Was out earlier...came home with the first of likely many boxes of picked blackberries... munched good few on way home.

I often gather from nature. Follow the seasons.

Tap sap in spring, nuts, fruit.

So does anyone else make use of nature for free food?

And if so whats your favourite?

seems like a nice little book reprint from 1972.

skimming through an online copy. Its lot of same I see in books I have, but thank you for telling me of it.

I love berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries but not the dreaded gooseberries.

I only wish i didnt have to pay £2.20 for a punnet of 10 raspberries.

Need to start growing my own.

I have a blueberry plant that I plan on planting in the spring.

Always go blackberry picking.

And go hunting for sloes once a year too. Sloe gin is my Christmas tradition.

Put them in your hanging baskets. Crush egg she'll and mix to the soil you use and coffee dust/powder (the stuff that comes out of the machine and into the bin) will also help with pests.

The elevation should help with birds

Glad to see so many of you gather wild food to eat and also so many of you like myself, grow your own and obviously enjoy doing so.

Not sure what's going on with the weather...its like its autumn...my tomatoes are not liking this hurricane wind just now.

I wonder how many of you 'grow your own' people see the seasons have been changing very rapid over last few years and little messed up this year...when was that freezing spell after the buds had opened

Well guess weather different everywhere but do others see such changes?

Yeah...I go foraging quite a lot..raspberries first,cherries,plums,wild herbs nuts but the one I get most pleasure from is HORSERADISH...it takes over a complete garden INSTANTLY... so...planted some next door... He's asked if I can get rid of it for him ???...so..I gather a few roots every year.....thanks....lol...

Noticed some blackberries growing at the end of the garden earlier so will be out picking them over the coming weeks.

We also have 3 cherry trees in the garden but they don't seem to be showing any signs of bearing fruit.

Have the trees ever had fruit?

I got a cheery tree..every year, get masses of cherries, then about June as they start to ripen, the wind blows them off or the birds get them.

This year...covered in them..I got 4. No really 4 cherries, all rest birds took apart from windfall.

Have you ever fed them?

You should feed them..also your a bloke...piss on them..urea full of hydrogen... gives them a kick.

Bit late in season now..but feed them now and few times again...maybe get a crop in next year.

Compared to other veg and fruit..I know little of cherries

But I do have a tree

Haveing to use brown sugar to take the tarte/bitterness out of the fruit before cooking I,ve decided health wise this is one fruit crumble I won,t be enjoying anymore much to my displeasure...

No, they have never fruited but they are probably in need of some TLC. We're doing quite a bit of work on the garden at the moment and hope to get some veg and fruit bushes in next year

Why wait till next year? Loads will grow by the seasons.. you could plant lot of stuff now and be ready for winter harvest. Your quite south you not anyway, so it can't be far off Devon weather and thus seasons generally quite good.

What fruit you putting in this year? Hoping for crops next.

If you got three established cherry trees, round bases, give them good feed, should crop next year.

Yeah growing your own fruit and veg is good but you can't beat the free wild food..its everywhere

Sounds great. Did you leave any for the birds

haha that's what an old lady said to me the other day, I had a bag full and she said " you need to leave some for the birds son" made me laugh as they was everywhere.. I just touched the surface.

Yep love a good crumble.

Well done for your efforts to gather own and make something with your effort. Hats off to all wild food scavengers and gatherers

We have a pretty big garden, so its knowing just where to start, we're doing the fencing and replacing sheds this year, so just a case of getting the basics done this year then more cosmetics and planting next year. We don't plan on moving anytime soon so rush.
