Single Females DIY Help - Tips Required

Right, I hate being a single female who is pretty useless at DIY (choking whilst I am admitting that)

But, I am looking at buying new furniture for my bedroom, however, I have an inset set of shelves that have been faced as if they were a door, so these would need to be removed to allow said item of furniture to be flush against the wall, and which hopefully I may just get away with just doing that.

I also have a cupboard that holds my boiler which I would need to remove the door, to give me space to move things down a bit and replace with some sort of curtain (pretty of course)

What would be the easiest course of action for both jobs? And what tools would I need, or do I just admit defeat at the first hurdle and pay someone without trying first?

With the shelf framing please note that there is also at least 30 years worth of paint to also take into consideration

and putting a curtain up would be easy enough. you could use net curtain wire stretched across (measure the space and get the person selling you the wire to cut it to length as they're hard to cut yourself), or if you enjoy sawing and are good at that an actual curtain pole.

Because the cupboard is on the wall down from the main one, so I have a wasted 14 inch space in order to allow the door to be opened and allow access, so it can easily be removed and hidden by a curtain of some sort so access can still be acquired

Heat gun for starter's I got myself one when I moved in this place,it seemed to be the fashion to just paint over all screws year after year annoyingly. Try and do the job yourself it probably isn't as hard as you think.

Because the cupboard is on the wall down from the main one, so I have a wasted 14 inch space in order to allow the door to be opened and allow access, so it can easily be removed and hidden by a curtain of some sort so access can still be acquired "

oh right, yes i didn't think of the door being open as taking up space.

i hired a heat gun a couple of years ago, and it was really good..i've also used some DIY online sites for help..plumbed in a washing machine at xmas! i think you will have an advantage over men using them as you will probably actually follow the advice! good luck!

That's what she said wasn't it? Removing doors. How the bloody hell were we supposed to guess they had 30 years of paint on them? We were only told that fact - that crucial fact - later!!!!

Apply paint stripper with a brush leave it for 5_10 mins then use thinners and wire wool and ull find it takes all the paint off

If there's 30years worth of paint then hey probably arent glued, find the screw holes and scrape them out with a flathead then see where you are. If anything is glued then you're not getting it out without a bit of mess (that goes for moving shelves too) so hope lol.

It's not the end of the world either way though, you could always fill in any holes made easy enough

The secret to this DIY shit is just have a go and have google to hand

I would buy some sand paper too. Sometimes, when you unscrew stuff that has a lot of layers of paint, you get lumps of paint left around the holes. I like to sand them off.

Invest in a decent screwdriver set, that has different heads on them.

My most used screwdriver is a crosshead.

If the paint is old you may find the bottom layers have lead in them. You have to be careful removing lead paint and wear a suitable mask.

A professional should test the paint, if it needs to be removed, and have the necessary tools and safety equipment.

foxy, ascertain how the shelving is fixed..is it glue?, is it screws?...look all round the edges to find out..

glue, youll just need leverage. screws, youll need a flat head (for straight across the top indent) or a Philips (cross on the top indent) youll need one to take hinges off, so you can remove the door anyway...

some shelving is held to the wall by small metal brackets at top and/or sides (dresser types and hanging shelving.)

wish i was nearer..im pretty practical cant you up load a pic of the shelving, with you in the picture..id have a better clue....

worst comes to worst you use leverage and get a tub of polyfiller

you'll need a hammer a slotted screwdriver to knock paint out of slot on screws then undo screws remove doors but surely the frame of unit gets in the way of what youre trying to do to ?

I have a tension rod for my curtain covering a doorway. eBay is good for that & pretty nets actually.

Definitely invest in a decent tool kit, don't go for the cutesy girlie ones as they won't last 5 minutes, I have a full halfords one & it's great.

"Right, I hate being a single female who is pretty useless at DIY (choking whilst I am admitting that)

But, I am looking at buying new furniture for my bedroom, however, I have an inset set of shelves that have been faced as if they were a door, so these would need to be removed to allow said item of furniture to be flush against the wall, and which hopefully I may just get away with just doing that.

I also have a cupboard that holds my boiler which I would need to remove the door, to give me space to move things down a bit and replace with some sort of curtain (pretty of course)

What would be the easiest course of action for both jobs? And what tools would I need, or do I just admit defeat at the first hurdle and pay someone without trying first?

With the shelf framing please note that there is also at least 30 years worth of paint to also take into consideration "
the shelves will be fixed to the wall probably through the batten that the shelf sits on if its a slotted screw use hammer and flat head screw driver to knock paint out of slot bash screws gently in with screwdriver inserted in slot this will loosen grip and make them easier to undo ( anti clockwise ) to remove screws

foxy, ascertain how the shelving is fixed..is it glue?, is it screws?...look all round the edges to find out..

glue, youll just need leverage. screws, youll need a flat head (for straight across the top indent) or a Philips (cross on the top indent) youll need one to take hinges off, so you can remove the door anyway...

some shelving is held to the wall by small metal brackets at top and/or sides (dresser types and hanging shelving.)

wish i was nearer..im pretty practical cant you up load a pic of the shelving, with you in the picture..id have a better clue....

worst comes to worst you use leverage and get a tub of polyfiller

Or get a Man in to do a proper job

After doing 3 Refurbs - Best way on your 2 Jobs.

1. Dust sheets (lots of crap ganna come out (easy clean up))

2. Hand held Drill (light work) wickes 20 quid will take out the shelves. then fill holes with filler . sand off lightly.

3. Hook hammer and chisel to ease away the door (easy enough) then again use filler to plug the holes.

4. rail from wickes comes with fittings two tapper screws each end. Usually telescopic rails or can cut with small jigsaw to size.

Sand down lighty after not with heater and just prime/stain .. job done in 1 day max + mess removed by rolling up dust sheet and dumping it.

You may find that the "frame for the door on the sheving has been nailed directly onto the shelves then the edges sealed and painted , as suggested by others a hammer may be an item to consider , hammering on frame from inside to out if the frame starts to move your on the right track, i would remove door of frame first

The shelves themselves are probably sitting on wooden brackets , screws or nails will be holding the shelves on if they are not loose on bracket, these maybe screwed or nailed from bottom or top of shelf but again may have been painted over , then the wooden side brackets themselves will be screwd into walls as well
