What do you want to be when you grow up?

A million years ago when I was at school they had very limited choices on careers day. Librarian.. teacher.. dinner lady.. things like that. So I never picked a job I'd like to do.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Is it the job you do now?

Can anyone else of my era remember doing a personality / interests questionnaire at school and as a result you got a huge dot matrix printout of suitable careers based on your answers?

My number 1 profession according to that?

Hat maker!

That went straight in the bin and sadly I never did make a name for myself in the Millinery industry!

lol, hat maker?

we just had to go talk to some guy who asked what we wanted to do then offered us some menial jobs as suggestions. kind of tells you the area i grew up in and what they though of the people in it.

i can't remember what i was offered but do remember i told the guy that i struggled to wake up before 9.30 am and so wanted a job that started well after that. he then went on to suggest i was mentally ill because i struggled to wake up.

yeah. but at least i never got offered hat maker. that's too funny. what skills, traits would you have that even stand out for that?

but, wow i should be so happy to look forward to getting up early to set off to some menial job or there's something wrong with me. he did sound concerned and not bitchy when he said it.

Yeah that's the kind of thing I was thinking of! Pretty sure I got librarian.

Wonder why Dominatrix wasn't on their list.

I wanted to be a vet.

I'm not a vet, instead I am qualified in two entirely different professions and now I realise I should probably have been a doctor..

Ah well, if things had gone differently I wouldn't have Lee or my 3 lovely kids, and I do quite enjoy my work.

Depends how young.

When I was really young, a vet or air hostess.

Once I got my teens it turned to funeral director.

Now I'm older and I know I empathise waaaay to much for that (I would be sobbing with the families/loved ones) I'd like to be a mortician or something similar.

Behind the scenes but still doing something worthwhile.

I (or possibly my parents) have got to the age where I think I should be able to ask them straight about the type of guidance I actually had when I was younger.

Essentially I wanted to know how the hell I ended up doing what I'm doing, and why they didn't stop me.

I asked if there was any difference in the standard of, and I use the phrase advisedly, careers guidance between my generation and theirs.

The conclusion. That careers guidance in schools is hopelessly out of touch with the real world. Essentially luck plays the biggest role, and our continuance to strive for job satisfaction really is a first world, 21st century problem.

Never dreamed I'd be doing what I am now as a youngster but wouldn't swap it for anything else. Even retiring has no appeal as I'll probably carry on doing it until I'm no longer wanted or capable of doing it
