very - this is creeping up on us and too little is being done too late. When the banks go our money will be worthless - and basic commodities like flour, petrol, etc., will go sky high.

Really ?

It's an artificial construct.

No one person or one company needs to suffer.

But we will.

None of it exists in reality. It's all on paper or in computer files ....... it's not important.

But they'll make it important.

They could keep the world turning. Work together. Nothing stops. The sun still shines, rain still rains.....

It could all be done without money and without competition. They could do that.

But they won't....

do a search on the Venus project

The Venus Project presents a bold, new direction for humanity that entails nothing less than the total redesign of our culture. There are many people today who are concerned with the serious problems that face our modern society: unemployment, violent crime, replacement of humans by technology, over-population and a decline in the Earth's ecosystems.

Guess the best thing most of us can do is;

Reduce your debt (Best you can)

Be prepared to be more realistic about your living standards (if your borrowing to pay for it...)

Work out how much it costs you now to live (all your bills, and spends, then you can see better were you can make savings...)

You can't do anything about countries with problems (it's already happened), that's political and up to their electorates to vote for who they think has the solutions, and based on past trends...

Anyway, any one want to stay over and help save heating by keep each other warm

and of course in 30 or 40 years' time the oil will start to run out - cue financial chaos and the total collapse of Western civilisation as we know it. And nobody's doing anything about it. Ad the effects of climate change - mass starvation in Africa and Asia - and where will we be in our isolated little world? Basically we're all doomed - I'm only glad that at my age I won't live long enough to see it. And yes, I realise that this ghastly legacy is all the fault of my generation, but nobody heeded the few warning voices - mass blindness was the preferred option.

One thing you can predict for sure is that predicting the future is, and has always been, a deeply flawed pursuit. Even more so now with the rapid rate of technological change. There are far too many variables to allow us to model the future..ps you're not related to the guy in Dad's Army are you.lol"

Blind optimism. Firstly, evolution takes place over millions of years, not over the (maximum) 100 years that we can have left relying on an oil-based civilisation. Yes, technological change is rapid, indeed exponential - but where is the basic research being done on alternative energy sources to run cars, planes and other mass transport systems?

And by the way - I really, really resent any implication that I might be Scottish!

now I dont really take much notice of all the 'news' that we hear day to day, my feeling is that it is edited to basically make people say OMG! there is FAR too much riding on a total world collapse for any of the major organisations not to have a back up plan, the major corperations who seem to own everything will one day (if they are not already!) run the world, from what we eat to making the decisions in government.

As for alternative energy, I believe that this field is far more advanced than any ordinary person will know, cars are already in full retail production that use alternative energy, so my advise to everybody is plain and simple : Eat drink and be merry, only when this stops does the machine that is the world stop! Oh yeah and keep shagging, who know's the kinetic energy produced by that may one day power your telly

You think so?

Most modern wars are fought over oil reserves, it's a fact that climate change is already affecting many regions of the world, there is already mass starvation in many parts of Asia and Africa....which has increased considerably over the last Twenty Five years.....sounds about right to me.

Hasn't anyone grasped hold of the concept yet that money doesn't disappear. It simply gets redistributed. For every loser in the markets there is a winner, someone makes a profit on a deal because someone else made a loss, it's the way things are done.

How does it affect you and I?

In the short term we pay more for the immediate things we need, in the medium term the prices would have risen anyway and in the long term, well, you should be making plans for your retirement so you have a modicum of a comfortable life, but don't believe for a second that once you retire your worries about security are over because your pension pot is still subject to the same market forces that everyone else's money is subject to.

How do you combat global forces that are continually striving to act against you?

Dilligence. Only a fool would sit back and assume his money is being looked after without actually checking that it is. Get clued up and track what the markets are doing and move your money around accordingly.

For example: Anyone with cash reserves at the moment should be buying gold like it's going out of fashion. I don't mean popping down the high street and bagging a bunch of bling - invest in Gold stocks. Gold has been hitting record highs for some time now and with the instability in the Eurozone gold still has a way to go before it levels out.

I'd also be investing in 'green' stocks and shares as that sector can only grow over the next five years. Even putting PV panels on your roof gaurantees at least 10% return on your money each year for five years at least. Overall, a £12k investment in solar technology today will return c£50k over the next 25 years.

If you are one to take a risk then China, India and Brazil are looking like good investment opportunities at the moment that look set to return a decent profit over 5-10 years. Use an investment fund rather than buying individual shares yourself though as the risk is spread amongst many companies by people who know what they're doing.

The old adage about looking after your money and it will look after you is more pertinent today than ever before. Sitting back and hoping for the best is akin to taking a chunk of your hard earned out into the garden and setting fire to it.

It has been proved Global warming is a lie. Also apparently once went back to an oil well they thought they had drilled dry a few years ago. When they went back they found it has started filling up again. Also in 40 years time we will have renewable energy and lose our reliance on oil.

The next big push is to make us believe the planet is overpopulated. However one professor on hearing this done a computer simulation. He said he got up to a world population of 35 billion and the planet was still able to cope.

No - the world is NOT "cooling down" - gobal temperatures have been increasing steadily for the last 100 years - how much of that is the responsibility of man's activity is unknown, but the vast majority of the climate and geophysical evidence shows that systems are becoming more energised. READ THE SCIENCE, NOT THE MASS MEDIA!

Science is only as good as the day. Makes it a bit hard when they all contradict each other and it could all be proved wrong tomorrow.

Saw an interesting programme once about a vault some island off Greenland I think that has samples of all the seeds of all the worlds plants just in case anything happens and we have to start again.

"Makes it a bit hard when they (the scientists) all contradict each other". Again, this is part of the problem that the media has with science. Professor Steve Jones has just produced a report for the BBC pointing out that the media like to cover science topics by creating artificial controversy, so they give equal time and coverage to "pros" and to "antis". In terms of climate change - as with evolution and the earth being round - there is a vanishingly small number of "antis" - but they are given as much air time (indeeed, if not more) as the "pros". This confuses people, making them think that the scientists "all contradict eachother". Nothing could be further from the truth: evolution, climate change and the Earth not being flat are THE TRUTH.
