Force more people!!! We should all be fluent Welsh speakers, if it wasn't for that English cunt we would still be a nation of Welsh speakers.

Besides it's our money anyway so what's it to do with anyone else.

did you not know that the first language spoken in the British Isles was welsh?

and if it wasn't for foreign invaders, then it probably still would be

My daughters live in Wales and they go to Welsh medium school. I see absolutely nothing wrong with learning a another language. I feel that if you also speak another language later on life if you have to learn another it helps

Yeah, my daughter is in a Welsh speaking school and is fluent Welsh anyway but knows Spanish from Dora the explorer (fuck knows) like she could actually have conversations with the staff in the hotel when we were in Spain, she has picked Korean up really quickly from kickboxing as well.

I'm English (well my mum was Welsh) and we moved here 5 and a half years ago.. learning welsh is compulsory in all non welsh speaking schools and my son is now fluent in reading, writing and speaking it...I wish he'd teach me but I cant seem to grasp it

I like the idea of offering people an oppertunity to learn the language but to make it compulsory is autocratic lunacy.... or as the Welsh might say "ffolineb awtocratig"

Good job that everything else is so well funded that there's plenty left over for this project.

Good idea.

It's pretty much a small bit of Merseyside in Wales up there. I like Llandudno though, makes a nice day out.

Head down to Bala and it's the complete opposite. Properly Welsh down there.

But they are saying they want it made compulsory not voluntary.

If it was that popular then it would not be in decline.

Is it going to creat jobs? Probably not

As a proud Welshman I struggle with the teaching of Welsh in all Welsh schools. I went to school a mile from the England border and had to suffer 7 years of Welsh lessons in an area where next to no one spoke it, I can now count to 5, ask where the bus or book is and say the bus or book is on the table.

My kids hace and are having to learn Welsh at the cost of learning a more valuable language

I don't want the language to die but I don't think every child should have to learn it

Yeah, between Chester and Llandudno and north of the A55 is essentially the scouse riviera. Once you get west of there, things do improve

There are even a few first language schools that teach all subjects through the medium of Welsh. In some of the more isolated villages, some toddlers learn English as a foreign language in their early years.

"Good job that everything else is so well funded that there's plenty left over for this project.

And that's the real contentious issue.

I was brought up by a family that spoke Welsh. It was just spoken with no thought about its significance or status.

However it does seem that there's a section of Welsh society who want to play the patriotic game of token Welsh language speakers, believing it gives some status in my opinion.

The education system and health service are crumbling, but some eccentric fanatics are pushing millions into advertising the fact you need to learn it.

If it was so important to you, why hasn't your family taught you at home on a daily basis(assuming they havent).

The Welsh language is important to our identity and history but ploughing huge amounts of money into the process is ridiculous. Learn it to use it, not to be uber cool and for gloating purposes?

It should be compulsory in all schools though from nursery age. They won't even notice they're learning it they just do and then they're bilingual. Eventually through the generations everyone will be fluent Welsh speakers again like it should have been.

Prestatyn and Llandudno are holiday resorts, a vast majority of seasonal staff and indeed many hoteliers etc are often from Liverpool, Manchester etc, you would need to go a few miles inland towards Llanrwst or towards Cearnarvon to hear a proper welsh accent, although there are still some Welsh speakers in Llandudno areas.

The joke used to be why have Llandudno got all the scouters and Blackpool all the donkeys? Blackpool got 1st pick.

Twll ddu pob saes.

I don't see the problem.

Yes, a good point was made earlier about families teaching their children if it's important to them.

I was forced to learn French at school, and they are still doing it. Why French? I'm never going there and it has no bearing on my life.

So I can't see the difference tbh. At least in Wales they'll be able to speak Welsh to each other. In England I speak English, not French.

It's just our heritage and we should all speak Welsh and would have all still spoke Welsh if that English geezer hadn't cut the head off Gruffydd ap Llywelyn (the king of Wales) speaking of Welsh was forbidden under English laws, apparently the work of wizardry and witchcraft.

Who says we don't know how to hold a grudge!
