a pub person anyway. I'm also quite anti-social around strangers or around groups of people.

I occasionally do pubs alone in both guy mode and girl. Usually after a day out, but occasionally just fancying something that didn't go from freezer to microwave when I can't be arsed cooking myself.

I tend to amuse myself with my phone while waiting for my food, eat, and then leave shortly thereafter. It's just a slightly more pleasant experience than "drive round to the second window, please." And of course it has alcohol.

To be fair, I often end up dining alone in pubs and restaurants while working away. So it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

I (he) do this at least once a week after work and have done for the past twelve years or so. I pick Mrs N up from work but have to wait 40 minutes; so I pop along to the pub, order chicken tikka, a pint of lime cordial, read the paper and catch up on the sport news. Never found it an issue and enjoy the solitude of it.

In some pubs you can order food and drinks from your table via their apps so you don't have to worry about losing your seat while at the bar (of course, eventually you have to go wee wees),and surely anyone knows how to deal with unwanted attention (or how to welcome wanted attention).

Are we still so stuck in the dark ages that we think a woman alone is either an on the shelf spinster or a tart? Or that a man alone is a sad case or a sexual predator.

If I fancy a glass or two of something bubbly, I'd rather have that accompanied by bright lights and music, watching the world go by than alone in my wretched,cold flat crying into my glass over what went wrong in my life (not that I ever do that).

I've went to watch football before. It's kind of accepted, especially at a certain age that blokes go to the local on their own.

I've never been to a gig on my own, I've not even considered it really. How do others find the experience? It would make sense to go on my own as I've got a more of a metal taste in music that most of my mates don't share.

if I do it's only for one then I move on. Always associate them with socialising and feel like u stick out too much when you're there solo. I'm sure no-one cares but I get an almost asberger anxiety creeping slowly

Gigs I've been on my own because you immerse yourself in a crowd and noones focusing on you.

And indie cinemas too. They have a diff vibe to mainstream cinemas.

Only a handful of times have I been solo to a pub. Would much prefer to sit on the hill watching the world go by (maybe with a bottle), although I do like people watching.

If I've been stuck in the office all day and it's bloody gorgeous outside I'm stopping for a pint on the way home. Alone or not as long as I can indulge in a crisp pint of Peroni I'm fine without company. Usually a few people let on but even if they don't I'm only passing through

I have been to a pub on my own at Waterloo station when my train was delayed for hours, and possibly at the airport.

Whilst I would be completely happy going to a restaurant on my own; pubs are places I go for a natter with friends so it just wouldn't occur to me to go alone.

I often go to pub's on my own at lunchtime,purely for selfish reasons I can get up and go with no explanation's of where I'm going,another reason I'm a bit of a loner like my own company,I like to people watch,I live in a small community,yes you do get slagged off as been a single female but to me these are narrow minded,judgemental people with nothing better to do with their lives

I've been to gigs alone. No-one knows me, I don't care what they think. When the music starts it doesn't matter anyway as the crowd is just one big excited entity.

The local pubs where I live are the sort that if you walk into the pub on your own as a woman, you get leered at and they think you are in the wrong place. Other pubs near to me are not the sort of places where I woulld chat or mingle with anyone.

If i lived in a village and knew the pub landlord and staff of course it wouldnt be a problem to pop in for a drink.

CENTRAL LONDON

Go to the pub all the time, work away a lot and easily get bored of the same 4 walls in a hotel room so go find the local. Almost always find someone to chat to and anyone who brings a dog in to the pub will always have a chat with me whether they like it or not because I really want to say hello to their hound!

Some people think it's strange but it's a million times better than sitting in a hotel room with only the intereweb to keep you company!

Almost always someone there in the same boat as you.

It's no problem in a local type pub you will either find someone you know, or get chatting to other locals. In a city pub it's often full of people on their own usually contract workers who have the choice of pub or hotel room both alone, but more chance of company in the pub.

Strangely enough they are often the friendliest places. I think there is a "no threat" air to a stranger walking in alone. The least friendly are the large pubs designed to cater to large groups.
