"There it stands, with a toss of curls and a flounce of skirts, a Carmen among the cities. It is the last of the Middle Eastern fleshpots, and lives its life with an intensity and a frivolity almost forgotten in our earnest generation."

- Jan (James) Morris on 1950's Beirut.

(I had to Google, I'm not *that* intellectual, I'm just a simple boy )

I'm not sure I follow that logic but that's maybe the point... and the reason for the thread.

Flounces can be useful. A plain (not too frilly) bedskirt, for example, means you can shove a load of stuff under the bed with relative impunity.

I think of the valance as just another thing to catch dust that needs washing, but you are entitled to your opinion.

Many do on here... and even out there. They just call it something manly and insist they are asserting their position.

Its another word for leaving a forum, usually with a parting diatribe or two. There have been some stellar ones on here in the past.

Ah!

My little flounce is about the fixed and closed minds that appear on here on just about every subject now. There is only one view and everyone else is wrong, unless they agree.

There have always been some but I remember threads where discussion happened and people changed positions. There were even threads about people learning something and changing their minds. If that happened now I'm sure someone would be along to call them some derogatory thing for changing their minds.

It's not just here - it seems to be symptom of our current society. I am just saddened that I am seeing it from people I have met or had thought had more open minds.

Yeah that's very true, I have changed my mind on a few occasions or at very least have learnt something new / seen another POV.

"Symptom of current society" ~ social media is such a huge part of our lives & people can be whoever they want be or so it seems.

By that I mean I've seen people act out online in a way I know they wouldn't in reality, the bravado they have from behind the keyboard allowed them the freedom to say whatever they wanted to.

Brexit and more recently the general election were classic examples of this kind of posting.

Ignore them. They are happy in their thoughts. There's thousands ..hundreds ..lots more people that are different and think differently.

I'm just one meaningless blob- this has been greatly reinforced this weekend. I thought it would make me sad but it's been empowering in a way.

Easy i can happily close my mind to any "ghosts/gods/fairies did it" explanations which means i can better concentrate on the actual reality of the problem.
