But resistance to cefixime – and more rarely to ceftriaxone – has now been reported in more than 50 countries. As a result, WHO issued updated global treatment recommendations in 2016 advising doctors to give 2 antibiotics: ceftriaxone and azithromycin.

Its not all that new! I am in and out of the labs in hospitals between bristol and bath and they have been tracking this for quite a long time now.

The over use of anti biotics for things like sore throtes ect has added to it but not the main cause.

The Gonorea bug can mutate quite fast so quickly becomes resistant to currant treatments.

There are a couple of heavy duty antibiotics in the system but they are kept in reserve for real life threatening stuff as you can live with Gonorea they are not used for that.
