What's one thing you remember doing as a child with you wish you could do again? Even one memory with your friends/family that you wish you could do over.

Climbing trees was always fun but I still do this, I still play football too.

Just off the top of my head, joining a football academy aged 11/12. Learning skills playing in 5aside tournaments, competing in penalty shoot outs. I loved every moment of it. My photo with my medals show me with such a proud smile. That's a great memory.

Please share your own?

I miss the not sorting about growing up stuff. Like bills and appointments and insurances etc.

Has to be building a tree house from scratch with my brother. Dad allowed us to use his saw, hammer and nails! Was so proud of our achievement, looking back it was definitely a death trap!

And no way would I let my kids do that now, I like their fingers and toes where they belong!!!!!

the freedom to roam that kids dont have nowadays - we used to all take our bikes to the park for the day - dump them in a heap and leave them complete with butties - juice - ice cream money and sometimes house keys and go off for a few hours - come back and no one would have touched them -

Miss my Star Wars figures and toys though.

I'd kept hold of them too - most of my vehicles were still in their original boxes.

Unfortunately, I was unable to retreive them when I splitt with the Psycopath

. Would you not let them. If it did you no harm? I hate it when I hear parents not let there kids climb a tree or make a bow and arrow.

I bet you used an old back door for a stable wall on your tree house!

I suppose one of the things I miss most though would be Sunday drives with the family. Four of us alternatively bickering, singing, playing spot the pony or counting cars of a specific colour in the back of the Ford Escort, with Mum and Dad up front battling with road maps and shouting 'if you lot don't pipe down back there we're turning back and going home', and a million sandwiches, flasks of tea, bottles of pop and bags of crisps in the boot...

I know. I play football all day on weekends sometimes. 10 half time 20 up. Why don't premiere teams try an exhibition match with those rules. ?

Building dams in a stream that ran into the River Dee on a caravan park in North Wales is my most vivid and favourite memory of this sort. We spent many holidays at this site and continued the dam building each time. Eventually we'd built big enough dams to create a natural swimming pool that we could dive into.

Unfortunately the brook has dried up now. Such simplistic times. X

I was in the sea cadets for many years. Sailing, rowing, going away for weeks without parents, the freedom and independence. I went away for a week on an old pirate ship type boat, which we had to run. I was about 13, such amazing memories and skills I learnt

Being trusted at the age of 10 to climb up onto the Junior School roof to retrieve footballs and tennis balls that had accidentally been kicked or thrown up there during playtime and dinner time. No ladders, just up onto a bin, then a wall then up onto a ledge and a bit more climbing.... Victorian school buildings were designed so well

The Headmaster allowed about half a dozen of us to go up there.....

Risk Assessment? Health and Safety?

Yeah it hurts if you fall...what 10 yr old in the mid 70s hadn't already learned that lesson.

Remember life being much simpler then every day a new adventure when even a trip to the beach was a rare but major event when rugby mates cycling wandering in the local woods or a day playing in the sun were special times...

But sometimes going back to the past...well it belongs in the past..

Doesn't mean we have to grow up..

That tingle of excitement at new achievements a new day new opportunities new friends or even lovers never changes unless we forget just how great every single day can be....

Remember your past fondly it's part of what made us.... but the future maybe that's the real adventure...

So many things - the simple things like going round a friends house to see if they were 'coming out to play'

School holidays spent having 'adventures' down the park, or playing 2-a-side football for what seemed like hours.

Being in the Sea Cadets and the opportunities that afforded including courses on Naval bases, sailing on their square rigged sailing ship that meant you had to climb the mast at all hours and so much more.

There was a dirt track ran down the end of our street and when it rained, a stream would form. We'd create a dam then shape the dirt into a racecourse, then we'd choose sticks, break the dam and watch the race.

Kick the can.

We'd go up the gold course and catch grasshoppers, then race them.

Making go-karts.

We'd go round the estate with the binmen and find loads of great stuff: boxes of comics, dirty mags and bottles to take back and get the deposit on. It seemed like the greatest job on earth.

Opposite where I lived as a big old house n a huge garden. The old man of the house knew my parents well so he used to let me play in his garden. He was lame n used to sit in his house so I'd pretend I was an explorer n id creep round the garden watvhing the house for locals with spears who might catch me n torture me. The garden had everything fruit trees runner beans n peas even a stream and wild bits for den making.

When I go back there now I'm always said cos when he died the land was sold to builders who built six big houses on the land.

Just miss all the simple pleasures of having no care in the world and just doing whatever. Loved going to school and then just silly things like watching tv when you got home then heading out for a kick about or game of bulldog. But I can tell you I do not miss having to bath in a inch of water that was pretty much cold and having to share it with at least 3 of your siblings.

I miss being sat in the farmers field with my friends. During summer he'd let the grass grow really long so we'd wade through to the middle and make a flat area then sit, talk and chill.

Some very happy summer days spent there.

Also going for very long bike rides down the country lane. We'd be out all day with no mobiles but our parents knew we'd be back when we said we would.

yep that about sums me up to! Add playing football after school until it was dark and riding my bike in endless loops around my little village (and less of the sandcastle bit unless on holiday!).

We used to walk through the woods for hours, to the waterfalls, and build countless dens. No worries about nutters abducting us in those days. Or so it seemed!

A box at end of your bed

I have lots of moments from growing up.

Younger years 6/10 going to my grandparents the food my grandma cooked going fishing with my grandfather. The days when to whole family came to there house.

11-16 the hobbies I did with my father RC planes, cars, holidays with my parents.

16-21 My first moped a Yamaha FS1E to the bigger motorcycles I got after that. The freedom and fun that came with having my own transport.

Yep, then probably just stay in and communicate over the tech.

As for me, my childhood is all about knocking about with my brother. We'd build dams in the gutter whenever someone down the street washed their car. Building ramps out of bricks and pallet wood. The usual long hot summers out all day on our bikes climbing trees, football on the common, finishing for stickle backs and finding terrapins. We were a pair of mischievous toe-rags though. We'd also do things like wreck havoc on building sites and factories. We had a cellar that Dad used as a workshop and kept his tools and he'd let us make wooden swords (there's that pallet wood again-my dad had tonnes of it!) We'd then spend the afternoon

Fighting each other to the death of the swords, whosever broke first lost.

Those days for me personally were hell as I left home at age 11but my pony was my escape.

Today's children are bombarded by what the media tell them they should be doing.

The days of children being innocent are long gone.

Go to any high or senior school and you would see what I mean.

13 year olds with the trendy handbags and a face full of make up.

I call them kids street wise. I think some parents keep their kids in a bubble so much, the kids aren't able to discover dangers and learn. When we were young, we did things that put us in danger, (damn thank goodness we didn't have you tube back then) but we survived aren't we?

I did that 5 years ago with my 10 & 12 year old at the time. Was really dizzy when I stopped, don't recall that as a child, but it was a laugh ... Trying to stand up and falling over again with what appeared to be broken legs ...

The say growing old is unstoppable, but growing up.is optional.

I decided to learn to inline roller skate for my 50th. Never did it before, ever. Never skated as a child.

A few weekends ago, at the South Coast roll I skated 12 laps of Goodwood motor circuit, 29 miles, with no ill effects. ... Not even legs aching.

Don't grow up, skate ... Roller disco, street skate, whatever. Far more fun than the task focussed gym. ...

When i was in my early 20's i went on a Norwegian Ffjords cruise holiday with my nan, grampy, mum and step-dad.

I spent most of the holiday missing my then boyfriend and gazing out wistfully wishing i was with him.

Instead i wish i could go back and appreciate that (fun) time with my family a little but more than i did, as apart from my mum, they're all gone.

I've enjoyed reading them all. Great memories are silk tonne made, but I think as kids they were much more because most things still felt new.

I got talking last night, remembering when you used to call around to a friends house , knock in and finding he wasn't in. You can't do that now.

. Even kids today would call first or text.

Ours wouldn't as we don't agree with children having mobile phones.

But agree there's no way they're going over the park...those days are gone.

Unless you are one of the ferrule kids and nothing ever seems to happen to them.

Exactly that, we aren't liked as we won't conform, never have, never will.

We are strong individuals and our kids will grow up the same way.

Today's sheep will struggle to cope once they finish school as their frantic lives will suddenly stop.

Kids need to just be kids every now and then, what's wrong in that??

When it was a snow day and school was closed, I took the mattreses from me and my brother's bedroom and use them to turn the stairs into a slide. It was awesome lol.

I sure miss those days of going to the corner shop on the weekends to get some sweets and a drink.

I also miss having that high level of excitement kids have when it's either going on holiday or getting ready for Christmas. These things are still exciting for adults but the excitement levels don't seem as high as it is for kids.

Building go-karts and crashing them.

Summer holidays where we left the house after breakfast, called for our mates, and turned up back at home as the sun went down, having spent the day making dens, building fires, and playing in the local river.

Learning to drive a tractor at 13 on a local farm when the farmer saw us wandering across his fields during haymaking season, and ending up working for a few weeks hauling bales every summer.

Proper farmers lunches in the fields when the matriarch would drive up in the landrover, bringing blankets, thermos' of tea, cakes, sandwiches, pies and home-made lemonade, all sitting in the shade of the hay trailer.

Going house to house collecting pop bottles to take back for the 10p deposit.

Going round the village collecting old sofas, packing crates, pallets and anything else that would burn to build the bonfire for Guy Fawkes.

took my kids when they were little back to that 'hill' i thought was so steep and long - gentle incline was more the truth - but - they had as much fun as i had rolling

I remember that when I was a kid, there was this big grassy area behind my old house where there was a few climbing frames, a couple of swings and a slide. I use to tell my parents I would be going on the "swings and slides".

All of these are long gone now. Whenever I go to Farnworth, I always visit the street I used to live in and remember where things used to be when I was a kid.

Great thread MB! I've been reminiscing all weekend and enjoying others thoughts on golden years.

I'm sure I remember collecting frog spawn in a jam jar and waiting for them to grow into tadpoles/froglett's before realising them back in the local pond. Think it was for a school project or a beaver badge????

Like bees, doesn't seem to be as many frogs or frogspawn about these days.

I still feel excited finding bugs and creatures in the garden. I still climb trees and builds dens. I still draw and colour in (often with crayons!).

I probably watch more cartoons and play more games than I ever did as a child.

I still play with toys. My monsters have more Brio and Lego than is normal and we build elaborate tracks and structures that span the house.

I think I've held on to my childish wonder at the world. I still think rainbows are incredible (such colour splashed across a dreary backdrop!), the northern lights astound me every time I see them, the natural beauty of our walks often causes me to pause to take it all in.

I think what I would most like to regain is some of the whimsy of childhood. I still look up at the clouds and spot different shapes but I never dream of riding one anymore. The loft still may potentially contain bats but I know there is no secret race of goblins dwelling up there. I miss the lack of rationality, the sheer untamed potential of things.

So, if there was one thing I'd wish I could do again... I'd like to see the world without limits, without the walls that science and logic have built.

Totally agree. My sons 13 and I know full well him and his mates probably go in farmers fields and get chased, explore abandoned buildings, climb places they shouldn't. I also think back and remember myself as a child and the crazy shit we used to get up to which made me street wise and learnt me about life in general. I just tell him not to tell me what they get up to

Fatherhood was/is great you get to play like a kid with the excuse your 'parenting' as well as discovering cartoons you wished they had we we were young. If it wasn't for being a parent I'd never had discovered Ben10, Chowder and the misadventures of flapjack

I had a shit and very unhappy childhood so any happy thoughts are about things I did for myself. I did sport as it meant longer at school and less time at home. I played Netball and ended up playing for Lancashire for 10yrs. I miss competitive sport. I also miss my 3 siblings. We are not in touch. I wonder if they are happy now? I miss monopoly and cluedo days with my Bessie mate

Our daughter was a bit young for flapjack, think it creeped her out, a bit dark but very funny and awesome use of different animation. We loved creepy doctor barber and his candy wife
