It's a fantastic system to have in the UK - far better than USA television imo. I've not seen all the figures but they will have to pay competitively, otherwise stars bugger off. I'd probably cut Chris Evans down.

I love the BBC but do think It's had its time. Personally to insist that people pay I think is wrong. It's archives should be maintained at a cost paid by the people but going forward id scrap the fee and introduce adverts. Maybe just between programmes rather than half way through.

Let people pay if they want it, I think a lot of people still would and with the advert revenues they would probably be able to produce even more top quality television.

This story gets churned out every year when the Beeb release their financials. *sigh*

You would be horrified if you saw what Sky, BT and even ITV pay. Think of the highest BBC wage and double it.

The BBC is quite unique and the way it's funded allows it to not have to compete directly and can be more experimental in it's programming (in theory, not always the case). Why would we want it to be turned into another commercial TV station like ITV?

Personally I love the BBC .

However if I were them I would set a salary ceiling of say 300k.

The BBC are the king pins of programme making and its presenters, if they wish to move on, let them, there's plenty more fish in the sea the BBC could bring through.

Of course it will never be implemented because the person implementing it would be cutting their own salary to 300k... Big money whispers in everybody's ear not just the presenters

I hate adverts as it is. I look at it as a subscription. I listen to the radio and use the online services. As far as I am concerned it is good value. Certainly better than any of Murdoch's offerings.

They release the salaries every year. This is the first year they have put names to the salaries. (Every year the newspapers put the names on anyway)

Personally I'm not a fan of the BBC. I don't watch their shows, I think the news coverage has gone downhill shockingly in the last 10yrs and tend to get all my news from the internet these days.

I do resent having to pay a licence fee to them when I do not use their service.

On occasion that I do watch TV I tend to watch hallmark, slutty one or SyFi or some other cable channel via my Virgin box, never the BBC, so why am I expected to fund them, then pay an additional charge to the cable operator for the channels I do want?

Personally I would like to see the licence fee abolished and a subscription suffice introduced. Then I can choose who to give my money to. For me, the BBC is not value for money.

Just a thought but if the BBC paid less....would the commercial stations not feel they had to offer too much to take them away?

I think if there was a ceiling in the BBC at may drop the pay across the board and maybe just maybe it would cut the costs to the consumer in the likes of sky.

I don't pay TV licence. Political reasons for that. I do however think that in this day and age many are paying double for much of the beebs output.

Pay your licence fee.

Pay your Sky/ virgin etc bill which includes BBC (that they will be charging Sky etc to host).

So effectively paying twice. IMO

It's about time it was left to stand in its own two feet.

- BBC find & nurture talent.

- Pay talent accordingly.

- National newspapers lose their sht over it.

- Rival channel poaches talent.

- National newspaper then blame BBC.

Rinse and repeat. They can't win.

I think the TV licence is fantastic value, from websites through to much quality programming both on TV and radio. I think it should be treasured instead of being constantly sniped at. Releasing salaries of individuals is pointless, unless ITV and Sky release their's then there is no way to discern if BBC is paying more or less than the going rate. The only people it benefits is the competition, they now know what it might take to prize big stars away.

Support the BBC, it's great.

If that were the case, football wouldn't be creaming it in, the way it is.

Even before BT got into the game, Sky were already paying a fortune because it would bring in the audience and hence the advertising.

Also, don't forget it's a global market with various uk talent like James Corden being snapped up by US broadcatsers.

Yep but they now know they can offer a lot less.

So as I'm thinking it may benefit consumers as they have a starting point now....as opposed to guess work.

I pay the licence fee and i think it offers good value for money. I don't care how much these people earn and i think making it public only gives the BBC's competitors an unfair advantage. I wouldn't want my income made public, people should mind their own business.

I hate commercial television, have you noticed how much longer and more frequent the commercial breaks are becoming?

Pretty soon we'll spend longer watching this drivel than the programmes we actually enjoy.

Micheal Gove

weekly newspaper column, and other articles on request, for The Times. Expected remuneration of £150,000 a year in return for an average of 8 hrs per week. This contract is for twelve months.

£360 per hour!

So assuming an average 40 hour week any member of BBC staff earning less than £725,000 is earning less per hour than Micheal Gove does for his paper round

Jeremy Vine was cut down to size today on this topic,

one caller called him to ground on this, asked him direct if he felt ashamed that the average hard working manual worker worked all hours of the day, working through injuries and basically breaking their back to earn a poor wage whilst he happily pockets £750,000

Jeremy vine was indeed embarrassed about the situation

only thing worth watching on BBC is the news, although that is biased with its reporting in many cases.

TV licence should simply be optional, let the people who use BBC products pay, and those who wish not to use the products boycott payment

I think that is disingenuous, the two things have no relation to one another.

The reason why Vine gets paid so much is that he excels in his field, has honed his craft and has a proven track record. Not many people have the skills and intellect he does in order to do his job. On the other hand, anyone physically capable can do manual labour, yes I'd like it if they were paid more, but the pool of people able to do a job dictates salary. We live in a capitalist society.

Mr Vine has nothing to be embarrassed about.

This is the only Country in the big wide world I see one have to have a licence to watch television, what a joke. I personally think you people need to travel more to see that they are taking you all for fools. The BBC advertise overseas and make profit from doing so like many other networks. Personally I would never pay for it and will never pay for it so they can take me to court. The letters come through the door and they go straight into the bin period, on principle. Actually commercial stations pay "similar but less".

Difference is the BBC is funded by the tax payer and therefore civil servants. For their comparators in the private sector to be on less makes their salaries obscene.

Yeah. I completely wrongly worded and completely misspelled what I ment.

The BBC would be delighted to not have to be dependant on the licence fee. Research shows that on a voluntary subscription model they would be far better off and not be subject to the whims of their political masters.

The other broadcasters would hate it which is why the clamour from them over the licence fee is now so muted.
