"only time i use tinned pineapple is to put round gammon when its cooking to keep it moist. I have never had a sweet tooth and even drained tinned fruit is still far too sickly sweet for me. Some days i can eat a whole pineapple" me and little one have been munching away at it since lunchtime... not much left now.

"i love tinned manderin segments, use them a lot when making flans.. ive never seen a manderin fruit though, or does it have another name?" Mandarins are quite easy to get. My local Morrisons had them yesterday! They do tend to be a little pricier than other similar sized fruits. You mentioned fresh Pineapple. Whether in a fresh or tinned format, do you know it is the best "pick-me-up" tonic for when you have a heavy cold or flu. The natural enzymes in pineapple fight cold and flu germs and also help sooth sore throats. Do you also know how to suss out how fresh a pineapple is on the shelf at your local shop?

It should have a slight fruity aroma, almost like a subtle perfume type smell. The more intense it is, the fresher it is. If there is no odour coming off the fruit, it is still edible, but past its freshness! An alternative way to distinguish a fresh pineapple, is to pull at the pointed leaves at the top of the fruit. If you can easily pull one out, it is fresh. As the fruit gets older, the leaves harden up at the top of the fruit and become more difficult to remove. So, everytime you see people sniffing pineapples, they're not weird! ![]()
