To buy or to rent one??

With these tough financial times what would you do?

Only curious because about 6 friends of mine are all due to tie the knot soon and have ALL bought dresses ranging from £150 up to £2430

Depends how much you want to throw your cash away.

Everyone has ideals about their wedding day so it also depends on the importance of it to the couple.

Personally if I was strapped for cash I wouldn't even be looking for something at £2500 in the first place.

My colleague spent £21,000 on their wedding, had a baby not long after and then cried about how little money they had because the lady stopped work to look after the kid. I did think at the time if they planned to have kids so soon they should have scaled down the wedding and the money they could have saved would have been the same as an average salary.

Renting a dress for a one day event sounds a good idea to me

E-bay! I just bought a £180 ball gown for £35 was only worn once by a bridesmaid. Will do me for the Masquerade ball.

nice one Laine! i made my first ebay purchase the other day and now im looking on there for things all the time.

Ebay is a great idea but not everyone wants a dress second hand even if only worn once because it's their special day.

Personally I think it's a great idea

Your friends should have a look on there, some wedding dresses are cheaper to buy second hand than renting them for a day.

A friend who got married recently and is a bit of a goth, bought a wedding dress off ebay for about £40 had it dyed as she wanted it in black, total cost less than £100

I've paid for two of the fookin things in my life and that's it for me, never again. I'm off the wedding planner's radar and been removed from his mailing list lol

my daughter bought a beautiful £1300 dress for her wedding ...it had ben used on a photo shoot for cosmo bride and was being auctioned on ebay raising money for addenbrookes hospital ....we got it for £180 it was absolutely amazing fitted her perfectly ....no.one knew she hadnt bought it brand new ..

Thats the ultimate question isn't it.

People forget it's supposed to be about being together forever and the importance of that. Know so many people who have gone through the wedding because they had paid a kings ransom for it when they knew deep down it was never going to work.

As above, its about the lifetime together afterwards. yes the day is important; but nowhere near as important on remaining happy together for the rest of your lives. So if saving money by renting or obtaining secondhand means you have the deposit for a house/child savings/etc then go for the cheap option!

Have one made for me.

Have not bought anything formal for yonks as nothing fits, so I have them made for me instead.

Not that I would consider getting married ever again though.
