Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

"We've probably hit peak stuff" according to Steve Howard, Ikea's Head of Sustainability.

I was listening to You and Yours at my desk today and the phone in was about whether you spend on stuff or experiences.

How do you dispose of your income?

I spend money on experiences, not stuff. Growing up I didn't have a big house and then I moved around too much, so stuff has always been more of a burden. Experiences are memories - priceless.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Experiences, definitely. Most of my stuff is passed down, so I spend my money on concerts, plays, holidays, meals out etc etc. Never been acquisitive really.

One of the reasons given for the decrease on spending on stuff was exactly that. People move around more and don't want or need the stuff and memories are more important.

"As ive gotten older its experiences"

Is that because you have all the stuff you could need?

I'm terribly acquisitive, I think because we were so poor growing up. I'm now getting to the point where I want to divest of the stuff.

Those were experiences. I hope better ones are available to you soon.

Any spare money I have goes on travel and experiences... The only 'stuff' I buy is essentials

Experiences. The stuff I buy is usually for someone else. If I have some spare money I take my grandchildren out.

The world is vast and there is much to see.

I think of my car as a means to experiences.

You are consistent.

I dragged the kids out to the new Design Museum last week. Experiences with the kids eats through my disposable income.

I'm really bad for not spending money. Im not tight fisted or anything im just not one for buying things for the sake of it.

I guess I spend more on experiences. Going places and doing things are much more important than possessions to me.

I spend it on whatever i fancy at the time.

I'm not huge on travelling, I'm a bit lazy for that

My main expenditure was cars and modifying them, I stopped counting the cost a long time ago

It was mainly car audio, got quite a bit silly what I was spending towards the end before I sold everything

I get that, car wise I typically have something that gets me from a to b, so my cars normally come to me cheaply to live out there last couple of years, starting to think its about time I change this approach...

Thinking more about it, I'd say most of my money has gone to paying off student loans of one sort or another. How depressing is that?

So, that's still in the 'experiences' column, right?

as I get older I'm looking forward to the "stuff" that you can't buy.

Recently found my old leavers book from school. It's got a message written in there from Mrsdpt. I think I'll rip it out and have it framed and have it in the bedroom.

I'm 25 so haven't had too much life experience to acquire many things along those lines.

I lost a pebble from Normandy beach on a WW2 trip, that annoyed me, I used to carry it everywhere in my wallet. Just as a reminder of when you open your wallet to spend, remember the sacrifices of the past that allow you to do so.

Definitely not, they're family - I grew mine from a seed but my every spare penny when on him and his mum for years, I went without everything.
