Eating in the office

Morning all,

My PA is an older lady, looks after herself but eats 5-6 pieces of fruit each day and also loads of crunchy nuts. The eating noises are driving me mad and are quite distracting.

Question - would I be unreasonable or harsh to ask her to cut back, or go to another room when she wants to snack?! What's the present day etiquette for such things???

Certainly unreasonable to ask her to cut back. Would you like to be told what and how much to eat?

As for the noise, does she do it on designated breaks? Is it constant through the day? Does it affect her work/ productivity?

Unless she's an oaf who sits there chomping away with her mouth wide open (no offence to open mouth eaters lol) then it sounds like you are probably just hyper sensitive to outside noises. It would be very unreasonable to ask her to stop or go somewhere else.

Is there a company rule against eating in the office?

If you want to apply a rule to her but no one else, well,,,,,good luck with that is all I'm saying.

This. Unless you work in a library.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Stop concerntrating on her munching and start concentrating on your own work.

Alternatively, tell her to stop eating at your own risk but I wouldn't suggest drinking any tea or coffee she makes for you, especially if it resembles a cappuccino!!

Slurp your tea or coffee very close to her and if she comments on it, just let her know how loud she is at chomping.

This bugs me too. Colleague used to eat apples in staff meetings and slurp her tea. No one else seemed bothered, so I assumed it was my problem and made sure not to sit near her. Few weeks later she was sat on her own and I felt bad for not telling her why...

I dont have a problem with people eating .. noisy eaters im usually too busy concentrating on something else but anyone who is tapping their foot or banging something on the desk really irritates me. The other day one young male collegue as tapping his foot, almost banging it against the floor .. i politely asked him to stop as i had a bit of tension headache, with that he got in a huff, walked out of the office and was grumpy the rest of the shift. The man has issues lol

It's funny how each of us is different, the noise wouldn't bother me at all when I'm concentrating on work, but if I was trying to listen to something then it would. So it would bother me more in a staff meeting than when I'm engrossed on the computer. I shut off the auditory channel it appears when I'm concentrating and sometimes I actually need someone to touch me or wave a hand in front of my face to break me out of my work trance.

OP I'm sure you have habits that your co-workers find a little irritating too.

If she is not eating anything particularly smelly (fish, garlic etc) then just grin and bear it.
