Hard to think its in the uk and London a combination of mass immigration of low paid workers and a recession will give you what you have got. Couple these elements with a softly, softly policing policy and strong racially driven grievance cultures and what you can expect is what you are seeing. While the rioting is obviously mixed race the root of the problem is in areas with large migrant populations but with copy cat elsewhere. If you take the Irish example the migration took place 400 years ago and the trouble is still there. Now the genie is out of the bottle it will be hard to put back.

I said on the other thread that Toxteth would be next and lo and behold it kicked off there last night too, as well as Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol.

It comes as no surprise that these three cities, as well as London, were the flashpoint for the riots of the 1980s.

What has changed since then?

Two long term governments have risen and fallen since the 80s, one Labour and one Conservative, so the blame can't be blamed at the feet of the politicians. We've had three recessions since the 80s (the stock market crashes of 87, 97 and 2008), so it isn't purely down to the bankers for agitating people to the point of civil disobediance.

Unemployment has also risen and fallen in line with the economics of they 80s, 90s and 2000-10, and has remained pretty constant as an average during that time period.

A generation separates the rioters of the 80s and the rioters on the streets last night. But from the same areas.

So what has changed since then?

They are better organised, that much is certain, as these riots have been co-ordinated via mobile phone and socnets. The police have far less powers than they did in the 80s and a fewer resources to go in and snatch the ringleaders off the streets, but that's not the real reason behind these riots, merely a consequence of it.

Generationally, the ill-educated youth of our inner cities have never experienced mass riots before and I'd wage that the majority of those on the streets looting these past three nights have been there for the excitement of it. I remember the copycat riots in Luton in the 80s and most of those that were there were there to experience it and not neccessarily there because of some sense of social injustice they were feeling. Opportunism plays a key part in these events too as riots are always held in places where goods can be procured once law and order has broken down - you never see a riot in an empty field.

What has changed?

Don't try and justify them. They are criminals...pure and simple.

If they hate this country so much why dont they try somewhere else...Poland for example ....lots of theirs come here so maybe we could export some back in exchange. At least the Poles want to work...unlike our many of our 'own'.

The 'irony' of the Waterstones in Clapham high street being ignored by people desperate for the status symbols of our society where material goods mean all.

Its so sad its nearly funny

Dont see any 'justification' in the post at all, just one persons view on the issue.

Many reasons why people dont, cant or wont work.

These people are oppotunistic scum imho, bent on anarchy.

They are not my 'own' in any way shape or form.

The kids on the streets don't look like Poles, Ukranians etc.. they look like our very own homegrown lowlife underclass scumbags. These will be the kids who usually nick your hubcaps and leave syringes outside school gates. The same lowlife ameobas who'll break into your house to rob you while you sleep to feed some drug habit in the splendour of their filthy bedsits.

These people will never be a credit to society as they'll grow into their 30s and 40s and beyond with the exact same 'if it aint nailed down its mine' attitude they have now. And their kids will do the same - if they stick around long enough to teach them how to make a petrol bomb.

I used to live in Toxteth. I felt safer there at night than in some of the wealthier suberbs of Liverpool!

However ... From what I can see of this 'rioting' it is a comparatively small group -50 was mentioned in one part of London Vs 200 police. The police have to come out in force, they become stretched and these little swines can just run rings round them.

Bring on the rubber bullets and water cannon and more horses. Tough luck if the little robbing twats get hurt.

Sorry to rant but I am really angry about this. There is just no excuse for it, just opportunistic mayhem because nothing happens to them immediately. The police seem to wait until after the event then look at CCTV before making arrests. It needs immediate retribution to make an impact and make them think before they start.

Funny how all the hoodies seem to have brown faces/hands etc

as soon as the thugs out rioting are caught the parents will plead that my son is a nice quite boy!,he would not do this!,you must be mistaken and have got the wrong boy!.

if so why was he out of his bed at that time of night?,and miles away from his home?.

it is just mindless thugs out rioting and robbing!,any lame excuse like no job of work!,poverty and depravation will be used but they are using expensive phones to communicate so they obviously have money?.

MMM i am not so sure on this.

I cannot help feeling the younger generation has things pretty bad of late.

I am going to get shot down in flames, but here goes..

You can imagine this goverment all gathering in a exclucive london club just before coming to power.

"Right on getting into goverment on the back of the worst recession in years we will reduce family credit, scrap EMA close a lot of the job centres etc.

That should help most of our kids..ohh and if they work hard at school study for uni, lets increase the fees by at least double..that should help them"

Then a loan voice at the back says..

"they will riot like they did last time we were in goverment"

"Dont worry we have that covered, lets reduce the police by at least 20%"

Yes some are criminals, but some its a cry for help, it is hard out there.

This is a social issue and i am fed up of hearing we are all in this together buy a bunch of Millionaires.

Sony do indeed make great televisions..lets hope our kids can get the jobs to buy them one day.

Why is it inappropriate if it's true? I've seen quite a few videos and pics, and have to say, I think they'll end up as recruiting material for the BNP and EDL.

I feel truly sorry for those who live in cities and are affected by the riots. I live in the countryside and have 3 licensed shotguns. Send 'em my way, and I'll be only too happy to protect my family. However, as I don't live near a Sony store, I don't think they'll come my way

agreed, its a mixture of all types of scum.

yes if the camera's are pointed at an estate in hackney the majority will be none white as thats the demographic of that area.

speaking to people dealing with this in other parts of the capital its a mixture of white and none white.

totally agree with the comment made to this post, skin colour has no bearing what so ever on what is going on, and i feel the comment screams of the 'r' word, which has no place in any society. for the poster to feel the need to add this i really cant fathom. *picks jaw up off floor*

I just hope that it gets under control and doesn't happen tonight, but have a nasty feeling that this might be the thin end of the wedge.

Imagine if people come out to protect themselves and the rioters start to attack them, the way the policing has been to date, it would be a bloodbath.

This is not a reflection on the Police, I believe they are doing their best, but without real power and sufficient numbers to be really effective.

I got a text from my 20 yr old daughter at 11.30 last night to say that her and her friends had been kicked out of a club/pub(liverpoo) as it was closing because there were riots local. It was quite worrying to say the least, I would have thought they would have closed the doors with the people in them rather than send them outside and expose them to what was going on.

This is what happens when you offer young people no hope of employment and bettering themselves through work. I don't in anyway support the actions of these thugs but successive governments have allowed this powder keg to evolve. Most of these youths involved will have come from communities where few people work and few have hope of ever working.

These riots seem different to ones I've seen in the past,

Past riots have often been focused on authority figures, but this time it appears to be simply a large shopping expedition for many, or wanting to be seen to fit in with the crowd.

Why now? Only suggestion is that everyone is broke. Irony is that riots only increase costs and take resources away from areas.

Off to see what I can read about what those outside the UK are saying about them, always interesting to get a spread of views.

i think the wrong message was sent but the police on sunday in a really simple way..

if you have a riot saturday night, fine take care of that, different issues cused that.....

but then in the same parts if people are being able to loot the shops that were broken into until sunday afternoon thats sends out a signal and a half to a lot of people that you can do it and get away with it....

in a lot of places yesterday looters were going in and out of shops and getting stuff and the police were standing there... so when it came to last night.... if you stretch the police all over london and light fires all over the place.... then the looters can pick targets... clapham junction, ealing, ect ect ect....

the police ended up trying to play catch up and not doing a good job...

what do i think will happen tonight.... nothing... the point had been made... plus i think they may try and bring in some sort of "greater london curfew" over the next couple of days....and tell people if you are on the streets, you do it at your own risk and people will be considered to be trying to break the law....

If you want reasons and excuses just listen to Diane Abbot and Ken Livingston..they have ALL the answers.

They will tell you why car loads of them were tearing from one place to another using their next expensive mobiles to convey where to go next.

They were allowed to get away with it...so they done it some more..and more.

Where was the tear gas where was the rubber bullets etc?..h no..I forgot this would be a breach of their civil rights wouldnt it

And they appealed to parents to check on their kids...the same parents who will be welcoming them home this morning when they walk in with a nice new plasma..

I got a message from a cousin last night to say that he has to stay with a friend as he couldnt get home at all, and he isnt sure if he can get to work tonight. Another friend informed me at 2.30 this morning that it was now hitting bristol. Its about time there was action taken, or we are gonna end up in a worse state of economics than we are already in. These things affect everyone wether directly or indirectly. The poilce need back up as they havnt got the man power to deal with this. Why havnt the water cannons been brought in yet, are they going to wait until nearly every major city is in a riotus stuation. FFS this is 2011, why has it been left to esculate this much?

The riots started simply because they got away with it on Saturday and the word went out there was more fun to be had..then the animals all jumped on the wagon.

The police used the softly softly approach and it backfired..its funny how they can always find the time to whack football supporters over thead but they stand and watch peoples business and shops being looted..

Not the guys on the ground..but those in command centres away from the action.

Anyway...the educated, cowardly middle class trendies and lefties from suburbia have all the answers...best leave it to them eh..

Its so sad its nearly funny"

lol i noticed that, are the book shops the new shelters of the 21st century,"theres a riot coming quick in the bookshop they'll never look in there "

I think its finally time that these lawless shadowy thugs realise that if you push against society and keep poking the bear it will eventually turn around and bite you.

I feel sorry for the police who are fighting this with one hand behind their back the IPCC the human rights act blah blah .If they read the riot act the soft glove can come off and there will be no follow up as all necessary action to clear the streets are allowed and the people doing the clearing are exempt from causing injury and even death.

I think its time society toughened up big style to preserve law and order.

most of the kids out looting and rioting are not old enough to work and do not know what unemployment means!,they are on holiday from school and are still being educated, they still got blackberry phones,computers,x-box and 26 flat screen tv in bedroom so what have they got to complain about?.

it is basically an excuse to run riot, loot shops and throw bricks and bottles at authority,ie the police!.

I think there was no other reason for the riots last night than word of mouth and opportunity

The chance to grab something for nothing,to run absoltue rings around the police,to behave like scum,to have a laugh and egg each other on,to destroy and get away with it

They were mostly kids! laughing and joking as they smashed their way around around our cities last night

Someone said they were ashamed to be English in this thread,I would be ashamed to be a parent if my children were out last night and I did'nt know where they were

These kids had no statements to make, they could barely string a sentence together as they ransacked their way through the highstreets in a pack

The only reason they were doing what they did because they were having a laugh and im disgusted,my 17 yr old son and I watched until the early hrs and he told me he had never seen anything like it in his life,he could'nt think of anything to compare with the scenes last night

Chav culture was his expression

Im disgusted and I felt sorry for the police, there was no way they had the resources to cope with what was happening last night and those kids knew it

Im sorry i have to disagree, kids bored? We has less to entertain us when we where that age , no x boxes, no play stations, no computers or laptops, the list could go on. We made our own entertainment with out breaking any laws. Parents of these children have a lot to answer for as well. I know without any doubt that if i was living in those areas my children wouldnt be out of the house.

Having no money isn't an excuse to terrorise people/ loot shops/ burn cars and buildings and stretch our coppers to the limit ( I can't even begin to think of those coppers family sat at home wondering if they are ok )

That last sentence is inapprpriate.

Why is it inappropriate if it's true? I've seen quite a few videos and pics, and have to say, I think they'll end up as recruiting material for the BNP and EDL. "

.

I guess it's inappropriate because when football hooligans, the EDL, UAF and student protestors riot-nobody mentions that the 'hoodies' have got mainly white faces and white hands because it's irrelevant.

Since the EDL claim to be anti racist if there's any uptake in membership it's likely to be from the kids rioting on our streets who might be attracted to the EDLs previous form with 'rumbles'

As others may have said, this is about mindless and reckless anti social behaviour and opportunistic looting-it's no political statement by black youths, the working class or anybody else. They saw the police didn't respond immediately so thought they'd help themselves to whatever they could.

It's time now to impose curfews and employ water cannons to the streets to maintain order.

Complete disgrace! What is happening around the country has nothing to do with the incident in Tottenham. No excuse for the burning and looting. More people have lost homes and jobs and property.

I can't see how the Govt is going to make 20 percent cuts to Police numbers when they clearly are struggling as it is.

Funny that this hapens with the PM, the Deputy PM, Home Secretary on holiday and the MET without its Chief Commissioner and Deputy due to resignation. The timing just couldn't be invented.

"

That occurred in Birmingham last night. I heard on the news this morning that the local traders community banded together to protect their shops.

I also watched on Sky news last night when some locals in a suburb of London were interviewed; they clearly indicated that they'll be getting together to protect their livilihoods.

So, the underlying feeling is already there that if the Police can't act quickly, local people will.

They are trained specifically for tasks such as these, and have proved in the past in various cities across the world to be one of the best crowd control and quelling disorder tactics available.

Exactly, as on the tv and newspapers I'm looking at the rioters cover every skin tone: but hey, if you only see black it let's us know what YOU are!

well said sassy ...why does it always have to be brought back to colour!!! sickens me in this day and age!!!"

yep got to totally agree here too ,this spans across race ,creed or colour, this is a generation at odds with the rest of society and there is no room for the tired racist chants, its actually diverts from the issues and is offensive to most.

its a total joke 1 women told reporters that’s its happened due to the police been racist but yet i could see black Asian and white people looting its gone way past anything to do with that kid who got shot there just yobs and criminals ppl saying that the kids have no where to go have to say when i was young i had no problem with finding things to do i didn’t go break into shops and set cars alight

give the police the powers to use tear gas and water cannons if the police show that they wont be fucked with then maybe people would think twice

and if the people in the communities where the yobs have come from would work with the police rather than not talk about what they know then half the trouble would not happen

Ok, do me a favour please...let's not bring race into this as it normally kicks off and has to be stopped, and then you won't be able to start another one.

Lets all accept that it is all colours on the streets looting/ burning and terrorising.

Ffs!!! I can't believe I actually read that!!!

Of course, the horses are there!

They are trained specifically for tasks such as these, and have proved in the past in various cities across the world to be one of the best crowd control and quelling disorder tactics available.

"

i'm just wondering about the dogs, do they use them in riot situations cause i know for sure i'd shit myself and run if there was one running towards me.

no idea if they ever use them in that situation though

No, he just kept skirting around the question, in the end he said that they don't have water cannons, so it looks at this point that they are not going to get the ones from Ireland.

A more robust response, keep your kids indoors from Police Commissioner.

Sorry to say, while good words, maybe not enough to scare people.

They should be blunt and state that tear gas and rubber bullets will be used on looters. A lack of a clear and simple message will give a green light for things to continue.

For a number involved I would suggest that getting arrested is of little fear I suspect.

As with others, watcing and searching around, I see nothing to suggest racism is involved, or race is an issue. Just lots of people hoping for a freebie, and dare I suggest parents who are happy when they come home with the stuff.

Great, is it a case, of making sure London is ok, sod the rest of the country?

They are going to arrest more people, great, where are they going to put them, cells are already full in London, and in Birmingham?

they could be dealing with other stuff though maybe

dealing with calls from folks or the paper work back at the station to free up those officers that have got the training maybe

my sister was a special for many years and she had had riot training, she was also a trainer for the police in un-armed combat

although i have to admit it would of been funny to of seen her in a riot situation she is only 4ft 11" they would of thought their luck was in when they saw her coming toward them but trust me once she got to um they would of thought twice, could be a vicious bugger when she wanted, i have the scars to prove it

Then some prick in westminster will start supporting them saying some tosh about EU human rights and the race card will be flashed about too... we'll set aside millions to rebuild whats been lost...

and you know what... if I was a business thats lost good and had property damaged... "I used to live in Toxteth.

That last sentence is inapprpriate.

Why is it inappropriate if it's true? I've seen quite a few videos and pics, and have to say, I think they'll end up as recruiting material for the BNP and EDL.

It's time now to impose curfews and employ water cannons to the streets to maintain order."

Well said!

I've heard on a radio show that many shop-owners/householders are arming themselves with balloons filled with bleach. Not only does it "mark" the thugs for later identification, it can cause burning of the eyes etc which would put off any would-be looter. Aaparently thick bleach is the best, and the city Tesco's has now sold out!

Where I currently live, if any scum-bag tried to get into my property, a MagLite 4 Cell torch will be ready to administer effective justice!

You're going to dazzle them into submission?

Let that be a lesson to the bad guys."

Just posting in response to *hants2some* and *_icelymarked* believing it's only black people involved, take a look at this real-life Katherine Tate caricature on Twitter: @itsBARBZbabes

She's been boasting about her efforts:

"wat ev,, it was free ennit,, didnt get caught so"

Her Twitter page is being overwhelmed at the moment as tons of people take the opportunity to tell her what a complete tw*t she is.

No, I didn't say I thought it was only black people involved, I was merely commenting on the previous poster who had said that was what they had SEEN.

If there is a race/colour/creed/religious involvement, it shouldn't be skirted around and should be addressed, but as usual, fuckwits will say that it's racist, no matter what.

"

I think its finally time that these lawless shadowy thugs realise that if you push against society and keep poking the bear it will eventually turn around and bite you.

I feel sorry for the police who are fighting this with one hand behind their back the IPCC the human rights act blah blah .If they read the riot act the soft glove can come off and there will be no follow up as all necessary action to clear the streets are allowed and the people doing the clearing are exempt from causing injury and even death.

I think its time society toughened up big style to preserve law and order."

tend to agree, there is a piece in the Guardian (not sure if its online) where a Police 'crew' were in A&E waiting for 2 of their guys who had been injured and whilst there were filling out reports which says that they 'may have used force'!!!

How have we got to something like that, oh yes that will be the wooly liberals who have tied their hands behind their backs.

And yes i understand that there should be accountability etc, but FFS during an evening when its all gone rat shit!!

Fuck reading the riot act, just put a message on the 'social' networks(an oxymoron surely) then knock the living daylights out of anyone who kicks off..

Let the old bill give some back...

maybe you should get an education...... the riot act ceased to exist in 1973.

An act that also at one time included the death penalty

Now we really have sod all

The Public Order Act 1986 abolished the common law offences of riot and introduced the statutory offence of riot.

.

..and as was said before would you describe the ethnicity of EDL supporters who riot or football hooligans?

I don't think I've ever seen them described as such..maybe the fuckwits are the ones who only see the colour of someone's skin when it's something they can make political capitol out of?

" Hard to think its in the uk and London a combination of mass immigration of low paid workers and a recession will give you what you have got.

That is a load of tosh!

Don't try and justify them. They are criminals...pure and simple.

If they hate this country so much why dont they try somewhere else...Poland for example ....lots of theirs come here so maybe we could export some back in exchange. At least the Poles want to work...unlike our many of our 'own'."

You'll notice a lot of Turkish Muslims defending their streets against the rioters. They are likely 1st generation immigrants.

The majority of rioters are not immigrants, some of them might be the sons or daughters of immigrants, but the fact of the matter is that the majority of them are clearly home grown types.

i.e. chavs.

"The kids on the streets don't look like Poles, Ukranians etc.. they look like our very own homegrown lowlife underclass scumbags.

Exactly.

The BBC and the Guardian has completely lost the plot on this one. There's such a mismatch between the videos and their reporting it's amazing.

The BBC even referred to them as 'protesters' at one point. wtf?

I can't see too much looting in John O'Groats

The black market for shortbread in tartan tins and wee fluffy toys with ginger beards and bagpipes ain't that lucrative !
