so I read this

http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2017/07/05/1704949114.full.pdf

Abstract

The population extinction pulse we describe here shows, from a quantitative viewpoint, that Earth’s sixth mass extinction is more severe than perceived when looking exclusively at species extinctions. Therefore, humanity needs to address anthropogenic population extirpation and decimation immediately. That conclusion is based on analyses of the numbers and degrees of range contraction (indicative of population shrinkage and/or population extinctions according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature) using a sample of 27,600 vertebrate species, and on a more detailed analysis documenting the population extinctions between 1900 and 2015 in 177 mammal species. We find that the rate of population loss in terrestrial vertebrates is extremely high—even in “species of low concern.” In our sample, comprising nearly half of known vertebrate species, 32% (8,851/27,600) are decreasing; that is, they have decreased in population size and range. In the 177 mammals for which we have detailed data, all have lost 30% or more of their geographic ranges and more than 40% of the species have experienced severe population declines (80% range shrinkage). Our data indicate that beyond global species extinctions Earth is experiencing a huge episode of population declines and extirpations, which will have negative cascading consequences on ecosystem functioning and services vital to sustaining civilization. We describe this as a “biological annihilation” to highlight the current magnitude of Earth’s ongoing sixth major extinction event.

and think what someone off here said to me recently about the very thing and i said perhaps but not in our life time. now quite alarmed as to..has it really become that bad?

Put simply, reduced biodiversity means millions of people face a future where food supplies are more vulnerable to pests and disease, and where fresh water is in irregular or short supply.

er yeah i think that is bad.

"Put simply, reduced biodiversity means millions of people face a future where food supplies are more vulnerable to pests and disease, and where fresh water is in irregular or short supply.

Scientists analyzing species around the world concluded that billions of populations have been lost on a local and regional level, leading to the sixth mass extinction in the Earth's history. Some have termed this reduction of populations a "biological annihilation."

I did think things getting bad around the globe but the rates of extinction...im actually quite shocked..not much hope for future generations...seems time for a douglas adams quote, but its not even funny. the world, mother nature is fucked and its past return now it would seem.

like someone said, we will be dead by then, although a food shortage crisis is already predicted to 2050 so some might not be.

no point in fretting by yourself personally. but, if you can then, do support the people who know what they're doing and trying to avert the crisis or make it easier on us all.

and try to boycott the ones who are contributing towards it.

Its pretty sad that you all shirk responsibility by saying `dont worry I will be dead by then' Shame on you really.

I have children/grandchildren and its this mentality that got us into this pickle in the first place.

We have probably destroyed so much in the last 50 years than we have through the rest of history and its not overpopulation. If we stop throwing things away and reusing, if we turn to eco friendly products and ban anything not eco friendly i.e plastic or come up with another form of resuable material.

We have the technology and yet nothing is being done fast.

The great barrier reef has been declared dead .. so I have read not sure if this is true.

Our planet will carry on but will our grandkids and their offspring.

Really sad that noone appears to be shocked by this.

We dont deserve to live on this planet if this is the way we apparently look after it.

unfortunately, and i think a few things contribute to this, our society now is very 'in the now' and self gratifying.

i think people have always been like this, live for the moment, but now it's on a much more dangerous scale. we are consuming a lot more and it's not because of the population explosion either it's individually.

we're tampering with quite a lot as well, making great advancements scientifically but at a cost.

Seems but a handful care about what's actually happening to the planet here on the forums.

I guess is more interesting posts on "how much battery is left" or "kiss, Snog, fuck" to bother thinking about a serious issue in the here and now.

As someone pointed out. Mother nature will sort it. Yes she is with a mass extinction, happening in the here and now...and it makes me sad that people seem to care little, live in the dark...or present... "I will be dead by then" attitude.

I'm a nobody but if I was a somebody I would make changes, try least cling onto some future for mankind, bit sadly those in power around the globe care little.

I planted two trees very early this morning in countryside. Two small oaks. I do it often and always have, I know it makes little difference in truth, but I've always tried to do a tiny bit in my own way for mother nature and our planet.

I'm a tree hugger

Jonas Salk (inventor of Polio Vaccine) predicted this in the 1970s and published it in his 1981 book "World Population and Human Values: A New Reality,”

No one really gave it much credence. However recently his son Jonathan updated the book.

I became aware of his work in the early 90s and it had a big impact on me.

My guess is that human consciousness collectively and that of those leading our nations, individually, has not evolved to the point where we are actually capable of arresting our own destruction.

We can do our bit, but it feels like pissing in the wind.

Obviously understand are people dreaming of off to Mars to fuck that planet up as well, but I'm not sure if the statement I'm making now is true.....

That they plan on mining moon rock?

That is no helium left on our planet, but moon rock full of it...so are going to mine moon rock?

So go fuck the moon and er well the moon surely effects us. Like our tides etc.

I honestly don't get the massive leaps in tech we making but for all the wrong reasons.

Mother nature needs a reset and sadly I think the human being is part of that reset.

I wonder if the real wealthy in this world think they and their generations will be ok. Surely they can't be that thick

i think we're kind of past that point now, used to be that dense populations spread diseases efficiently enough to kill some of that population off. we know how to stop that now.

but it's likely our pollution will be the cause.

It is a matter of time before, microbes have a very fast evolution cycle. It will only take something that combines the deadliness of Ebola with drug resistance, a long incubation period and an airborne infection mechanism and we can say goodby to at least half the global population. That or someone triggers nuclear war. We are doomed, doomed I tell you . Just hopefully not for a while, no sense to worry about it

Brighton - even Hove!

Possibly the very rich will be able to protect themselves from any disaster, e.g. Underground bunkers, food and water and oxygen supplies and defence mechanisms which means that at some point when they emerge into poverty - given that any socio-economic construct has disappeared, how will they cope?

this is why they are forcing the population into the idoicracy along with poverty.

so they can make a survival model for such times.

lol, not exactly what i meant, although they did used to go on about having one.

they have 7 billion people, a good majority (80% according to oxfam, i think) who are living in stressful and inadequate conditions...much like an apocalyptic world i guess.

and they need to dumb them down to their level to be able to relate to them.

so that is how they make their model, and by using big brother to spy on them all, collecting 'survival' data.

and this is how conspiracy theories are started, by trying to make sense of things that do not make sense.

the land of saints & sinners

From the Precambrian up to the current Holocene era there have been 20 extinction events. With each one accelerating the evolution of life on earth. Where the dominance of a particular species passes from one group to another.

Groups that do survive mass extinctions never fully recover and many go into long term decline.

There is no reason to believe that this cycle of extinctions will not happen to the human species after all we are made up of the same building blocks as most organisms on this planet just arranged in a different order...

This is the true beauty of the universe that it is in a constant state of change and as humans let's marvel at that in the knowledge that we will be replaced...

if ever the super volcano erupted along the atlantic ocean ring of fire, this has happened in the past

you would have around 7 minutes to live due to the toxic chemicals spewed into the atmosphere

when this last happened 94% of all life was killed

so we are doomed if it occurs again

This thread does make me chuckle, homo sapiens, the wise ape!.

We've been around what 200,000 years and were one of billions of species of which 99.9% of have gone extinct... But we're special only us have managed to make the place uninhabitable for everything else that was to come.

I think the selfish ape would have been more appropriate

We are living in the anthropecene this first time in 4 billion years a species is capable of destroying the ecosystem. We are living during the 6th mass extinction event. The Permian mass extinction 200 million years ago wiped out 98% of all life on earth. We are heading in the same direction.Unless we can get off this rock we have a few centuries left .Its inevitable. Our race to the precipice is all but complete.

apologies i paste and copy the following

In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. It has 452 volcanoes (more than 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes). The Ring of Fire is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt.
