We live in different times now but i can remember laughing my ass off at benny hill . Those scetches with him leading a bunch of men in single file ,chasing a leggy young actress in her underwear were so funny . he usually got his face slapped or the frying pan in the face anyway . All that is now considered offensive and sexist . Guilty or not Guilty ?

I enjoyed Benny Hill, along with the carry on films. To be honest i think some things are over anaylised, and ripped to shreds. Some subjects are taken to the extreem and cant been seen for what it really is, A bit of harmless fun.

I totally agree with you . the normal everyday banter and interaction between the sexes is now such a minefield noone dare say anything incase they get carpeted . office life is such a sterile place now i wonder how any work gets done .

i may be inclined to agree if it wasnt for the fact that every week on shows like loose women , they have a guy or guys often , paraded in their briefs and all the panel and studio audience cheer and cream their knickers and its all considered just harmless fun . i dont get why thats ok in this new enlighened era .

Perhaps you should try a mature approach and allow people to voice their own opinion: stated without irony!

I personally found Benny Hill funny. However it wouldn't be appropriate today as humour has "advanced". The same way, for example, most children today wouldn't enjoy programmes like Little House on the Prairie followed by a game of Ludo!

I don't see that the question can be answered simply.

Benny and his comedy style have to be seen in time and place.

I never missed an episode if i could help it. I laughed like hell and loved the chase. It was no worse no better than sea side postcards.

It became popular to look with disdain at this type of comedy as time moved on and politics changed.

I'll defend as far as I can the changes in favour of allowing women into society as human beings rather than sex objects.

I'll defend any woman's desire to be as sexually free as she wants to be without being branded a slut. Which - despite so called 'enlightened' thinking continues to this day. Most of the men here wouldn't use this as a wife pool. Too many sluts about.

If Benny was repeated now I'd watch for old times sake and probably find it very corny and unfunny and not too distasteful.

I'm fairly P.C. and the only sadness i have about P.C is that it is needed to support those that are othewise held down by the bullying weak in society that don't like others having a say.

Witness comments on this thread to those that want to voice an opposing idea.

I don't see the difference between Benny Hill and much of today's comedy. He was more slapstick and that's old hat now but sex pervades all comedy , drama , news everything.

For me the difference now is that women have so many roles in comedy. Whereas in Benny's time if you were pretty you were sexy and chased. If you were an ugly battleaxe there'd be a different part for you - like tax inspector or sommat but you were only there for ridicule in any case. No leading parts for women other than temptress , easy target or battleaxe.

I think he was singled out. It's silly to try and judge it out of it's era.

Without the P.C brigade and their forebears women still would still be _iewed as servants without ability or aspiration.

It's not as far as im concerened.

I hate loose women. Simply loved it at the outset but it got really dumbed down with obnoxious idiots like Colleen. This programe stinks - the women on it stink and what they do for women stinks.

I think ridiculing of men is allowed becuase women are still _iewed as 'weaker' and 'harmless' and therefore the man should be able to take it. It's a bit like all the stupid ads on t.v that ridicule men cooking or cleaning. It's accepted in society too where women grope men and think it's okay simply because they are women. It's punishable in reality but a man has to laugh it off and pretend he doesn't mind even if he finds them repulsive. It would be a very strong man who complained officially. I wish more would.

Thanks Granny and I agree with almost everything you say . its a pity that women in general feel threatened by his type of silly humor rather than seeing it for what it is .

I for one wish more women would stand up and realize the real power that they weald .Us men are poor feeble mortals compared to the girls adn almost every endeavour us men make is in a pursute of impressing you girls . women do rule the world so why arent they thick skinned enough to laugh this stuff off .

i make the same argument when it come to racialism . blacks should also recognize their power and strength and stand up and realize their own potential . so what if bernard manning makes a few off colour jokes (ha , see what i did there ) its no problem if you have that confidence and belief in yourself , no one can spoil that for you .

its interesting to watch what was in its day prime time tv....so it must of been popular as it was fought over by the BBC and ITV....

maybe one day people will look back at Britains got talent...and _iew that as very distasteful and mocking......who knows?

i dont find Benny Hill sexiest ...he was just providing the mass audience what they wanted at the time....i find it interesting to see how _iews have changed.....as with many things in our society.

Millions of strong , powerful , inspiring blacks around and yet people continue to refer to them as in need of saving from Bernard Manning.

But then so were the pythons, Cleese writes very well of the way he cringes now at the fact the woman in their act(name escapes me) was a talented comedienne who they used for tit gags.

However the important fact is he,and the others, developed their outlook,grew, and produced great female comic roles.It is important when we look at the past we remember context. The problem i have with Davidson or Chubby Brown is there act has not changed.There values are not based on different times but genuine prejudice.

Consider les dawson, whose drag act showed a genuine positive _iew of the women who brought him up.

i'll stick to benny ill...as the main subject.

I think he was very clever, and i actually think lots missed the point of his self depricating humour..I mean he was hardly some kind of adonis...but what he lacked in that area, he made up for in having a lighthearted attitude and of course a FUN aspect to sex.

but heyyy...I appreciated the sexy fun as a kid...fuck and i probably had good a few wanks at the scantily clad farce events lol

women do rule the world . yes there may be an overwhelming majority of men as ceo of maajor corporations and live the lifestyle that comes wih it thats true .

However in general their married to women that are younger and very beautiful that are now also living that lifestyle courtesy of the fact that they look good . how often do you hear of a female corporate high flyer married to a male shelf stacker ? women marry upwards in general whereas men marry downwards (in socio economic terms only,before anyone reads the wrong meaning ino that one ). so by my definition women in general clearly weald more power where it matters .

I don't see that the question can be answered simply.

Benny and his comedy style have to be seen in time and place.

I never missed an episode if i could help it. I laughed like hell and loved the chase. It was no worse no better than sea side postcards.

It became popular to look with disdain at this type of comedy as time moved on and politics changed.

I'll defend as far as I can the changes in favour of allowing women into society as human beings rather than sex objects.

I'll defend any woman's desire to be as sexually free as she wants to be without being branded a slut. Which - despite so called 'enlightened' thinking continues to this day. Most of the men here wouldn't use this as a wife pool. Too many sluts about.

If Benny was repeated now I'd watch for old times sake and probably find it very corny and unfunny and not too distasteful.

I'm fairly P.C. and the only sadness i have about P.C is that it is needed to support those that are othewise held down by the bullying weak in society that don't like others having a say.

Witness comments on this thread to those that want to voice an opposing idea.

I don't see the difference between Benny Hill and much of today's comedy. He was more slapstick and that's old hat now but sex pervades all comedy , drama , news everything.

For me the difference now is that women have so many roles in comedy. Whereas in Benny's time if you were pretty you were sexy and chased. If you were an ugly battleaxe there'd be a different part for you - like tax inspector or sommat but you were only there for ridicule in any case. No leading parts for women other than temptress , easy target or battleaxe.

I think he was singled out. It's silly to try and judge it out of it's era.

Without the P.C brigade and their forebears women still would still be _iewed as servants without ability or aspiration. "

I was watching comedy greats or some such programme and it was about benny hill. In person he was a very shy guy.

Did i find him funny, some of it yes some of it no. Nothing to do with sexism though. Same as many found love thy neighbour and rising damp funny(which i still do)

or the old man grace with a leggy blonde always on his knee was funny. Cant remember the name of tha programme with john inman.

Comedy changes, some will always be funny and some will remain where they should be in the past

Benny Hill was sort of funny in its day in a cheap titillation way, but it is extremely dated…. and little more than an excuse for a pervy old fella to show off attractive shapely ladies in underwear. A bit (or a lot) like the traditional seaside cartoon postcards. It suited its era, when golliwogs where on jam jars and “nignog” was seen as a humorous unobjectionable term.... all things best left back in history.

What I found weird about the censorship was that it came long after Benny Hill had enjoyed hours of exposure (pardon the pun) and yes it was of a bygone time but the fact is it was aired in that era and banned in that same era - so it always seemed a little like closing the stable door.

I get a little fed up of people being indignant on my behalf. No television programme, book, forum or article has ever stopped me from achieving anything in life. Anything that has been done in a vicious suppressive way against me has been, in fact carried out by other women throughout my life. No man has ever made me feel inferior or belittled. OK perhaps one or two garage mechanics - but that in itself is a stereotype.

I have seen some in the workplace badly affected and felt powerless but never once did I blame comedy programmes for it. Supression is a practice that is much closer to home and carried out by those who go unchallenged - which is why it thrives.

People (male and female) are belittled and supressed by those in power - either perceived or real power and unless backed up by the majority who are against it - it will stay that way. Who banned Benny Hill? Not the millions who watched it, but a small minority of small minded 'womens libbers' in a position of power and influence at the time. I always believed it was a token gesute to placate those baying for justice throutgh what was a new hot subject at that time - womens rights.
