Thinking of buying one but no idea what to look for ! Can anyone suggest a reasonable one that's not going to cost a fortune

It depends if your going to buy one so that your insurance is cheap. Then don't go for a cheap one. Also get a pro to install it.

We got a cheap one from eBay paid £20 it did the job. Wife was not getting fuckers breaking in front to do fake insurance claim. But trying to get data off that was a nightmare setting to confusing.

Try and go for one that has a removable card. So you can view the video on your computer if you need to later much easy. Will need to get memory card reader (£3 from eBay.

Have a look at nextbase 412gw available from halfords. Can also buy a hard wire kit for it.

I installed a new head unit in my car last year that had a dash cam as part of the set up - rather than a stand alobe unit that leaves you with a cable running accross your dash from the cigar lighter / accessory socket.

Takes a micro SD card, which is great for extracting clips when necessary.

I had a cheap one (£40) and when it was working it was fine, but after a few months started playing up. Now I have £100 garmin and its much more reliable.

A tip - unless you always (and I mean always) drive within speed limit, buy dash cam without a speed recording option, or the one you can disable speed showing on your recordings
